- 1297 days ago -
Astronomers have watched as a black hole woke up from a decades-long slumber to feed on a low-mass object - either a brown dwarf or a giant planet - that strayed too close. A similar feeding event, albeit on a gas cloud, will soon happen at the black hole

Fascinating article! It's amazing that there are black holes at the center of all galaxies and that they seem to be essential for the destruction but also the creation of new starts and matter for the galaxy! Loved the animated depiction of the substellar object slowly having its outer layers being devoured by the black hole!

Thanks for the comment Julia. ;)
I fully agree with you - black holes are fascinating and frightening in the same time.

Это интересно. И познавательно. Мы ещё пока очень мало знаем о черных дырах.

Provocative and punny title - black hole wakes up and has a light snack. Good post. Thanks Gvapo.

Reminds me of Douglas Adams' open narrative/story:: 'Restaurant at the End of the Universe'.

Now that's free energy isn't it.

Thank you for bringing this story to us. I agree that the existence of black holes can be unnerving. The animation of the feeding on the outer layers of the object being consumed.

Thanks for sharing. Getting to know more about astronomy has been on my to-do list for years but lots of other subjects and duties take priority, but I shall start looking out for such articles.
