For some, the American dream is having a three-car-garage McMansion, a place to raise and spoil your kids, an honest, high-paying job, peace of mind and enough cash to be worry-free into an early retirement. Maybe that's not working out so well for

Amusing and interesting and a bit weird since real hippies are not concerned with getting rich, but with living richly.

Hippies another derogatory term aimed at those seeking freedom in the land of the supposed free. Peace love oh those awful words of the sixties we must eternally condemn them. Flowers dancing in the streets my god what have these people done.

Communal living can also be more like the old TV series "The Golden Girls". I have several retired friends who share a beach house and a city condo. The five share two cars - one for the beach, one for the city. They travel by bus between the two at little cost compared to owning five separate cars. Their one Costco membership stretches their food and personal care budgets without excess items needing a super large storage area or spoiling before being used. Seems they always have someone to split 2 for 1 deals around town. They also chip in their special talents and skills to the group. They have a great setup that works very well for them.

But . . . but . . . but that's socialism, isn't it?

I love it.

Thanks, Joseph. This may become a true movement as more of us find we cannot live in the current "American Dream." The hitch is that they mention having 50K as a stake for land...and not many of us have 50K these days! It would certainly be interesting to go to the conference, but the price is way beyond my reach!

Yes! I have been wondering how to do this myself without having it feel too commun-y. As a society, we have lost touch with one another as we have gotten caught up in the rat race, esp in cities like NYC. I love this. Thank you.

sounds good as long as parents do parenting and not leave the "village " to raise and discipline the kids if they start running amok. Not everyone's "little dear" is endearing.

I always understood the "hippie" values and message though a little ahead of their movement. Actually, we, in a way, had co-ops some 75 years ago as all generations of families lived together and stayed in the same communities with lots of aunts, uncles and cousins. IIt's just been in the last 50 years that this has drastically changed.

Seems a contradiction in terms. True wealth does not depend upon possessions!
