Just witnessing all of this unfold in its beautifully chaotic cacophony, it is undeniable that something incredibly historic is afoot. Not only has the movement gone global in an unprecedented kind of way..

Lovely article, clear overview, and so much more to come isn't it Evelyn? We are still waiting for the global power of the political and economic elites to be dismantled by the 99%

Thank you my friend

I am entirely confused by this
particularly since once again my post vanished-It has a habit of doing this whenever I express a contravesial opinion on Care 2

I said that as far as I can see revolutions in the past have been unsuccessful unless the peasants were led
by the elite and intellectuals(for which read elite)-I instanced the thousands of peasant revolts that have been quashed-and in it I suppose I include that of the levellers-though this may be an instance of the inevitable factional fighting that revolution seems to entail as violence seems to beget violence

Isaid that successful revolutuions like thoset of the French and Russians had elite complicity and depended on violence even Gandi's revolution got it's impetence from violence on the part of the British and the British elitesdesire to occupy the high moral ground

The Indian revolution of course also succeeded because the British needed India to sustain them through man power and wealth during the second world waras they had in the nineteenth century.

The wars of revolution that have plagued the twentieth century remind me rather of the famous Goya painting of two peasants slugging it outin Quicksand as they speed to their death.

Even Mill that champion of freedom was afraid of the vaguaries and selfish narrow interests and violence and stupidity of mobs-and after a few rounds with the superior forces of government that is what any prolonged protest is likely to amount to or so it seems to me.

The sort of peaceful means which consist in less immediately gratifying activity like holding hands and singing "We will overconme" is far fromm likely to achieve results.

Infiltrating churches with the Christian doctrine(the real one of forgiveness and love and one's duty to support one's neighbor );Demonstrating that high moral principles can help ,directly aiding the poor, petitionong ,joining together to belong to boards by buying shares and then suggesting other activities, forming communal bamnks
an co-operative farming and selling enterprises and export and import groups with a moral base
are all more likely in my opinion to bring about a satisfactory millenium

And above all perhaps we could regard the Christian message of not attacking a mote of dust in someone elses eye before we have cleared our own as a mandatory approach to better living for all

Thank you, Evelyn! As more and more students start to demonstrate...after all it really is their future that is being trashed, the more the movement will grow. I add my, Three cheers for OWS!!!

I have to disagree with you, Penelope. Peaceful movements have worked before, ask the people involved in the Civil Rights movement. It was not the movement that used violence, it was the powerful factions that wanted to keep the people down. Even the terrible riots were an outcome of the brutality first used by those powers. As far as the Indian freedom movement and the UK being dependent on India for income, well, the 1%, whether they think so or not, are dependent on the working class for their income...if this movement continues to grow around the world (and I believe it will) they may find themselves losing the slave labor they depend on in other countries, too. And their is an intellectual "elite" involved in OWS, not to mention that many of the protesters (I for one) have Masters degrees and higher.... and are unable to find work that supports them. The wide strata of people in this movement, marching together, gives me great hope that with patience and perseverance we will prevail...and overcome.

@ Bonnie B.: Absolutely right! And let us not forget that Gandhi took "On Civil Disobedience" by H. D. Thoreau.

A little piece of annoying trivia: When I was a youngster (yes, I know...) ....back in my day, every copy of "Walden" had "On Civil Disobedience" included as an appendix. They don't do that anymore........
