No matter what American women and some in other developed countries think about having babies, the vast majority of babies are delivered safely and without medical intervention all over the world. It is far safer for the communities to have well trained mid wives, those who know how to intercede should something need a step beyond, "catching" the baby at delivery. In the US we have cesarean rate of between 42 and 50%, even our own AMA says that it should not be over 5-6%, meaning that most women are very safe in using a mid wife. Our OB's are trained surgeons, not trained mid wives, so much the loss for us.

For Afghan women and women all over the world, including developed countries we should strongly support the proper training of mid-wives. In many ways it is a power step for education for women.

Midwives are great! I support training midwives and hope that every pregnant woman can have a helpful doula or midwife with her.
