Rape Victim Could Have 'Closed Her Legs'

A New Zealand woman raped by a bouncer in an alleyway could have "closed her legs" if she didn't want sex, the man's lawyer told a court.

That bouncer is a serious male chauvinist d--k head! I'd call him a MCP, but that would be a vicious insult towards pigs.

It's hard to believe a defense attorney could make such outlandish statements in 2013. He sounds like he's stuck in the 1950s. I hope the rape survivor gets the justice that she deserves.

Could have closed her legs? I guess the defense attorney thought the jury was as stupid and insensitive as he. The technique of blaming the victim should always back fire, then these attorneys might have to try to make a deal for less prison time. From the stories we see lately it would seem that New Zealand is having a crime wave, much of it centered on rape.

Sick and disgusting! The rapist is to blame , not the victim! The rapist needs to be made gender neutral, along with his lawyer!

Gob smacked and sick to the pit of my stomach, I guess it's real easy to keep your legs closed while a monster is raping you.

A disgusting thing to say. Alone and terrified, and facing a professional bouncer, I'm guessing he was the size of a gorilla, there was very little she could have done...
Poor girl.

You wonder how some of these lawyers sleep at night.

It is pretty hard for a girl to defend herself against a bouncer and try
to keep her legs closed.

George Jason Pule, 34, was last night found guilty of raping
the unnamed woman, 20.

Why not as a defense: She just shouldn't have been born?

Guys like this one give lawyers their bad name, and it make you, as a lawyer, kind of ashamed of your job.

No further comment your honor....

The comments come in the wake of the Roast Busters rape scandal, in which a group of New Zealand teenagers boasted online about having sex with drunk girls as young as 13.

Wellington Rape Crisis manager Natalie Gousmett told StuffNZ she was "outraged" by the lawyer's comments: "It's disgusting, bus also unnecessary, to use that kind of victim-blaming rhetoric."

I'd say NZ has to do a real educational campaign, starting with the Lawyers.

Yes, conviction is good, here; then "gender neutral" putting them both in a castrato singing group would help.

It is sad to say but it is like this everywhere. They say, "Well the victim did not fight back", "They should not have been dressed like that." They wanted it or they would not have been here." Why is everything always blamed on the victim? Good I am glad he was found guilty. POS!!! Noted.

Stories like this make me very mad. I would say that the bouncer should have "kept it in his pants" if he didn't want the negative attention to what he did wrong.

("This is real life."said by Ms. Kelly) "told her he had to get something first and led her to a laneway where he then raped her." If that is real life, where to get into an establishment you need to be violated as a price, then I will never go anywhere again!

I am not surprised. Just close your legs??!! How do you do that when you have a very large man (as a bouncer usually is) between your legs pushing you against the wall? She did the right thing so that although she was raped, he didn't hurt her further which he could have because of his size. This object is not a man, he is a monster and should be treated as such.

By the way, if the defense attorney didn't believe in what he said, close your legs, why is he defending this scum?

It's evil. :(

I wonder what how he would feel if it was his mother, sister, daughter, etc.... that had been raped? There have been instances where nuns have been raped. How do you blame the victim in that scenario?

Where did this lack of compassion, caring, and empathy come from that it has become so commonplace in the Societies of this world? I guess you could surmise that it comes from early childhood brainwashing.

There are so many nasty cartoons, television shows, and magazines, all touting sex. It's disgusting that too much has been seen by the eyes of the youth, and they have not only become tainted from this, they are making victims to add to it. They are desensitized to the pain of others, and escalating at a rapid rate into adulthood, without having learned the basics.

Again I ask, what happened to "The Golden Rule?"
How sad!!!!

Malgorzata Zmuda said, guilty of rape should suffer very severe punishment, the ugly....

I use Google translate. It is close, as long as you keep the words simple, and worth the try.

Seems attorneys will say anything to get their lower-than-scum client off. Fortunately the jury and judge had more sense. I hope the rapist gets his in prison; then he can tell the attorney how easy is is to just "close his legs".

I agree with Jen A, the bouncer should have kept it in his pants in the first place. It isn't part of his job description to solicit sex from women of any age. It's pretty damn hard to close your legs when a large man wedges his knee between them!

bottom feeding lawyer. Bouncers are hired for their imposing bodybuild (not cause they can mix a drink). So given that the defendant was built like Amazing Hulk.....the victim would have had to be Wonder Woman to be able to close her legs. Too bad she wasn't, then she could have lassoed him golden rope and strung him up from the nearest tree.

Yes, Judy C - losing his clientele would certainly be justice served. This lawyer is a disgrace, too bad one can't be disbarred for utter contempt to society and stupidity. His mind is closed like a steel trap and his mouth should remain closed for eternity. He is part of the problem when it comes to protecting the mindset of rape culture.
