Noted, tweeted, shared, tweeted, shared, and voted. We have to educate people; this is not the romance of the frontier. The roads are different, the horses are treated differently, they are not a part of a family, they work too long and in horrible conditions. People have to realize this is not natural behavior for these horses now.

Noted, tweeted, shared, tweeted, shared and voted. There is a need to educate the public that this is not romantic and they are not in frontier times. Roads are different, treatment of horses are different; horses are no longer members of the family, and they are often worked with little food or shelter, and when they get too old; they are beaten and abused.

Voted Yes ... thanks for posting, James, and thanks for forwarding, Constance. If the horse was suffering from an abdominal issue, like the owner said it was, it was probably due to the fact that it didn't have access to enough water or was given cold water to drink too quickly. Both can cause colic. Deadly colic. More laws are needed if they are going to allow this to continue. I hope they don't.

Thank You James!! THERE NEEDS TO BE MANY MORE VOTES IF PEOPLE CAN PASS THIS ALONG>
VERY SIMPLE TO DO.2 SECONDS.... I WILL BE VOTING AGAIN .IT LET ME DO IT TWICE SO FAR.

I can't believe how many are NOT voting that this should be Banned. Selfish and niave people that don't get it ,they don't care and I can only think of negative reasons why they would not want it banned and most end up being selfish people only giving a damn about themselves. They don't even know the real situation and how these horses are treated. Common sense would say horses do not belong doing this.

Thank You James. PLEASE VOTE ,IT TOOK ONE SECOND. I WAS ABLE SO FAR TO VOTE TWICE.>> PLEASE PASS IT ALONG TO ANYONE.IT WAS SUPER QUICK,A SECOND.

I cannot believe how many did NOT vote to ban . Those people are highly selfish and naive people. The only reasons i can think of that people would vote not to ban is mainly all selfish reasons. They like the carriages and they don't know what is done to these poor overworked horses. Common sense would tell a decent person that horses are not here to be held captive and made to work........... others i'm sure are plain jerks and worse.

PASS THIS ON PEOPLE

Noted and voted. Thank you for posting this. It is a "tradition" that's time is past due. If we are to grow and evolve as a race, we need to learn how to better recognize the suffering of others, regardless of what species they are.

Being related to someone who was in the carriage business in the past, and growing up with a love of horses and for the romantic imagery of the carriage ride, I was torn on this issue for years. But after what I have seen,I can honestly say it's no picnic for the animals and unfortunately, it should be stopped. Regardless of how well cared for the horses might be, it's a very hard life for them. Dangerous, hard on the legs, feet, joints etc. If they aren't cared for well, it's much, much worse. It is sad to see them suffer. It is VERY easy (for some owners) when profit is involved, to turn a blind eye to an animal who is becoming ill. They may be inclined to push them too hard, so they don't miss out on those daily sales etc. Tricky business to keep humane and balanced at best, beast of burden nightmare at worst.

Voted YES and shared via twitter and fb.

I was so mad reading the story, but saw why I think people that are ignorant to the plight of carriage horses in general voted NO - the comments by the owner that this was something that "just hapened" and that he is upset and did everything he could.

To that I call BS, and IMHO he should have been charged with animal cruelty for not giving/getting Jerry medical care sooner...

Any horse owner who really knows and cares about horses at all knows Colic has other symptons before the animal resorts to laying down in almost every case.
And what carriage driver wouldn't notice their horse WASN'T POOPING?!
give me a break...

And with those symptoms, all this idiot would have had to do if he was unsure would be to put his ear to Jerry's belly and LISTEN - hearing no sounds would have let him know immediately there was trouble...if the sweating, anxiety, "ancyness", weight shifting and many other possible and usual symptoms somehow escaped him.

Thanks for posting this James, and to Constanci for the forward.

I already voted yes but it has nothing to do with the carriage industry. If the horse had been rested, watered, shaded, worked a shorter day, and less days he would be fine.
It's amazing how "cruel" horse carriages are in 2013 but most of history that was basic transportation. Don't be emotional be practical. If horses don't work they are going directly to the new slaughter plants. Now that's emotional!

Voted yes, ban the horse drawn carriages. That is no life for a horse. They are treated like machinery. They come out of the barn just to pull carriages and they are put back in a stall. No interaction with other horses. No free time at all. It is a miserable existence. The people who drive these carriages don.t make much money and don.t take a personal interest in their horse.

Banning the use of carriage horses will result in the slaughter of thousands of horses who will no longer have a home and a job.

Thanks AniMaeChi.... for all the links. I've signed all of those.

As for the poll I managed to get 9 votes on. It stops me but I seem to be able to go back. LEAVE THE SITE AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES TO GO BACK. SOME TIMES IT LET ME AND OTHER TIMES NOT. TO ME THE 9 VOTES WERE WORTH IT.... Thanks again James for the post!

Now I look at Anna Dayton's post and I don't want that to happen . I would hope that wouldn't happen... BUT THIS IS NOT A HOME AND A JOB FOR A HORSE. They should be able to go some where to simply relax , be pampered a bit and graze.

Thanks for posting this, James. And thanks to all the wonderful, compassionate Care2 members. You rock! I wish we could have more animal sanctuaries for all the animals that should be in one. This horse and others like him could live out their lives there. Instead of contractors putting up more and more office buildings, houses and apartment/condo complexes on every bit of land there is, how about building sanctuaries and veterinary hospitals at the sanctuary sites? There's so much man's inhumanity to the innocent animals in the world. Sanctuaries could put an end to shelters that kill dogs and cats everyday because they have no room for them.

I abhor animal abuse in every kind. Horses should not be slaughtered for food sent to Europe. It is a cruel practice and I have posted videos of it on my public facebook page: I am Looking for Democrats/Environmentalists with a polar bear icon. I have 2 graphic videos of horse slaughter...incredibly cruel, and actually it is difficult to watch. Recently the Govt. in D.C. has once again approved horse slaughter. I will sign any petition to end it. I sign all petitions sent to me from NRDC, BIOGEMS, SIERRA CLUB, etc. which I sign and then paste and post on my public facebook page. I care deeply about all animals and especially polar bears, but all wildlife, all animals, and also do not like Republican obstructionism in Congress which also ignores the illegal helicoptering of chasing wolves in Alaska, and the illegal practice of helicoptering wild mustang horses in another state. Neither States penalize these illegal practices. Katherine Jankay CA 93101

I myself feel that having horses pull carriages has been in effect for centuries and if they are taken care of properly and abide by all regulations they should be able to be used for that reason. We are fighing to stop pollution on our planet to illiminate vehicles and that is what we have as the alternative are our horses. It is very sad that this happened and maybe they should of been more observant toward his care.

Seriously?!?! You have to be kidding me. There are so many multiple entries on this story and the people who took the time to write were clearly focused on their own agenda rather than discussing the issue. Sure it's not ideal to see horses pulling carriages but all those people bleating about a horse doing a job, done for many centuries, are not recognizing the reality that if an animal doesn't have a job as food, a pet or a work animal then it will swiftly become redundant. Better to campaign for better working conditions and keep the industry going than sabotaging it and end the animals use fullness and condemning the animal to death and loosing one of the very few ways we have left to see and bond with horses. We can only learn to appreciate and cherish the animals we can see and touch because otherwise they are only images which can be objectified or vilified as we feel fit to suit our needs

To Kim Loan..the multiple entries were due to a care2 issue..this is not the only page that has multiple posts..people didnt do it on purpose..
we are not idiots and know they wont ban them but if we make enough noise, they will put more safeguards in place so horses wont suffer like they do.. they shouldnt be in the middle of traffic, smelling exhaust and being scared...there are other ways..such as in a park where its quiet for example...too many are overworked, underfed, neglected, ignored with no vet care, no consideration for what they can handle as individuals and then after they work most are stuck in a barn and ignored. Too many are treated as things as a way to make money when they should be running free on their free time. No one wants them to die, esp in those damn slaughterhouses, but they deserve to be treated with respect and care ESP by those who are profiting off of them.
