Murdered for Standing Up to Mugabe

World  (tags: Elections, power, Zimbabwe, terror, humanrights )

When Gibson Nyandoro raised his arm and slowly unclenched his fist to make the open-palmed salute of Zimbabwe's opposition at a rally eight weeks ago, it was a moment so loaded with symbolism that it stilled the crowd.

Why is it when people who want peace and understanding in there Country end up dead? This for sure is heartbreaking for whats happening to people there. This brutel man needs to be taken out, before thousands others are killed or die from starvation. Thanks Michael noted

Well, I had to travel a circuitous route to "find" this story, but it was worth it. Sometimes, I wonder why they call this existence "civilization."

Thanks, Michael, for bringing it to light -- and Stephanie, for alerting me to its existence.

"You can't say civilization isn't advancing: in every war they kill you in a new way." --Will Rogers, writer, actor, comedian.

Somebody might want to post this story also:

South Africa: Who Will Pay for Peacekeeping?

It seems that the South African force has been "constituted, the paperwork has been done, they have pledges from countries," but they are overextended in terms of money, equipment, and manpower. So who will pay for peacekeeping?

There is a Xhosa saying translated into English more or less - that a man given the chance to redeem himself for his errors should be revered. I know what it was like for the farmers he talks of killing but I also am willing to believe in the Xhosa. It took GREAT courage for Gibson Nyandoro to raise his hand. I firmly believe he knew what price he would pay. I hope I live to see his name and all the others that are doing the same thing, even as this is being posted, paying the same price be listed as revered, because he has certainly been redeemed.

Wow! (In Oklahoma?)

I must say that this article truly moved me. I am forever strengthened in my own commitments when I see such examples of extreme inner strength, even in the face of death. I'm sure his "execution" was made even crueler because of his prior affiliations -- and yes, undoubtedly, he knew that would be a certainty as he bravely decided that it would be better to die for his beliefs than to live as a liar and traitor to his people.

Michael, your translated Xhosa saying only made the story even more poignant and forever etched in my mind.

Sad as it all is, this is a testimony to the unconquerable human spirit and righteousness.

Thanks Stephanie I still hope for a UNWF where countries like Zimbabwe's and Mugabe and that idiot in Burma would have the power taken away by a United Nation World Council and removed by the United Nation World Force.

I think that what more of these news submissions need is the "personal touch" we witnessed with Michael's comments. So many of us read these -- and remain removed, seeing them merely as commentary and words -- but, that realistic input brings it all home, and forces us to view it "first person."

Wow!

Mick, I think the UN has one of those little problems where they can't find a country without sin to cast the first stone....

Sadly true, Mark. But (as I'm sure you are already aware) who are the "trusted" UN members?

It's a sorry state of affairs.

It is a pitiful state that this world is in. Countries who signed agreements, which if acknowledged, could end world hunger; governments lie to their constituents because they know they would never agree to the truth; people torture and enslave other humans because they can (but couldn't imagine a life as a victim); animals are relegated to a lesser species, and therefore, their deplorable treatment is ignored.

The situation and philosophy of this world is sick and destined only toward philosophical and physical destruction.

This is all happening while the majority are asleep, and resent any attempt to awaken them.

AND YET, WE MUST CONTINUE!

And this man, in his last moments, as he raised his hand . . . saw the simple truth.

We ARE what we stand for.

Hi Everybody,

First I want to say ... I'M BACK ... we have been on vacation to Key West and St. Augustine. We felt if we were going to pay $4 per gallon, we might as well keep that tax revenue in the State of Florida (and we did pay in excess of $4 per gallon with warnings that it will reach toward the $5 a gallon mark by mid summer). So, I'm trying to catch up on the 97 emails that await me in my inbox.

Now, about this article. The African states have most all been in turmoil at one time or another. You can just about relate it to the Israeli/Palestinian situation. They have been at war with each other or having infighting from time immemorial. Now with the "modern" day elections, we have the same situations there as here, in that nobody wants to give up power.

Power is a sickness ... it is an egomaniacs dream. We have all .. well some of us have wondered why nothing has been done by the 2006 elected Congress to correct the changes in our government, the loss of liberties, and the separation of our society into more haves than have nots.

My prayer is that Bush does not want to colonize Africa, but of course, to my knowledge, there is NOT a substantial amount of oil in Africa, so why waste our men and women in securing peace in on that continent.

They will work out their own difficulties. Eventually there will be massive bloodshed, and like many African leaders before him Mugabe, will be looking for asylum in some country and then a new leader will take over until the power goes to their heads and the process starts all over again.

This is the main reason I ceased contributing to African relief measures. The supplies are being confiscated in many cases by the governments and the food and medicines never get to the people for which they were intended.

Take care and as the saying goes, "There's no place like home!"

Peace to you and to those who love you,
Patrick

But I love africa and I love it people and especially the ones who stand up to oppression...Most will propbably forget this man who spoke out without words but I for one wont...

Patrick, there are several groups about Africa on Care2 and there are several people who live and work there, as Michael W. does, while there are many others who have been there or are associated with various groups in Africa. I stopped donating to large relief groups in the United States when I learned, many years ago, that they were paying their Directors six figure salaries instead of using the money to help those in need. Corruption is everywhere, but that doesn't mean that there aren't good people doing good things everywhere also. Check out some of the smaller on-the-ground NGOs doing relief work in Africa, and I'm sure you'll find some that merit and will make maximum use of your donations.

One of my personal favorites is MADRE but there are many others.

It is, perhaps, the necessary compliment to knowing where our stuff comes from, so as to avoid buying products produced by child or slave labor, to know where our donations go and direct them as efficiently as possible.

The situation is indeed somewhat analogous to the situation in the Middle East, but there are organizations worth donating to there also, and you can find many of them by clicking on "about us" and then looking at the organization list here:

And best of all, Patrick, you can do all your research on the internet without having to spend a dime on gas.
