Save the Grand Canyon

Environment  (tags: environment, habitat, healthconditions, pollution, wildlife, water, nature, protection, conservation, ecosystems, destruction )

- 2868 days ago -
In the last five years, mining companies have expressed the desire to mine on 800 claims within five miles of the Grand Canyon--close enough that the cyanide and other toxic chemicals they use to separate ore from rock could run off into the streams ...

Yet another example of greed -- allowing these mining companies to proceed will reek havoc and destruction and destroy our mother earth further -- not to mention putting lives of all in serious danger with more toxic cocktails in the earth and the water sources. Please help by signing the petition to save the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is not just the most famous canyon in the USA, it is world famous. Isn't it one of the natural Wonders of the World! Mining companies only think of their profits and do not seem to care whaat they destroy in the process.

Words for our time, POWER AND GREED. Seems big business and republican could care less about nature, our enviornment, mother earth. THEY JUST CARE ABOUT MAKING MORE MONEY NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY DESTROY.

This madness has to end, and we have to get this kind of people out of control and office. Big companies can easily bribe (sorry, I should say donate) these politicians (and there are some democrates too). I'm sick of it.

As an inspired environmental activist ~ working with the Greenhouse Neutral Foundation (, and co-Founding with Gregory the Sustainability Education Network ( - our work as citizens of the world is more critically important than ever before.

I'm sorry Jeanne that you were unable to sign the petition. I am that relatively rare creature, a native of Arizona; though I no longer live there full-time, the Canyon is infinitely precious to me and to most Americans who aren't actively involved in selling it off in fragments to be mined and exploited until nothing that is unique remains...except the money the corporations reap. That mineral mining and other exploitatiosn should even be under discussion now, as the tragedy in the Gulf is doing irrevocable harm that will endure for generations is obscene. I will reiterate what I have said for the past two years: Ken Salazar was the wrong choice for Secretary, and every Bush/Cheny crony left at Interior needs to go back to the corporate world where, at a minimum, we can recognize them as the adversary.

Teresa B (0)

I wonder what those greedy bastards will do when the earth begins to implode or spiral into the sun. My guess is suicide like you hear so much of when stock markets crash or someone if found out in a scam. Some people seem to have no soul or are so shut off by their greed. What will it really take to wake people up to what we are doing to the earth. We all need to take responsibility though. We consumers allow this to happen. If we all said no way, we won't drive or keep our house nice in cozy in winter and cool in the summer, this all could not happen or to the degree it does.

Signing petitions are great, but really what are we doing personally. Hard questions sometimes and a lot of soul searching.

TY Jenny. I agree 100%. It is obscene. "W" ,"Dick" and Co. errrr~ Regarading the Gulf, for everyone pointing fingers, "Dick" is a good place to start. Teresa~ I chose to make what I assume you are refering to as "sacrafices" many years ago. It is MY way of life. It is a choice, and I am proud to say I made the choice many, many years ago. I agree for many it requires much soul searching. I guess I am very Blessed, as it is the only way I can live...with my SELF. Great posts ladies.

Wednesday June 16, 2010, 1:38 pm
Jenny S., Teresa E., that's what really raised my hackles first thing this morning was seeing that the greedy (bastages as I like to refer to them lol) keep trying to rape and endanger life just to line their own pockets. Well... I think it's fair to say that we've all had it UP TO HERE and THEN some!!

I've always loved nature and had the respect instilled in me of caring for the earth that gives us our life since I was a child - though sad to say I was caught in the "rat race" and though I still treasured the tranquility and peace of being one with nature, I found myself being a consumer of convenience -- until I had an epiphany one day when I was out sailing and became mad as hell. I've written about that experience in a blog called Letters from 2030 - look for Suzanne's Epiphany entry if you're interested in reading it. The Letters series is a good read... at lease I think so lol (

Rev. Joseph, thank you and everyone for continued shares - I hope this post will stay visible at least for a day or two so that we can help the petition get more signatures! It's on my fb also and I think a few have seen it there as well already.

Jules P. - wow! I'm in awe of imagining how beautiful that must have been to marry on the rim! I think I was always destined to end up in AZ... it's beauty has enamored me since I was a child. I do love it here - from my first day arriving I knew I was "home" in Arizona.

SuSanne... you had an epiphany too! There must be something in our names... lol

Terry G you are so right! It's their greed making them desperate - they "think" they have the rights.... they don't!!! They have no right to dredge into the womb of the Mother Earth who nurtures and feeds and cares for us. There is more than enough already in circulation around the world, there is no just cause warranting further destruction and depletion. Their greed is NOT just - it's just greed.

Keep signing everybody!! Yeah! :)

Petition signed, story noted. I also joined the grassroots movement to stop this mining. We are besieged with GREED! What will they do when all natural resources are gone? All animals are extinct? I am so sick of the greed in this country. Have you ever asked much is enough? People with outlandish profits on their mind should have to face CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY of which I am a member. God help us if we don't get a handle on this outrage.

Thanks Suzanne and congrats.

The Grand Canyon is a sacred place. The emerging point. I have been many times. The first time I saw her, all of the burdens I was carrying fell from my shoulders and tears streamed down my face. I breathed in her sacredness. I heard the ancients chanting. I have "fire in the belly" for protecting her. Whenever do "we the people" get a say? Of course I signed the petition. Lovingly to all who responded. Thanks.

Would like to sign as sadly, i can no longer argue that mining companies and oil companies or authorities can be trusted even in an advanced jurisdiction can be trusted to extract minerals etc which we may need, for the benefit of the people, ensuring that NO damage results from such activity - which can and should be applied. All that seems to happen (well in too many cases at least) is that these corporations cannot help themselves to every last dollar that can be squeezed from it, influencing the law makers and the law keepers to let them do so, putting anything and everything at risk ..... yet IF the people were in control (why aren't they?) such would be avoided or the project abandoned!

In the mean time, we tear down the Amazon to replace trees with crops to feed the meat factories and do just as much to destroy our (long term) ability to enjoy nature - like the Amazon, like the Grand Canyon - which by the way, literally took my breath away like nothing before or since! Good Luck with this

As the government does not own any part of this country, it has no right to allow any company to infringe on any national park. The people of this country own everything and the government needs to understand this.
The government is just a steward who jobs is to protect the lands, animals, waters, people and environment of this country.

Signed and noted and I hope you get so many signatures that Salazar has to take action to stop the mining nr the Grand Canyon as it's a great shame if that's going to be lost together with the wildlife that's there and in the river coming down from it!

People can't keep anything alone, as here they want to start drilling for Gas on Aboriginal Land and the WA Premier said if the Aboriginals don't agree with it he's going to take the land of them! How's that for greediness. As you can see it's not only in the USA but all over the world and it has to stop. The governments can't just keep on taking land from the Wildlife or the Natives!!!!!

You know, years ago when these areas were designated 'national treasures' or parks, it was because we wanted them to remain untouched, beautiful, appreciated as is and preserved for the future generations. What happened to that mindset? Is there no place left on Earth that is sacred, that someone, somewhere had to rape and make a buck off of it?

Suzanne S (760)

Exactly Carol H. - greed has raised it's ugly head once again and threatens this sacred treasure.

...and yes Tekla, it is crazy - crazy stupid to put at risk of one of the most beautiful places on earth.

"Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it." Teddy Roosevelt made this quote at the Grand Canyon, Arizona on May 6, 1903. He was commenting on how people should treat the Grand Canyon.

Enough is enough! We must stop pillaging the earth! Just because the ore is there, is not a sufficient reason to mine it!. Recycle more and leave the earth alone!

There are just some things our government should do on its own, without us having to write to them or sign petitions, or hope for the best; some things should never be up for discussion at all. This is one of those things. Done with great hope and great disappointment.

I just can't believe how such a sacred place, famous worldwide, voted amonsgt the 7th Natural Wonders, visited by millions of tourists from all countries (many coming to the US of A JUST TO SEE THE GRAND CANYON!!) could be threatened by some greedy corps.
The 21st century is ALREADY TEN YEARS OLD, every single citizen, even in the deepest jungles, knows about all the threats we are imposing on our planet.
And while those people who live in the jungles and other "uncivilised" areas have been trying to warnn us for many decades, the final destiny of our Home, there's still a small minority of corporations and governments which hold most of the power, and which don't care a bit about THEIR OWN CHILDREN's future, as long as the shares of their companies keep a stable upwards progression.
Dear God, if you exist, please help us pitiful humans, always very proud of our "ability to control" our world : thus we might have "B plans", we have no "B planet" in case the A one becomes too damaged to be salvages.

Couldn't sign petition as I live in Mexico. It's Arizona. What else would they do?

These mining companies have no social ethics or environment morals
Its the same thing with the mining up in the artic circle, the trash they leave behind when a mine closes down is unthinkable ig: bulldozers and all sorts of heavy equipment that are left to rust.

In the toundra if you step on one single wild flower it cant take up to 50 years for it to grow and bloom again !

p.s. couldnt signed I guess Canada is not a part of north america shhhhhhhhhh

Mining companies should be disbarred and sent to Myanmar. Maybe they can mine there to their hearts content!
Of course everything should be done to save the Grqand Canyon from mining even one displaced rock!

To the Canadian, whose comment was not accepted?
MMine comes from S.Africa and seems to be OK!

Signed and noted. My G_d, what won't the mining, oil, gas and logging companies do for a buck. The Gulf is for all intents and purposes a 'dead zone'. Now they want to pollute the Grand Canyon. I'm surprised they haven't used it as a land fill for all our garbage and then built condos on it. Give me a break.
