I ask you all to please spread this far and wide - our petitions still need your help - we need to build more signatures - we could then submit these petitions to show at these public meetings and hearings how the worldwide citizens are concerned and want to see all uranium mining come to a fast and screeching halt!! Currently we have 833 of 1000 signatures needed on the Change.org Petition ... so close!!!

Currently the Care2 petition has only 555 of 5000.... with 14+ Millions members.... I'm saddened at such a low number of signatures ~ please C2 members ~ we need more to help from everyone to fill this petition now more than ever.

Please help save the Grand Canyon from uranium mining....

I wish we could find a way to rid ourselves permanently of the greed that wants to permeate every living thing on our planet. They can just leave our National Parks alone. We will have to fight every inch of the way to save our planet and our country and our precious parks. These are National Parks, that means that they are owned by all of us.

No Way ! ! !

The Canadian-Korean co-op must not be permitted to begin work on the "EZ mine". It is within the watershed of the Colorodo River that drains into the Grand Canyon and is in the Grand Canyon Groundwater Protection Area.

After reading this (thanks Susanne S.) I looked around, found, and signed a petition to Ken Salizar (U.S. Sec. Int.) demanding no additional Uranium Mining in the vicinity of the Grand Canyon.

The site is:

http://environment.change.org/petitions/view/worldwide_campaign_to_save_the_grand_canyon

Please cut and paste it and go to the sire and sign the petition. Then stay alert for any other news.

Someone asked why these idiots are in a position of power... simple... people voted them in office!. For one reason or another people have decided it's better to destroy what world we have left rather than do things to protect it. The love of the almighty dollar for the rich, dirt for the rest of us, but some people are so ignorant they can't see it.

The half-life of uranium 238 is about 4.47 billion years... I don't think the threat ever went away or is likely to. Cleaning up the uranium tailings from old mining operations should be the responsibility of the mining company. But that won't ever happen... it'll just be one more mess left behind by big business that the taxpayers will get stuck with.

This mining near the Colorado River must be stopped as it impacts the environment. This reminds me of the licensing of a nuclear waste dump near the Colorado River by California Governor Gray Davis, and the subsequent Native American occupation of the area for hundreds of days until the nuclear waste dump proposal was finally federally trashed by the Clinton Government.

Tribal people have been forced to haul water from Uranium pits, as the cities, agriculture, etc take their water away...the atrocities are ongoing, cancer rates, birth defects...hard labor to find water. If no one will yet clean up the radiation left behind decades ago, who will oversee the clean up and prevent the seepage into the river and water table, also fill up pits dug from earth? No pays attention to Native peoples, their land and water rights! Their health issues are brought on by invasive theft and introduction of hazardous materials, alcoho, flour, sugar.

This is terrible. And it's all part of our change from a republic to one run by rich corportions and well connected. We are being taken over by these groups of greedy and power hungery politicians (mostly republicans) and large international corporations. I don't have an answer, unless we the people (the 98% of US) can organize and do something. I'm watching our country fall apart.

The following words of George Carlin is as
applicalbe to these $$$$$$ hungry bastards as not:

Every sixty seconds, thirty acres
of rain forest are destroyed in order
to raise beef for fast food restaurants that
sell it to people, giving them strokes and
heart attacks, which raise medical costs and
insurance rates, providing insurance companies
with more money to invest in large corporations
that branch out further into the Third World
so they can destroy more rain forests."
-George Carlin, comedian

When all is gone what will the rich & gluttonous
pigs do then?
Who will dig for the diamonds, dig ditches for water,
strip trees for fruit or even paint their walls & make
their cushy bed?

Plant & protect Danny's trees for life.......
Trees are the lungs of the earth................

Listen up everyone......
.Read these quoted lines from the movie Grand Cayon.......
Absolutely marvelous:

Simon: You ever been to the Grand Canyon? Its pretty, but thats not
the thing of it. You can sit on the edge of that big ol thing and
those rocks... the cliffs and rocks are so old... it took so long
for that thing to get like that... and it aint done either! It
happens right there while your watching it. Its happening right now
as we are sitting here in this ugly town. When you sit on the edge
of that thing, you realize what a joke we people really are... what
big heads we have thinking that what we do is gonna matter all that
much... thinking that our time here means didly to those rocks.
Just a split second we have been here, the whole lot of us. Thats
a piece of time so small to even get a name. Those rocks are
laughing at me right now, me and my worries... Yeah, its real
humorous, that Grand Canyon. Its laughing at me right now. You know
what I felt like? I felt like a gnat that lands on the ass of a cow
chewing his cud on the side of the road that you drive by doing 70
mph.

Plant & protect Danny's Trees for life.

We can not allow any more messing around the uranium at the Grand Canyon.Water supplies and land have already been poisoned by radiation from uranium mining run-off. Human, animal and plant lives and species have been lost and continue to be endangered by the toxic contaminations. We must stop this mining now

They are ALREADY there! Denison Mines of Canada has been mining for Uranium for YEARS, poisioning water and putting the toxic waste on and near Inians Reservations cover with a thin layer of dirt!

McCain and Brewer ought to be ashamed of themselves- secretly selling AMERICAN RESOURCES for their own private wealth while screaming like magicians for the entire country to "look at the Mexican border"!!! theives

I don't understand why some people feel the need to destroy this beautiful land that we live in! And by creating more contaminants to leach into the ground water/aquifers, it'll simply ruin something that has been changing and evolving long before any of us were even thought of.

There is NO NEED to mine U235 & 6. What would it be used for BOMBS! It surely would not be used in any Nuclear power plant. I was a Nuclear Quality Control Inspector during the first generation nukes. I live in Hawaii where there is NO commercial power plant. They are DANGEROUS!!!!! Even with the federal loan assurance put in place by OBAMA, no one wants to build them again. The environmental damage costs, construction cost over runs, there will be, the cheaper green power that is coming, all combine to make NUKES A VERY BAD IDEA!!!. AGAIN, there is NO GOOD REASON TO MINE Uranium.

This is the ultimate in human greed and irresponsibility.

If that needle-nosed twit, Salazar, has the final say, we are doomed!

There should be no more mining of anything, anywhere. Surely, we have extracted enough resources from the Earth to recycle and re-use for the next thousand years; otherwise, we are just going to implode.

I'd already signed both these petitions sometime in last September, I can't believe there's not thousands more signatures! The Grand Canyon is one of those ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE places on Earth which should always remain untouched for all our children, grandchildren, and grandchildren of their grandchildren, I'm so appalled to know that some people would be greedy enough to threaten some destruction there. These people should be reminded that tourists are coming from ALL OVER THE WORLD IN THE SOLE PURPOSE OF COMING TO THE GRAND CANYON, FOR SOME IT IS "THE TRIP OF THEIR LIFE".
In my mind, the Grand Canyon is Nature's equivalent in beauty to Mankind's built Taj Mahal. I'm positively sure the Indian government would not allow the Taj Mahal site to be threatened even if they found oil or uranium beneath Mumtaz Mahal and Shâh Jahân's final resting place - would they?

Development should be tempered with concern for the environment and indigenous tribes. The Grand Canyon has been there since time immemorial!

Hartson D. you say-
"It surely would not be used in any Nuclear power plant. I was a Nuclear Quality Control Inspector during the first generation nukes"

http://www.nei.org/howitworks/nuclearpowerplantfuel/

A common use of uranium is for nuclear energy. It actually accounts for about 19% of the electricity used in the United States. A type of uranium called U-235 is used in a process called fission. During this process, neutrons slam into uranium atoms which break them down into smaller particles and more neutron particles. The neutron particles continue to interact with the uranium atoms repeatedly, causing a chain reaction where radiation and heat are created. This leads to energy production. In addition to nuclear energy, uranium is also used to produce nuclear weapons.

I don't quite understand.... Why would they choose THAT location. I mean, it is far too precious an area to risk harming in any way...... How do people come to these decisions? Don't they think about the importance of what they are doing to the environment at all? or is it purely about money?... AS USUAL!

"We, and the other life we share this earth with, are already suffering the effects of our careless disregard for our environment. To compound this by further degrading one of our nations remaining unique natural treasures is, frankly, stupid as well as tragic." #588

Signed one, and already had signed the other. Anyone wanting to exploit and defile the Grand Canyon is truly deranged. Thanks, Suzanne.

Look in the Los Angeles Times archive for a series on uranium mining and the health effects among the Dine, or navajo people.

Check hydrology findings of minig's measured effects on groundwater in AZ.

If you can, attend one of the Flagstaff or the Fredonia listed hearings. Such hearings are valuable places to see evidence of what actually occurs in environmentally devfastated places.

Best, prepare yourself with as much information as you can, and SPEAK at the hearings you can attend.

If not, or also, compose and send a commetn during the legal period of comment.

Those are the most valuable things you can do.

When the Center for Biological Diversity finds it useful for public petition, they will likely make one. They reach a lot of activists ofverious types.

Never dilute your own value or care by just speaking once, and believing that it was effective.

I note a "goodie . . . at least they are asking for comments..."
They are required by law to ask for and consider comments. They now divide true personal comments from those put out by environmental groups. They may do so by looking at the text.
Be sure to write in your own words.

I post this comment because during the Bush administration there was a huge assault on the public comment process by those. Expect there to be continuing assaults on public voice and opinion by the elected, especially as it is largely Republican policy to do so now.

Should the assault be exposed, please do your best to act against it and those associated with the denial of the right to speak against proposed actions by government or corporate lessees.

Was that last sentence clear? It might be the most miportant action you take, to preserve the right to effective action against environmental or other wrongs.

Great and useful comment there from Michael M., thanks! And thx again Suzanne, I had of course signed both in summer. Will facebook the links once again now and hope the petitions keep picking up on signs. as they slowly have already. You may have to get the Arizonans together to riot and protest like our people here do when the yearly transport of nuke waste passes through from France to Germany. We, too have a history of many irreversible illnesses of mine workers at the former uranium mine sites in East Germany, that however was kept secret by the then GDR officials.
