Whether it's their fight to destroy pensions or their support of ending Social Security and Medicare as we know it, ALEC has fought for years to put their profits before your retirement.

ALEC is engaging in class warfare, working to take the last vestiges of any of the gains of the New Deal, or the extremely hard won labor battles of the last 150 years...which have cost many lives.
For a fast reading, and very thorough history of this , see "A People's History of the United States," by Howard Zinn.

February 27, 2014 letter to me from MN state Representative Mary Sawatzky:

"Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the influence wielded on state legislators by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). I appreciate your input and share your concerns.

"ALEC, which is composed of corporations and state legislators, promotes an ultra-conservative agenda through "model" legislation that is then replicated on a stat-by-state basis. ALEC bills itself as a state legislative "think tank," with the thinking centered on principles that benefit corporations and strip away the rights of individuals.

"ALEC has supported anti-environmental actions; voter suppression measures; and efforts to financially benefit corporations and very wealthy Americans at the expense of middle and fixed income taxpayers. You can count on my opposition to any ALEC-sponsored legislation that is harmful to Minnesotans."

Rep Sawatzky answers many of the petitions I sign that are sent to her, and I adore her for it...only wish more legislators would let us know what is going on.

Noted. I looked back to see how many times I've written my NC legislators about ALEC this year and could come up with 5 times. I only ever hear back from one of them though. He is a democrat and the other one is a nutbag. I'm just fortunate that in the state of NC, I still have one legislator that, in my opinion, votes properly. Most of his letters to me are along these lines:

"Thank you very much for your email regarding ALEC. I share your concern about this organization and assure you that its values are not in line with mine. ALEC has been the source of much of the bad legislation that the Republican General Assembly has passed in North Carolina and I have fought it at every turn. I feel that our citizens do deserve the retirement benefits for which they worked so hard.

I appreciate you taking the time to contact me and please continue to share your thoughts with me.

Grier Martin"

I have written them about retirement, income inequality, ALEC's corporate profit agenda, education, and the environment.
