Captive animals in Romania's 35 or more zoos are destined to be killed as the country's deplorable zoos do not meet EU standards. Please visit site and sign my petition targeting the EU.

Zoo's are a victorian freak show and do not belong in the 21st century. Only animals in danger of death should be taken from the wild and then kept as close to their natural home as possible.

I agree completely, Alf! This has kept me up at nights... I can only imagine how many animals they are going to kill from 35+ zoos. After living wretched lives...some are going already killed while other zoos like in Buhusi are scheduled starting October!!

Everyone, please this is urgent...we don't have much time! Please 'visit site' and watch the video (it is not graphic) and sign the petition. It has been reported that the EU President is for helping the animals. He just needs the support o fthe rest of the parliament.

While you're at it, please sign my friend's Sinziana's petition as well-- hers targets the President of Romania:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/save-romanias-zoo-animals

Please forward to everyone within and outside of care2. These animals do not have any time to waste. Most of the zoos are already closed. These poor animals will be killed by October, if they don't starve to death first!

It's a shame to kill these beautiful animals. The zoos should be "upgraded" instead!

Everyone please....the 'visit site' link is a petition + video. PLEASE SIGN IT!!

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/save-romanian-zoo-animals

So far, 7 people noted this story and only 2 signatures on the petition. Unless there's something wrong with C2's petition site again? If so, PLEASE GO BACK AFTER SIGNING TO MAKE SURE IT TOOK YOUR SIGNATURE!! These animals don't have much time. They need all the help they can get, and every voice to speak for them.

Many thanks! XO

PETITION LETTER (What you are signing):

We the undersigned urge the European Parliament to help the zoo animals in Romania.

While we applaud the EU for having proper animal welfare guidelines, our plea is to give mercy and compassion to the animals that are now facing slaughter due to Romania's deplorable zoo conditions that are unable to meet EU's standards. Surely for a wealthy union of (supposedly) civilized nations, funds can be allocated to rescue these poor animals.

This is no longer a problem for Romania alone. When you allowed her to become a member of the European Union without stipulations, Romania's problems become the EU's duty to fix as well. From her animal welfare standards (or lack thereof) to her horrific orphanages, the union must do everything in its power to help save the lives of the innocent and helpless victims of Romania.

We only hope that in the future, candidate countries for EU membership will have to meet standards setforth by the union PRIOR to being accepted. Countries like Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina have no regard for animal welfare. They also have decrepit zoos and conduct state-run-massacres of strays instead of implementing TNR (trap/neuter/release) and other humane programs. There must be stipulations prior to EU acceptance to break this vicious cycle of further victimizing the helpless victims.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." -Mahatma Ghandi.

We only speak for those poor creatures who can not. These animals did nothing wrong but to be born. They have been subjected to abuse and neglect all their lives. They deserve to thrive and live in peace; not punished for the cruelty and ignorance of their captors. PLEASE HELP THEM!!!

Sincerely, on behalf of the animals,
The undersigned

I agree that "Romania's problems become the EU's duty to fix as well" as if they, the 'EU', point out something that is unacceptable they should account 'for how it is to be corrected'.

Consider that this also applies to humanity itself. The EU can say 'Fix it' and a country could, but how to fix it is another story.

Once again, the magnificant creatures of the Earth suffer for the inhumanity of men. Murdering these innocents is inexcusable.

A hard concrete floor in a cage is no place for an animal that should be living in the wild under a bright sun on a plain filled with grass & shade trees, while waiting for the cool of the evening to hunt something for dinner. I suppose these animals can not be returned to their natural habitat but they should sure as heck have a better place to live than the cages in this zoo. Find them a better place to live out their lives or at the very least fix the problems, there's no excuse for crap like this !! Animals have feelings just like we do and I'll bet THESE animals are very sad and lonely.
Sincerely, Cal...

Thank you Nadia. Noted and forwarded. My comment on the petition: So...if a Zoo closes, do we just kill all of the beautiful animals? Return them to their home or give them to other Zoo's. Standards are supposed to "improve" the conditions of animals, NOT slaughter them.
I find it totally absurd and counterproductive to on one hand install regulations to hold humane standards and on the other hand kill all the animals if those standards are not kept. Has someone lost a screw? Hold Romania accountable for higher standards and help them financially if needed, AND, that goes for their disabled children as well. Help the funding and offer them education, OR remove the animals from their Zoo's and the Disabled children from their institutions and place them in the countries who DO care about life. Simply killing all the animals is no different than killing all the disabled children ..in my book. What choices are being offered....neglect or death?

Zoos have always made me sad. Even as a kid I always felt uncomfortable and didn't at the the time understand why. I don't like to see beautiful creatures caged. However , they are just going to KILL them because their no longer needed ? Sheesh!

Thanks everyone!! Please cross-post the petitions...especially our European friends, please forward to everyone you know. If you're on MySpace, please post it there. I don't have an account. I should really but...*shrug*

So far, we're at 207 signatures since I published it this morning. My goal of 5,000 is pretty ambitious for such a short deadline; however, for the EU, anything less just won't do , So pretty please cross-post and forward.

If you want to help further, and/or want updates, please join our group: Animal Friends of the Balkans:
http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/afb

It's an open group; no invite necessary although I'm inviting you all now :-) We have to keep harping on the EU re Romania's zoo animals and make sure this doesn't happen again in another future EU candidate country like Serbia or Kosovo that are desperate to get in. They need to get their act together PRIOR to membership or they will never stop their horrific cruelty to animals ini their country.

Thanks for signing, and thanks for caring!! XO

Can I also take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy Birthday..in advance..Sorry I wanted to be the first one to wish you so I couldnt wait...lol ..Keep Smiling !!

I agree animals should only be in zoos for their own protection but the fact remains there are so many in operation around the world & their closure would put the animals in danger. the safety of the animals is paramount

Since signing the peititon a few minutes ago, I have rethought what I wrote there, I do believe all old zoos should be closed, however, we should consider where will the animals go when the zoos are closed...that is one concern. I do think that no more old type zoos should be constructed and old zoos should be turned into wildlife parks without cages. The animals in the zoos in Romania should be saved -this is the problem with this kinds of zoos-they are not animal-centered, but people-centered made to make a profit and when they no longer do, it is the animals that suffer. Why can't other countries offer to take these animals and rescue them from certain death. Noted.

Surely there has to be a better solution than killing these poor animals who have already been through so much. With Romania now a part of the EU,there is a moral responsibility to help, and the EU does not have the justification of poverty as an excuse to do nothing.
