A man drilled several holes in a pit bull's head as punishment for biting his son. The dog was later euthanized. When police got to the house, it was filthy; found another dog, a 4month-old puppy. Both dogs were malnourished, unvaccinated and not licensed

That man is a sick piece of trash. He shouldn't even be allowed to be around a child with that kind of rage in him. Who on earth would do such a thing? Only a very dangerous individual would think of punishing a living thing with a power drill. Sickening.

Have signed and crossposted as well. This story, like many others sadden me to the core....we as a community fight every day to save animals, children, human rights...whatever your cause may be. And then I get this in my email...and I wonder, where did our hearts go? the compassion for one another...I love my animals and cannot fathom someone doing this. It hurts my heart to know that no matter what we do, people like this still exist...hurting animals. When will it end?????????

There is absolutely no need for anyone to ever endanger or hurt an animal! This is horrific; the pain the animal had to endure. This person has to receive the MAX for their cruelty and never be allowed to have or be near animals again. Some people have no feelings toward another living body who has feelings.

People like this belong in an institution becasue this is abuse, cruelty, just plain sick. I know we don't have the law of "an eye for an eye", but it sure would be tempting. I hope this man gets more than just a fine, he needs to be put away.

firstly, i know some animals are not bred well, however did the boy do something to the dog?? secondly who bred this sick, deranged person. My only worry is he had the chance to breed. If the dog was so dangerous why have it around a child, DUHH!
what breaks my heart is this poor trusting dog let this sick sick man drill holes in him. If he didn't want the dog in the home take it to the shelter, and let the animal have some peace and dignity.
society is really heading to hell in a hand basket when people think this is acceptable behavior.

noted, signed and commented. This is one of those cases where you think that the difference between a rational being and an irrational being shouln't be the fact that one belongs to the human race.
I mean, I don't know what's happening to people, locking dogs down in basements. Everyone knows that drives them a bit on the "nervous" side, but what the hll can possess a man to get a dog and torture him like this? And did you notice that, although the man dilled his skull several times, he didn't fight back? What does this mean? He was already abused as a rule, and knew that fighting back would make things worst?
This guy definitly needs treatment!

UNFREAKING BELIEVABLE He's sorry? Yeah he is one of the sorriest human beings I've ever heard of ! What's he going to do when his son is a Teen and talks back to him as most teens will do at least once during those "wonderful" years? Put his head through a wall? Break the kid's arm? This lousy excuse for taking up air needs everything they can give him . Anger management classes, Financial compensation paid out (maybe to a rescue/no kill shelter) Jail time and then community service when he gets out! What an example to his son! And to piss me off more...the dogs were being abused through lack of proper care to begin with...What a total prick!

Why, when you want to adopt a child you have to pass a lot of tests and when you want to have your own child, nothing is required? Or for the adoption of a pet, also nothing at all? So if you have kids or pets, you are allowed to do to them what you please??Anyway, both brothers should be punished. Why? Because the owner (Enrique) did such a "great job" taking care of Baby, that he was kept in the basement!!! In Baby's place I'd bite too the kid playing with my owner, by jealousy...Not to mention the "good job" Severino did by drilling holes in Baby's head. Angry, sadistic people shouldn't be allowed to have kids or pets!!!! If you'll ask me, I'd forbid their very existence.

I am amazed at how easily some are able to mistreat those who are least able to protect themselves-- This guy does a disservice to the concept of compassion and humanity. Jail is not enough and too much at the same time; therefore, suggests that we give him the death penalty and end his misery-- Clearly, all living beings mean nothing to him which leads me to believe he wants death.

Noted and will sign. It seems to me that the acts of violence that mankind is committing against each other and other animals is becoming worse each day. The atrocities committed by the Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq for instance were as gruesome and inhuman as the torture inflicted on this dog by this "man". Animals left to slowly starve to death alone, and in filth. Dog fighting, cock fighting, canned hunts. Canned hunts, for Heaven's sake! Rich bastards who require dead animal parts to prove their manhood? What kind of "men" are they!? They don't have the guts to face the animal on equal footing. Then we have women being stoned for allowing themselves to be raped. Is this civilized behavior? I think civilization is regressing. I think that despite all the achievements we've accomplished since the dawn of time, humanity is deteriorating back upon itself to a prehistoric age occupied by beings who may be further advanced technologically than cavemen, but will have no morals or ethics. Eventually, mankind will devolve to the slime that oozed out of the swamp pit millions of years ago. Oh, wait....

WOW! What is wrong with people? What makes people so sick that they would even consider doing such a horrid thing to another living thing. And how sick must a person be to actually do something like this, of course they were sick even to consider harming such a precious animal. I hope that the guy who caused all this suffering gets the maximum punishment.

Crystal Wade (2)

In response to Elaine's comment about cavemen: I agree that mankind is regressing. I personally believe that they are regressing to a point that even cavemen couldn't attest to. Instead of harming and killing for survival, people of today's world do it simply for pleasure.

As a person with a child, I can understand a person's instinct to protect their child from anything, pet or otherwise, but this goes above and beyond protection. Not only is this man drilling holes in an animals head, he's also setting up the very things that cause an animal to not be in control of his emotions. Aside from the damage this has obviously inflicted upon the dogs, living in filth is equally as bad for the child in question. This man not only deserves punishment for hurting the animal, but for putting his children in danger as well.

these people that made this movie are the same Dorthy Keeler and Leo that have been followed and observed by Denali Nat'l park rangers for about five years now. WHY?, baiting wolves for pictures, the adjustment for photographers and others, as far how close one can be to wolves was THE tipping point for the Park adminastrators, not just the behavior changes with these wolves. Photographers would most likely not have such restrictive measures if it had'nt been for their "gutter ethics" in our wonderful Denali National Park. Keep this in mind when you watch their movie, and if you are knowledgable and informed you will you will see the propaganda pieces and statistics.... This reminds me of Dorothys ranting and raving at last years BOG meeting. And if you curious enough, its a matter of public record. Check it out!!

I am so angry and horrified signing all the petitions I have on abusers of animals. And I mean not just abuse but TORTURE! This is a sick world we live in and I am so thankful that there are still alot of people out there that love, and care, and do what they can to make this a better world. But as for people like this Cruz guy. He should have time to think about what he did. IN JAIL!

I am in total agreement with all on this issue. It is sickening, to read about such a horrific act of cruelty, to another living creature.
This is just MY opinion.
IF, people would put as much time into caring about what is happening to human beings, as they do, on caring about animals, This Earth would be a much more humane place to live for all !
JUST MY OPINION !
I love all living creatures on this planet.
I just care about my human brothers and sisters, a bit more than my animal, brothers and sisters.
Crazy EH !!

Again, this is just MY opinion.
While going through the news articles for the past week, it has been very clear, that ANY article on cruelty to animals, gets massive notes and comments, and usually front page recognition.
Its also very obvious,(fact), that articles on, cruelty to humans, (torture, murder, rape, inscest, nukes, Human species extermination, E.T.C.),
get virtually un-noticed.
Example, dog hole in head, 369 notes, 119 comments.
Example, Chemtrails over America, 18 note, no comments.
The dangers of the chem-trials, to the human, and animal kingdom, will have much more of an effect on our future( and especillay our childrens future), than a dog getting his head drilled by some sicko, and I do consider what this sick person had done, as just that, sick in the head.
I think that my priorities might be a bit different than a lot of people.
Like,, the sick person that shot and killed john Lennon, is alive, and a free man, ( i disagree)
and this sicko(driller) should be hung( I agree).
Again, I love all living creatures.
I just care more about humans.

Animals have no voice I agree, but if you look around the world, there are a lot of voiceless people, who are getting treated as bad as the dog.
thay is all I'm trying to say.
there are still people in FEMA camps in the USA, with less rights than the dog.
I love animals!

I guess I proved my point, people care more about their pets, than their fellow human beings.
I love all living things. No one seems to care about the fact that American soldiers, are coming home and dying from the depeleted uranium bush is using.
Animals have no voice, people do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So if these soldiers, use THEIR VOICE, and say, I don't want to die from exposure to depleted uranium,
bush will stop using it.
Is that the voice that people have, that you are talking about.
.....just an example.

Good idea brought up by John Hickman, above. Use animal abusers in lab testing of perfumes, cosmetics, etc., instead of non-human animals. The test results would certainly be more conclusive.

In response to Scott S., I can't agree with a blanket statement that people care more about their pets than they do about human beings. I think everyone, especially here on care2 loves all living things - including people, pets, wildlife, plants, and insects. Different people focus their concerns on different issues. I have seen many focus groups here regarding domestic abuse and child abuse. Did you include articles on the environment, pollution, global warming, destruction of coral reefs, wetlands, and rainforests in your comparison test? Those issues ultimately come down to the effect on human beings. What delineating factors did you use in your test, and how many news posts were included?

I agree with Sylvia A. Animals have no voice. People, e.g., our soldiers, have a voice with which to bring attention and seek help for wrongs that are being done. Their fight for justice may be long, but at least they have the capability of voicing their concerns, their outrage, their fears, and even their helplessness. Just recently, the mistreatment of injured vets in government medical facilities drew a tremendous amount of attention.

A Non-human animal has no way to defend itself or to get help on its own, other than attacking its tormentor, which of course is frowned upon by society. And since society often doesn't know why the animal attacked the person, the animal is feared and despised and is put down for being a vicious animal and a threat to society. Sometimes that's true, but sometimes it's not.

These are just my opinions, though, and I respect your belief that many human beings deserve more representation. .Not everyone can work on curing or improving all the ills in the world. Even with the few issues that I take an interest in, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the injustices and horrors that I read about. I still carry memories of news articles I read years and years ago about a woman who was raped and murdered, and about a young toddler who was brutally tortured by his own father. I feel like my mind actually has trouble computing such sadistic behaviors. I admit that I am too weak to follow and directly address human on human torture. There are people in organizations that take on the onus of child welfare, not necessarily doing a good job of it. However, there can be verbal communication between them and victims - a blessing that is unfortunately not available to non-human animals.

Two arrests were made yesterday in Plainville due to disorderly conduct and cruelty to animals.
Severino Cruz, 33, and his brother Enrique Cruz, 28, both of Plainville, were arrested for cruelty to animals, an unvaccinated dog and unlicensed dog.

They both live together.
Severino Cruz's son, Nick Cruz, 8, was bitten by a pet pitbull named Baby on Sunday. Severino was at work when the dog, belonging to Enrique, got loose and bit Severino's son.

Enrique took Nick to the hospital. Meanwhile, Severino found out what happened, grabbed a power drill and drilled the dog in the head several times. The dog was not killed, but was severely injured.

Enrique found out what his brother did and reported it to the police.
Police investigated and found that the dogs were living under very poor conditions. It also seemed that they were suffering from malnutrition.

When police went to the house, they found another pitbull by the name of Coffee. The dog was taken by police, placed in a pound, and will be up for adoption shortly.
Severino was held yesterday on a $50,000 bond. He appeared in court today and his bond was reduced to $25,000. He's still incarcerated.
Enrique was given a $10,000 non-surety bond and was released yesterday. The court date is set for January 22nd.Case Updates
Police have found a new home for a pit bull puppy whose mother was euthanized on Sunday because a man had made holes in the dog's head with a power drill.
The 4-month old puppy, whose former owner had named it Coffee, was taken from the home of Enrique and Severino Cruz on Sunday. On Tuesday, town Animal Control Officer Gabrielle Paciotti said a family from Portland is adopting the puppy. The police had put out calls for someone to adopt the puppy and Paciotti said the new owners are expected to take the dog home on Saturday.

Severino Cruz is accused of drilling holes in the mother dog's head because she bit his son.

Enrique Cruz owned both dogs and said on Tuesday he was so upset by what happened that he wanted police to take the puppy. Police Capt. Peter Costanzo said officers were worried about the dog because it appeared to be malnourished and neglected, something Cruz disputes.

The pit bull that was euthanized was named Baby and was a little more than a year old. Enrique Cruz said the two dogs were friendly animals that frequently played with his cousin Severino's children.

Cruz said his two nephews were playing with the dogs on Sunday. He said Coffee jumped on top of the younger child and that the older nephew, Nick, tried to pull the puppy off him. As Nick did that, Baby ran up to him and bit the 8-year-old boy on his arm.

Severino was not home when this happened, and Enrique took his nephew to the hospital. In the meantime, Severino learned what had happened and went to the house. There, Costanzo said, he used a power drill to bore several holes in Baby's head. He then went to the hospital to check on his son, Costanzo said.

Enrique Cruz said he left his nephew at the hospital and was going to meet police at the house to describe what happened. When he got there he found Baby badly injured. Police went back to the hospital where they found Severino Cruz, who had blood on his hands and clothing. Enrique Cruz said police also found a drill in his cousin's truck.

Enrique and Severino Cruz, both of 346 Farmington Ave., are charged with cruelty to animals. But Enrique Cruz said he is not angry at his cousin.

I am still very angry about this so called man. Drs have proven that people that abuse animals most often become serial killers. The thrill of killing animals is not enough they move on to people for a bigger thrill. How did man get to become a pet owner in the first place? Is there a history of past anomal abuse, spousal abuse, or worse in this mans past?He needs to feel exactly the excriuating pain he caused this dog and anything else he's harmed! Jail is too good for this man. I pity his poor children and wife if she's brave enough to have remained with this SOB. Thank you for allowing me to vent about this.

What did this guy think was going to happen to his kid if he bought a pit bull and mistreated it from the get go? They aren't bred for loving, after all. A pity the dog had to suffer for his owner's stupidity. Now it's time to punish Mr Drillbit in like fashion. Trephination, I say!

Noted, and petition signed and forwarded.

I am days behind in anything current due to a new job and a move, but I was so outraged at this horrible act of cruelty that I my faith in human kind gets more doubtful everyday.

If we as human beings have so little care about our fellow livng creatures...we are sure to be the very end of ourselves in the near and dear future.
For if we turn our heads, ignore all the violence that humans commit on all other living beings...we have no hope. As the human animals progress through time...we get more apathetic to all other living things. This CANNOT HAPPEN. It MUST NOT. For our failure to have concern, care and empathy for aALL LIVING THINGS...ALL this suffering...we fail to care for ALL things. ALL.
If we care not for this precious creature..this innocent dog..who suffered so much at the hands of this evil creature...how can we teach our children compassion for others? How can we teach children to care for ALL living things. ALL LIVING THINGS. WE HAVE TO CARE FOR ALL LIVING THINGS...WE MUST...SURVIVAL DEPENDS UPON IT. There is no we..them..there is only ALL FO US. WE ARE ALL CONNECTED. Why can't everyone understand this? It is so easy...uncomplicated....
WE ARE ALL CONNECTED IN THIS WEB OF LIFE...FOR WHAT WE DO UNTO THE WEB...WE DO UNTO OURSELVES. WE ARE ALL ONE.
We spend so much time creating these stupid, arrogant groups of you..them us...that people have become selfish..self absorbed and this is not how to exist in this world.
I cried today for this innocent creature..this living animal. Who did nothing more but be born into this world.
And what was the end result? TORTURE, MISERY, AND UNDENIABLE PAIN. WHY? FOR BEING AN ANIMAL THAT WAS KEPT IN A CAGE. BY A HUMAN BEING.
I CAN PROMISE YOU THAT THIS DOG...WAS NOT HELD, LOVED NOR NEARLY ENOUGH GENTILNESS FROM THIS SORRY EXCUSE OF A HUMAN BEING.
Nobody cried for this dog while it was alive. No one protected it from the abuse..neglect and starvation.
So if you can't have compassion for this innocent victim of violence....then I have a big question about peoples compassion for anything.
The time for the old belief system of them and us (whether it be human, animal, species, religion, race, sexual orientation...whatever....you choose to put in categories.... serves no purpose anymore. We either start working for ALL, or work for none. Care for ALL...or care for NONE.
There ...I've said my piece..ranted...

There is a special place in hell for this man. I hope he exist in hell until the end of time with the same punishment and pain he instilled upon "Baby". The Powers That Be are holding dear Baby in their loving arms, and he/she will be in a better place than this house from hell. If the authorities do not punish this man with a long time stay in prison I can almost guarantee this SOB, this sick son a devil will repeat his actions again because they never learn to be compassionate toward anything but themselves...ever.*Oh..and this picture of the wolf..that's the world looking at you now "Severino Cruz". What goes around comes around..eventually. Rest in Peace dear "Baby". My love, thoughts and prayers are on the wind to you sweet love. ~Namaste~(For We Are One) Wolfweep's

A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL WHO NOTED AND SIGNED!!! This news did not only make #1 most noted and most commented for the week, more importantly we've exceeded our signature goal with 2,495 signatures in less than a week! Hopefully it will keep growing till its time to submit them on court date. Thank you!!

As for Scott S., it's been awhile since someone compared animal vs. human causes; nevertheless, it's still a tiresome debate for me. If you subscribe to Care2 News Junkies, with some few exceptions like this past week, you will see that human causes get more notes and discussions though it seems comments like yours are brought up when an animal story gets alot of notes. As if it's undeserving, like no animal cause is worth that much attention. Sorry if I'm wrong but that's how I see it from being here too long. I hardly send mails to note my news but I promoted this from the moon and back that I got others to join this site. This story is so heinous and disturbing; and, as Patricia S. pointed out, it is a well documented fact that animal cruelty is linked to human abuse...domestic violence to serial killers-- they just escalate so this cause should be of great concern to all. I may have deleted the past newsletters but here's the C2NN weekly ranking this past week:

2. Stop Aerial Hunting of Wolves - Support the PAW Act (230)
3. Johnny Depp's £1m gift for Great Ormond Street, the hospital that saved his daughter's life | the Daily Mail (187)
4. Gorilla sanctuary is Congo war front (182)

I'm here on Care2 mainly for the animals. I note and sign petitions for human causes as well but if I see news posted here that I've seen on CNN or other national media outlets, I do not note it. Animals are hardly covered in the media except for stories about how bad pitbulls are or lately, Tatiana's attack. If you like to compare, like some have brought up, animals DO NOT have a voice. They do not get representation. Humans have their own voice; in addition, they have support from friends, families, lawyers, multi-million organizations, elected officials, etc.-- all have their own voice that can be heard and understood. Animals do not torture and kill for pleasure; humans do. Guess who is always innocent, under represented and automatically gets the death sentence without a trial?

Here's an article about animal activists if you're interested to know who we are and why we do what we do:
Animal Rights Is a Dirty Word

I submitted it as news some time ago but didn't really publicize it much as personally, I find news with action alerts more important. Still a good quick read nonetheless.

There are enough causes for everyone to get involved in. What right does anyone have to dictate where our efforts should lie? Or even imply which cause is more important? It's divisive and counter-productive. We can gain more by getting others involved. Get those apathetic people to pitch in, make them care. God knows there's plenty of them. George Bush in office for 2 terms is enough proof of that. Educate others, recruit them to help your cause, join Care2 or get out the vote. Get more people to care and act to make this world a better place. This is all I have to say about this matter. I'm not here to debate which cause is more important or change anyone's mind. I'm here to learn, raise awareness and take action. Thank you.

(off my soapbox)

I can't believe that anyone would be cruel and heartless enough to drill holes in the head of another living creature. Just because your pet bit 1 of your family members, it doesn't make it a good enough excuse to abuse it in such a way. There are many proper ways to teach a dog what they should and shouldn't do, in a proper, nice and kind way. What this guy did was plain evil... The poor dog doesn't deserve such a painful torture!!!

If you'd ask me, I think the brother (Enrique) should be punished too-- he just stood by and watched his brother do such a hideous thing to his own dog??!

Noted and I will be attending this court date in CT as a member of the AWF-CT. This is heart breaking and these individuals will be charged and serve their consequences. If you are a CT resident the date is Feb 14, 2008 ...things you can do:
1) Attend the Hearing that is scheduled for Thursday, February 14th at 9AM at Bristol Superior Court. (131 North Main Street, Bristol, CT 06010 ). A large show of public support to prosecute Mr. Cruz to the fullest extent of the law would help make an important statement about the serious nature of this crime.

2) Write to the Prosecutor Steven Preleski (same address as the Superior Court) and encourage him to seek the maximum punishment for this crime.

3) Consider adopting a pitbull. The Plainville Shelter has several loving pitbulls that are in desperate need of a home. You can help this very misunderstood and needy breed by opening your heart and home to a homeless dog. Check out Lucky, just one of the many sweet and loving pitbulls that desperately needs a good home. http://search.pet finder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9935606

Thanks Wolfweeps, good points. Nadia PLEASE include me in your newstories to note, petitions, updates, anytime as they are always welcome. Kimberly, blessings for the update about FEB hearing. wish I could be there. I love Care2 and appreciate the resources here.

Also, I believe anyone who is violent against an animal has strong potential of violence against anyone, children/fellow human being; and this I find, is well supported by documented studies.

Years of turning blind eye and tolerating wrongful acts of violence against animals has not resolved problems and continued harm, deaths, and domestic violence is worse than ever.

I commend Care2 members for helping make positive change which I BELIEVE WIILL bring positive affect for families and friends along with our animal friends.

No one has the right to inflict harm upon another, regardless. The idea of it is wrong and it is good everyone know repurcussions of their actions; offenders, potentional offenders, everyone should be aware of penalties, felony charges, permanent criminal records, and such.

Would YOU want the likes of someone who will drill an animal in the skill 4 times, an animal abuser around YOUR kids, school, playgrounds, or nearby baby sitting or around your pets even? they could work for vets or shelters or kindergarten, how would we know unless they are tagged with their offensive history?

Up until now, failure to act brought us right here where the harm continues.

Protecting the voiceless is what this is about and to those who harm I question their judgement, are the innocent and voiceless equal? Are children and pets along the same line to hit? or worse?
Has anyone thought along those lines? One cannot talk, some can be threatened by fear/death, seems
inflicting harm/pain without being caught and lack of reasoning with possible lack of ability to refrain themselves, whether animals, children, human.

I am not a professional but I did survive an abusive relationship and I have seen how quickly harm can come without much thought behind the blow, it is too late after the fact to "fix" things, but I am not willing to bet the life of child or animal on my being wrong.

These unpredictable hot tempered violent acts come from unbalanced people who lack ability to refrain from harming and so far, have continued to get off scott free for these acts and worse.

Sorry for the rant but sometimes the reality of it should be considered, nothing about this is pretty and not sure that animal abuse might be taken a bit too lightly at times. think its time we all think what if this happened in our families and what kind of person does that? would we want them around without any record or having to pay for these acts I mean really, this is a worthy cause,

off my soap box, if anyone is offended well, not my intention, blessed day and thanks, off my soap box, canceling tracking, pm direct if need be.
