Petition: Extend the PTC
Help secure our energy future with clean, affordable and homegrown energy:
Urge Congress to extend the renewable energy credit

We believe that it is in our country’s strategic interest to harness our plentiful homegrown renewable energy sources to power our homes and businesses. Thus, we respectfully urge Congress to extend the renewable energy production tax credit (PTC) immediately.

The PTC is an effective tool to encourage the development of proven renewable energy projects. The PTC has been instrumental in helping the wind industry to:

• Lower the cost of wind power by more than 90%
• Manufacture components for wind turbines at nearly 500 U.S. manufacturing facilities
• Power the equivalent of 12 million American homes
• Provide 35% of all new U.S. power capacity in the past five years

By extending the PTC, Congress will drive the growth of American wind energy. Energy security requires a diverse supply of domestic sources of which wind energy is a prominent part. We urge Congress to take action to extend the PTC as soon as the Congressional session resumes.

Yes, this is what Diane means when she keeps insisting wind energy companies are in trouble: she means Republicans have, so far successfully, obstructed renewing PTCs in order to put wind energy companies out of business. I have signed this at least twice (once for each of my Senators, and I think somewhere else too) but I'll see if I'll be allowed to sign again.

Thanks Joanne--multiple groups have things going on this issue. Continuing the current program would take less money than is currently in gas and oil subsidies--add in nuclear subsidies, that has yet to become profitable, and the program could be expanded a lot. Historically the government helped underwrite new industries, technologies since new businesses take more than three years before profitability is expected (IRS gives up to 7 years); thus it is too soon to be cutting off supports to the new businesses. The other industries are well past that time period and overdue for ending their government support.
You cannot currently send a star to Joanne because you have done so within the last week.

We cannot remove current power facilities from production, but we can switch future power facilities to use of more sustainable energy sources and phase in geothermal hotwells to replace coal and oil power when existing plants need complete rebuilds. Solar concentrators and PV plates are good for daytime fill in power and wind farms, once built, are sustainable added power feeds for both centralised distribution and individualised power boosters at the consumer end, where a combination of small home and farm windmills adds to the main grid and its fossil, nuclear, wind, geothermal, solar, and ocean current/tide power mix. Look towards the mix to prove viability of individual components, and accelerate acceptance of those that actually work!
