Puerto Rico begins building large solar park

The Associated Press

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Construction has started in Puerto Rico on what will soon be the Caribbean's largest solar energy park.

The $265 million project is being built in southern Puerto Rico and is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 13,000 homes in the U.S. territory.

The park features 270,000 solar panels and is being financed by CIRO Energy Group and One Planet Caribbean of San Juan and San Francisco-based GCL Solar Energy Inc.

CIRO Group executive Ruben Perez said Friday that the project will help save 236 million barrels of petroleum a year and reduce greenhouse emissions by 217 billion pounds.

Puerto Rico's government also expects construction to start soon on what will be the region's largest wind farm. It will be near the island's southern coast.

That's one way to look at it Ben. I've had good friends who grew up in Puerto Rico--some returned, bu not all. I know this can help make a difference for those who live there at least.

Can't wait for the U.S. to fully embrace Green Energy, leaving behind old fossil fuel technologies that do not serve the 21st Century and beyond. Germany is a great model, let's emulate that!

Noted, Thank you J. L. A.

as long as they didnt tear down a rain forest or any sort of forest at all. I'm all for Solar Panels but I'll be damned if I support anything that has to do with clear cutting for any reason...

Noted. Yes, we should definitely take a big cue from Puerto Rico here. Hopefully the next 4 yrs. will be a big boom for the Green Energy industry and bring great jobs for many, while ridding ourselves of dirty energy....as long as GOP congressional obstruction is over...

Good points Lois--last night CA's voters passed their own green energy initiative that should add 40,000 green jobs. You cannot currently send a star to Lois because you have done so within the last week.
