It’s Time Drakes Estero Became Wilderness: Interior Secretary Salazar is poised to decide, any day now, the fate of Drakes Estero in Point Reyes National Park in California. In 1976, Congress passed the Point Reyes Wilderness Act, granting wilderness protection to the area once a commercial oyster farm lease expired on November 30, 2012. However, special interests prevailed in pressuring political leaders to stop that from automatically occurring, and legislation was passed that put the decision in Sec. Salazar’s hands. The National Parks Conservation Association just recently spoke out on the issue, “Wilderness is an endangered species in the continental United States, and marine wilderness is even less common…Without the bustle of business and a noticeable commercial footprint in the middle of Drakes Bay, enhanced opportunities for recreation, wildlife viewing, and the much-revered quality of solitude will be enjoyed by all who visit Point Reyes National Seashore. Such an experience simply cannot be replicated; nor can the opportunity before Secretary Salazar.” Read more by clicking here.

If you haven’t already, please urge Sec. Salazar to grant wilderness designation to Drakes Estero as Congress and the American people decided nearly 40 years ago. You can email him at You can sign a petition at:

Thank you!

Meanwhile, the California Coastal Commission says the oyster farm continues to violate state laws (and operate without a state permit) and plans to take action against the company next month.

With all due respect, I believe many here at Care2 would choose to support the Turtle Restoration Network, who posted this petition. They may have made an imperfect choice of where to post, but their cause is worth supporting nonetheless.

GREAT NEWS!! Our vices were heard

In a watershed decision for national parks and wilderness areas, Interior Department Secretary Ken Salazar announced today that he will uphold the 1976 Point Reyes Wilderness Act and protect the National Seashore’s ecological heart, Drakes Estero.

Salazar declined to issue a new permit for a controversial commercial oyster operation in the biologically rich estuary, thereby affording it the nation’s highest resource protection status and creating the West Coast’s first marine wilderness area.
