The U.S. Senate has 100 senators, but 41 make almost every decision. The filibuster, now employed routinely, allows this minority-rule. Want to see the super-wealthy taxed? Wars ended? Assault weapons banned? Fossil fuel subsidies eliminated?

The U.S. Senate has 100 senators, but 41 make almost every decision.

The filibuster, now employed routinely, allows this minority-rule.

Want to see the super-wealthy taxed? Wars ended? Assault weapons banned? Fossil fuel subsidies eliminated?

Any step for peace or justice will be an even steeper uphill climb with the filibuster in place.

This Senate rule is not in the Constitution or any law. It can be changed or eliminated on Day 1 of the new session by a simple majority of 51 senators.

"Fixing" minority rule so that the 41 deciders of our public policies are "required" to talk about what they're doing at length on television will not solve the problem any more than throwing Brer Rabbit in the briar patch.

Please write to your two senators right now below, with a CC to the President, urging them to end the filibuster.

I signed even though I am Canadian (love Washington State!)

Minority rule is what the US is experiencing now because the 1% and corporations have bought and paid for their political whores! A fix is good, but doing away with the filibuster is even better. It is only good until the next session anyway.

This stupid filibuster has been used to block important legislation! We need it to go away so we can finally get work done!

There is a very good reason why it is there. To prevent the excesses of the mob. Yes it is frustrating but it works. As humans we get a bright idea that in the long run is a real loser. Prohibition for instance. The drug war. but there are reasons to slow down and really think. We are an urban culture with the flyovers. But do not the flyovers have rights, problems and a say that the Urbans do not understand?

I'm not convinced on this. Too risky. In this political climate, it could mean the end of SS, MediCare, MediCaid, voting rights, women's rights, minority rights, workers' rights and any other program that benefits someone besides billionaires. If you have doubts about that, I refer you to the recent history in Wisconsin and Michigan.

But, at least, if they filibuster, make them actually get up there and talk for hours, days if necessary. Put it on

Well I will push for elimination in the hope of getting the original talking filibuster back. The point with keeping the talking filibuster is that forces Obstruction in to the light of day and put a political price on obstruction and those who are working against the common good of the People, corporations are not people, unlike now where it can all be done on the sly with no transparency and no consequences.
How ever as usual there are two things in the Senate Rules that are actually worse than thefilibuster that seldom if ever get mentioned. They are the Personal Hold and the Secret Hold which go beyond the filibuster to give ONE Senator veto power over any bill just like a filibuster and they also require cloture votes of 61 to end. Holds do not and never have require any one to stand up and speak against to oppose a bill all they require is a Senator getting approval from their Leadership who then announces the hold and the circus goes on from there.

I've always contended that for a filibuster there should be a minimum of 45% of the populace represented by the Senators involved, with each Senator coulted as representing 50% of their state's people. The 41 who constantly filibustered represented 16% of the people. The idea of the filibuster was to prevent the majority of the people from trampling on the minority. Now we have the small minotity terrorizing the large majority.

The filibuster should continue, but with safeguards to prevent the kind of misuse we've seen. They also need to remove the ability to put a hold on bills and end every form of political secrecy.

Green stars given where I could. For those who expressed reservations about signing, my concerned response is to ask each to consider whether or not each is choosing an ends justifies the means position.
