Three weeks ago, President Obama made a powerful statement in the middle of a powerful speech.
"The commitments we make to each other through Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us."
The President is right. But with members of Congress -- and some within his own administration -- talking about big cuts in exchange for some "grand bargain" with Republicans, it's time for President Obama to prove that those were more than words.
President Obama will deliver his State of the Union address tomorrow night. Sign our petition to demand he take a hard line against cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid!
The President's reelection was a referendum on where we wanted our country to go. And Americans rightly rejected the side that said anyone who loses her job is lazy. That anyone who needs a helping hand is a moocher. That our country is too broke to help those who need it -- but that the rich should pay less in taxes anyway.
That's not who we are as Americans. We look out for each other. We support our neighbors through hard times. And Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are how we do it.
Truth be told, we need to expand our commitment to our fellow Americans. Seniors are falling behind. Too many low-income workers can't afford the health care they need. But yet Republicans are clamoring to throw them to the wolves.
With so many still suffering, we cannot afford to cut the benefits people rely on. We cannot afford to slash Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
Tell President Obama to use his State of the Union to draw a hard line: no cuts to Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security.

Noted. Signed. Americans need to hear this message in the SOTU, then they need to see if followed up with action. We need change that we can see, and until that happens, we all need to keep the pressure on both the White House and the Congress.

I believe you need a real petition to demand that Obama explain how he is going to pay down the debt so that we can save these social programs. It's difficult to keep these programs alive when there's no social security "fund" ( think ponzi scheme if you will be honest) and when our taxpayers are funding over $60 billion in fraud and abuse in medicare and medicaid. Seems that you folks are putting the cart before the horse. Basic math seems to escape liberal thinking.
The largest generation is now retiring, the baby boomers, all 78.2 million of us who have paid the lion's share into social security and once we stop paying into it (it has already begun) then who are you going to tap to pay up?

Paying down the debt right now would be economic suicide according the world's economists so that shouldn't even be a part of this conversation if it is about what is good for the country.

I believe it is possible to at least start things moving in the right direction during this term Zee...the willingness of the GOP to put the country before partisan gamesmanship will determine how far and how much gets accomplished. You cannot currently send a star to Zee because you have done so within the last week.
