Quote from copywritten article at the site:

"The foundation is offering $100,000 in grant money to fund any group that can come up with a prototype "that significantly preserves or enhances pleasure, in order to improve uptake and regular use."

Condoms have been around for more than 400 years, but have had the same basic design without any major changes for much of the past 50 years.

As it stands, less than one in seven humans on earth currently use a condom for sexual activity. The Gates foundation says a "lack of perceived incentive for consistent use" is holding back wider adoption."

Bill the gazillionaire might also want to pour some serious cash into doing something like saving our planet from climate change. Extinction will make condoms irrelevant.

So true and well said Brian! Will they create a condom for downloading now? And make sure those for Africa are not white!

@ Brian -I suppose Mr Gates is thinking that by funding and pushing geoingeneering he is giving his share to that.

I guess he thinks extinction may be postponed if population growth is slowed. You cannot currently send a star to Angelika because you have done so within the last day.

Arghhh. Why doesn't he go the whole way ... and advocate cycberonly'''sex''' ? Just imagine the "enhanced pleasure" a fully-programmable (just don't use Mega$hit-SW to run it) wireless interfaced turbo-Orgasmator could give him, or you (if you are so inclined) !

in my vocabulary it's
cyber-''''sex''''
telfone-'''sex'''
and
rubber-jerk, er, rubber-''sex'' (((an interesting option for foreplay, though)))

I have talked with many man about this over the years. Very few say that wearing a condom has decreased the pleasure factor. Most of those that claim it does cause less sensation, also believe that they know the women they are with are completely disease free. Must be extra special inborn psychic powers.

We all know that this has been discussed in a very negative light for many years. It's logical to conclude that wearing any thing that comes between a man's most cherished part of his anatomy and his sexual partner would be assumed to be an interference.

The greater problem, I think would be those in countries where there is an absolute long standing belief that wearing a condom is against either god's will or the natural order of things. These too are the most populace countries, that ironically have the greatest need for population and disease control.

Though I believe that Gates may have the greater good on his agenda, that does not mean a new condom would be accepted by those who need to use it the most.

Just an added note. Bill Maher discussed this on his show of last Friday night and while bringing up these beliefs that a condom is detrimental to pleasurable sex, he shook his head and said, "absolutist not true". I think people in show business just might have more occasion to test this hypothesis than most.

Well, I have to admit it has been a long time, by choice, but my opinion used to be there is a definite difference in sensation with or without for the male, don't know about the female reaction and never tried anything other than "standard" whatever that is. Even so, I'm not sure this is the best thing he could spend his money on. And as Kit pointed out, what we do here in the West is likely not going to have much effect on the world. Not the biggest bang for his buck.

Which, tangentially, sort of amuses me in this context. I hear people saying this ALL the time now, including women, it has become part of the political lexicon, the business lexicon and has always been part of show business. That's not what amuses me. It is that I find it so ironic that no one remembers the origin of this phrase. It originated as a reference to women of the evening, as I mentioned in another story, the best bang for the buck referred to a personal experience, not a communal one. In plainer language, it was a male way of "judging" the talents at the local den of iniquity, or just judging women. So to hear women using the phrase now, well, it seems to have taken on a new meaning and no one but me, perhaps, remembers that it was originally a pejorative toward women, not a way to measure the best return on investment. :^)

Just what we need, a condom that only works when it feels like it and gives lots of 404 failures.

Gates did fine when he was stealing Apple's stuff back in the beginning, but it 's not a goodf idea to have condoms with so many holes in it.

Oh, BTW Kit, I think most men don't like stopping at the height of arousal to put on a condom. I know I didn't, but in reality sex is mostly mental anyway, so a brain condom would be the thing to cause a lack of sensation.

Kit B. (276)
Friday March 29, 2013, 3:54 pm

Indeed Robert, for all humans the greatest sensory organ is the brain.

Gates however, began with DOS which became Windows and/or Microsoft. Very much in direct competition with Apple.

I'd like to see this $$$$ spent on a different venture but if he's focused on reinventing the condom, then a unique one for african Males as that continent could really benefit!! Thanks JL.

Several of you took my thoughts and posted them. I'm glad that we're pretty much all on the same page. So how do you psychologically implant that into the most populace countries so they will use them especially with so many mystical thoughts and beliefs within their culture? I don't have the answer but I give gates credit for trying.

Well, if the propaganda about this makes more usage and BRINGS THE POPULATION DOWN...

The Gates Foundation should really GIVE CONDOMS AWAY FREE EVERYWHERE - in poor countries as well as rich ones -
Condoms should be available FREE in all gas stations, hotels, motels, rest stops, restaurant bathrooms, colleges, high schools, hospitals, clinics, convenience stores, roadside kiosks...
FREE. And big ADS should encourage taking and using them!
This would both bring population down FAST, and prevent further spread of AIDS. Kids wouldn't be BORN with AIDS, only to DIE. It is only stupid religious beliefs that prevent this from happening...
It is so OBVIOUSLY DESPERATELY NEEDED.
It would be even better than the work the Gates Foundation does against diseases...

Mr Gates always has an angle....why doesn't he stay in his own back yard and make a biodegradable computer as changing condoms will do little to make any difference. He is another money monger who wants to control everything and I find he and his wife rather disgusting...do they feed the hungry and share all that money with the needy...no they just choose who and where they are going to target their add campaign to make themselves look good to us little people> If it wasn't for the apple guy Gates would still be a pimply faced looser.

Bill Gates, reinvent the computer software first before you go into condoms. If they are just as useless as your MS WINDOWS stuff ups, we will have a massive AIDS epidemic on our hands and we would need upgrades to make it worse. My life is rosy Apples now and I am not wasting hours looking at foggy Windows to make my life more miserable.
