Quote from copywritten article at the site:
" Proponents of the plan, however, say it would enable the United States to feed about 17 million more people each year, while helping to fight poverty by buying the crops of farmers in poor countries.

"According to people briefed on the soon-to-be released fiscal year 2014 budget, the administration is expected to propose ending the nearly 60-year practice of buying food from American farmers and then shipping it abroad.

"The administration is proposing that the government buy food in developing countries instead of shipping food from American farmers overseas, a process that typically takes months. The proposed change to the international food aid program is expected to save millions in shipping costs and get food more quickly to areas that need it. "

Tamara said it already! Plus you need your food in the country for your own people-unless you are to get the GMO crap only and other getting the good food? ;) Let's hope they will buy from locals and NOT from their own corporations that have settled in those countries!

American oversight on any given subject already in the toilet, poorer quality product, grown under poorer conditions, in poorer locations already in trouble standing on their own ... sounds OK, but really?

Thanks JL. A. Bound to be a great deal of controversy with a program that was to 'help' people. A whole new major business/money enterprise/industry was created, and became a Monster of inter-dependance with the "help the impoverished". Similar programs are in existence, drug wars, terrorism, to name a couple. These 'new' industries have Many middle people become financially dependent on these programs, and I'm not talking about the intended recipients of free food or commodities. ..

Very often, when food "aid" from the US flooded into another country, it actually WRECKED that country's economy, and RUINED local farmers, who couldn't compete with the "free food" to sell their crops locally.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED IN HAITI, when American rice flooded their market, RUINING Haiti's rice farming economy - and HAITI IS STILL SUFFERING FROM THAT. One cause of their extreme and enduring poverty...
That is just ONE example.
The U.S. govt, which ALREADY subsidized American Big Agro, with Farm Subsidies started during President Roosevelt's New Deal, that were SUPPOSED to help SMALL Family Farms, but ENDED UP IN THE GREEDY HANDS OF THE FARMING CORPORATE GIANTS INSTEAD -
besides, then, the Farm Subsidies, the U.S. govt bought surplus crops from these same Big Corporate Agro Giants, and shipped them overseas with the resulting expenditure of TIME - and of FOSSIL FUEL, also!!!

So our food "aid" program HURT MORE THAN IT HELPED, overseas - but ENRICHED BIG AGRO here at home. And Big Agro, in turn, got so rich and powerful, that it DESTROYED MUCH FAMILY FARMING here in the U.S. -
so, it was a
LOSE-LOSE program for the PEOPLE of EACH COUNTRY....

Remains to be seen if the Big Corporations will not try and pervert this new program somehow, turn it to their own benefit...... I'm not trusting them......

Food aid is just another scheme to get more taxes out of the gullible.
