Long-term services and supports like adult day services, personal attendant care, assistive technology, transportation and housing are critical to helping people with disabilities of any age live, learn work and play in their communities. Our current system forces people to spend down their financial assets until they reach poverty before they can receive the help they need, fails to provide realistic opportunities for personal planning, and fails to provide adequate support to families and other caregivers. America can and must do better.

Easter Seals needs your help to make it easier for people to access long-term services and supports options. We are partnering with other national organizations in sponsoring a petition to Congress. Tell Congress: Address Financing for Long-term Services and Supports.

Pleased as punch to sign them all, though I may have already done so on that last one. This so-called "spend down" has been around an awfully long time. I spent my working career in that system, an outcome of LBJ's Great Society that was well-meaning but poorly constructed and blew apart the African-American family structure because of the requirement that only one adult could be in a household receiving what was then called Aid to Families With Dependent Children, AFDC, turning them into liars or single parent households. They have not yet recovered from that terrible idea, nor has welfare reform helped. Requiring already impoverished people to essentially divest themselves of everything does not help anyone, it means that any misstep and they are homeless or worse. It gives them nothing to leave the program with, no basic support, not even a car to drive to work if they are ever fortunate enough to land a job. Programs created for the poor by people who have NO idea of what that feels like, IS like, are never going to work, they can't craft good legislation (even with the best of intentions) because they have no familiarity with what their constituents deal with on a daily basis. You have to have risen up out of that community to truly understand it and what it needs, and very, very few are able to do that.

The welfare reform passed in the 90's virtually assured never-ending poverty with its 50 month limit on assistance and support for no education program longer than two years. Two year programs, do not produce living wage jobs, mostly. Under the old AFDC program a recipient could get a four year degree, that was an incredible bargain, putting her, or him, in a position to get and keep a job that could put a family on track for self sustenance. It is SO short sighted to NOT provide education through a bachelor's degree, or less if that is what a student wants, because that short term investment is the life blood of the long term benefit to our society of having a well trained, educated work force. Temporary fixes are insane and they are all conservatives will consider. I guess the 1% really doesn't want to share its piece of the pie with anyone nor support any program which might produce employees that aren't white males. Europe is so far ahead of us in social matters, it is no surprise at our rankings being so low in virtually everything compared to civilized countries.

read and noted and signed petition on 5-10-13 this is totally unacceptable our government continues to wipe out vital programs that a lot of people need and depend on they need to start looking at themselves first and start giving up some of the perks they have and get that are all free quit playing games with people's lifes and start doing your job like fixing our broken economy, loss of employment, cost of living adjustments and so on.

Yes Why is it if you are illeagly here or a crimmal you get Free Medical, and if your a reg US citezen with little or some money, your screwed When regluar people need a little or some help you don't have enough or to much money they seem to want to take all of your money and assets before they say they can help, then you gotta wait and if you are still alive or living on the street. you still might not meet their rules. Why can't the gov. do the right things. Treat people in Jail have more rights the our Miltary, the people in Jail are in there for a reason their Mail should be montiored and how many right so they have. AT ONE TIME IN MY LIFE I WAS EVEN THINKING OF DOING SOMETHING SO I COULD GO TO JAIL AND BE TOOK CARE OF PLUS MEDICAL. WHY DOES THE GOV LOVE TO WASTE OUR MONEY--WHY DOES THE GOV NOT CHECK SS & DISABILTY CHECKS
I THINK EVER 3-5 YEARS PEOPLE GETTING CHECKS FROM OUR GOV. MAKE SURE THAT IT IS THE PERSON AND NOT A ILLEGAL OR SCAMERS THAT GET MORE THAN ONE CHECK AND THE PERSON IS STILL ALIVE ..JUST A NOTHER WAY TO GET RID OF AMERICAS BACKBONE US REGLUAR AND LITTLE PEOPLE. WE need to all hold hands, talk to each other, listen and think what is right what is wrong what can I or we do l
Do I/ we really love or like our country do we respect and honor our US Flag and saulate or place our hand over our heart to show our pledge love respect for our Flag and People who gave their Life or more for the things we were taught about our country when we were growing up. STAND UP AMERCIA TAKE BACK OUR HOPE & BELIFES AND LITTLE BY LITTLE MAYBE WE CAN BE A GREAT COUNTRY AGAIN THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE NO MATTER HOW SMALL IT SEAMS DONT LET OUR GOV SELL US OUT AND OUR LAND LET US BE SEEN AND HEARD IN MANY STRONGS WAYS and don't do any bad things here me and think, look around and see and DONT BELIVE EVERTHING YOU SEE AND HEAR IN OUR NEWS they are out to make money too.

Distressing, isn't it, that we have to beg for basic needs? Cutting back on services to those in need will not balance the budget. Those with the means to pay must do so, like it or not. It's called paying your fair share!
