the High School Data Transparency Act (H.R. 455/S. 217), which would require high schools to report basic data on the number of female and male students in their athletic programs and the expenditures made for their sports teams.

As the student athlete lunges into the air at center court, her arm stretched out to smack the twirling basketball towards her teammates, all she can think about is… tomorrow's algebra test.

If only their games were on Friday night or Saturday night, like the boys' basketball games. Then they wouldn't have to worry about juggling games and schoolwork. Then they would have the support of a cheering crowd on its feet, ushering them towards the basket, instead of nearly empty bleachers. Then maybe they wouldn't feel unequal; they wouldn't feel like second-class athletes.

TAKE ACTION:
Urge your members of Congress to cosponsor the High School Data Transparency Act (H.R. 455/S. 217).
By 2009, Amber Parker had seen this scene play out too many times as a former coach of the Franklin County High School girls' varsity basketball team and a parent of one of the student athletes. That year, she sued the the Franklin County Community School Corporation and the other school districts against which Franklin plays on behalf of her daughter. The suit alleged violations of Title IX due to the disparity in scheduling of games between the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams. In October 2012, the parents finally reached a settlement with the county that will require progressive improvements in scheduling girls' varsity basketball games.

But it doesn't have to be this way – girls shouldn't be made to feel like second-class athletes in the first place, and it shouldn't take three years to resolve an issue like this. Instead of shaking our heads while we read Amber's story, let's go to bat for girls in sports and level the playing field.

Yesterday, members of the AAUW Action Fund Capitol Hill Lobby Corps visited Capitol Hill and urged representatives to cosponsor the High School Data Transparency Act (H.R. 455/S. 217), which would require high schools to report basic data on the number of female and male students in their athletic programs and the expenditures made for their sports teams. More information can help high schools better comply with Title IX and continue expanding athletic opportunities so that no student has to encounter discrepancies like what Amber's daughter and other young women experienced.

Help us drive home the message delivered by Lobby Corps yesterday and build momentum around this issue: Contact your members of Congress today and urge them to cosponsor the High School Data Transparency Act (H.R. 455/S. 217).

I know--despite the law being almost half a century old, there are still schools that ignore it: You cannot currently send a star to Jude because you have done so within the last day.
