So many people live in fear of their own bodies because they're told too much fat causes diabetes. Meet a doctor who thinks we got this wrong, and learn how he's rewriting science to prove that fat is a symptom, not a cause.

Wow, he is PROGRESS! Challenging the established knowledge because it is ever evolving. The non-judgmental multidisciplinary approach he is aiming for might just hold the answer to this ever increasing problem.
He is so worthy of being a doctor... thank you for this wonderful post Jl!

Powerful and moving video. I have never heard a doctor speak like that. Or exhibit that degree of empathy. I've seen empathy in doctors, don't misunderstand, just not to that degree. That, he, is what doctors should all be. Amazing, and wonderful. That is a healer. Not just a doctor.

Noted. Thanks, JL. That was powerful! And, it sounds to me like he's on the right track. Will the problem be found to be metabolic? What if research finds that all the high fructose corn syrup in so many food products is truly damaging some people more than others? Gonna be a fight with those food manufacturers. What if it's found that GM food also has a heavy hand in it? And what about the pharmaceutical companies making their money off people's illnesses and diseases that are found to be foodborne? I look forward to the research found by this doctor.

Like others leaving comments here, I'm just blown away by this man. TED is the reason that people like this do have a forum to bring their ideas forward. Recently, I have read many articles by doctors that dare to challenge the established ideas of obesity. some that even advance the idea that some of this obesity may even have roots in the chemicals we ingest and absorb. How wonderful that these minds dare to speak out and reconstruct what is seen as the final answers and search the possibilities. How impressive that these doctors would also challenge the Pharmaceutic industry. Maybe we can can finally solve this.

He is so right, scientific true must be revisited and challenged or it is no longer science. Empathy and compassion from a doctor? Who knew that was even possible? I was sure that it was long trained away.

This is an excellent video. In our culture, overweight people are the only minority that it's perfectly o.k. to ridicule and abuse. This minority is becoming more prevalent, and plenty of self-hate is involved, as well. It is really powerful when a person recognizes when they have been wrong, so at a personal level, this doctor is admirable as a human being.

As a doctor and practitioner of applied science, he has a very open mind, and an ability to recognize his own biases. The science is always changing, and it's so important to keep up with that. I am very fortunate to have had some excellent doctors who have these characteristics. They really are out there, and they have saved my life a number of times. The multidisciplinary approach is best too, as Eternal Gardener points out.

I love the TED platform. What a fantastic video find!! For so long, I've fought the attitude that overweight people are overweight because they eat too much and that is all. It just isn't truth. And doctors NEED to get out of the dark ages about this and realize that these people have illnesses that they could be helping. Whether it be insulin resistance, or thyroid hormone deficiencies, or malabsorption disorders causing the body to feel it is starving and so it stores everything put into the body as fat. Obesity is a symptom of a disease process. Period. This video gave me hope that maybe, just maybe, the tide will turn for the millions who suffer from diseases, of which obesity is just one of the many symptoms, but the one symptom that doctors blame the patient for. Thanks so much for sharing!

This, at my advanced age, made me stop and consider my own prejudices. This man is not challenging conventional wisdom nor others he is challenging himself. This alone makes him one hell of a Doctor.

Excellent. The great thing about science is that ultimately, science is not dogmatic. Hypothesis, experimentation, observation, conclusion: when a hypothesis is proven, it is considered the best understanding of a phenomenon....until someone comes along with a better hypothesis and demonstrates it through experimentation, observation, etc. Science is ever evolving because the more accurate a hypothesis is at explaining a phenomenon or process, then the more likely it is to become the accepted explanation until a better explanation comes along. Our knowledge base grows due to science, not dogma.

I was healed of diabetes about 5 years ago,

I took the natural path. I studied natural health and I'm 70 now. I had a recent check up. Diabetes is still all gone gone. I gave her a list of what I eat and Dr. said, "I don't mess with perfection."

"You didn't need my judgement and contempt, you needed my compassion and empathy"

We all have the ability to change and work towards our Highest and Best. When we drop ego, and Walk with some Humility, amazing changes open to us.

We can be grateful for people such as he. Thank you for this wonderful video.
