Congress has a decision to make in just three short weeks: will it take a stand against racism, violence and ethnic cleansing that is underway Burma? Or will it reward those who share responsibility for this unfolding tragedy by allowing sanctions on Burma to expire?

Take a stand for justice and demand that Congress act swiftly to ensure that sanctions remain in place for Burma.

Make no mistake — hate is on the march in Burma. A sophisticated, well-financed campaign against anyone who is Muslim is expanding. It is led by a band of nationalist racists including some Buddhist monks. And the Burmese government has proven either unwilling or incapable of stopping the spread of violence. According to independent sources, including the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur for Burma, it is complicit in these severe human rights abuses.

I was just there. I saw the effects of this widespread and pervasive ethnic tension: destroyed Mosques and neighborhoods that are now nothing but rubble and ashes; thousands of innocent people who happen to be ethnic minorities who have been stripped of all rights — including the right to travel, marry, work, or even have children — if they do not have permission of government forces.

And I witnessed firsthand what I thought we would never see again: The forcible placement of Muslim families and entire neighborhoods into remote camps that are far from their village or work and completely off-limits to anyone without government permission.

Our government must not reward those complicit in ethnic cleansing. Ask Congress to renew sanctions legislation before it expires in the next few weeks.

This is not a regime that should be rewarded with the lifting of remaining economic sanctions. Sanctions are the final bit of pressure the U.S. has left to demand that the Burmese government finally do what is right. And without action by Congress, they will expire by the end of this month.

Let me be frank this is urgent: The building blocks of genocide are being constructed at this very moment. Hundreds of thousands of lives are at stake. The last hope of those under attack in Burma is international pressure.

Sincerely,
Tom Andrews
President,
United to End Genocide

No matter which name we use, and I think the country would prefer Myanmar we are more likely to have impact by recognizing them as a country and negotiating then trying force our will. This country is barely released from military oppression.

Hatred is a festering sore that slowly eats away at the very essence of a person's core, and at a nation's well-being. It should be halted wherever it appears.
