It explores recent research on the health of the boreal and concludes with a set of clear, science-based guidelines for balancing conservation with development in the boreal.

The talk about saving this massive forest land seems directly tied to what Harper will or more appropriately will not do to allocate funding. We, planet earth, needs every forest we can protect.

You cannot currently send a star to Kit because you have done so within the last day. Hopefully this scientifically sound approach that bends to his business desires might make it.

Greed and politics, not a good combo for our planet.

This is an excellent article, and gives a bit of hope. Careful research is key to evaluating the forest ecosystem, and formulating some concrete plans. The indigenous populations can provide valuable input, and the article points out the importance of these groups' participation in the process.

People such as Harper should be voted out of office. The energy corporations are ruthless, and their urgency to move as fast as they can to make as much profit as possible, motivates them to buy out the politicians whenever that is possible. They apparently don't care about the environmental cost. One scenario that I hope does not come into being is North America becoming the last bastion of the fossil fuel extraction business in the decades to come. We could become a ruined wasteland, while countries like Saudi Arabia have enough foresight to phase out fossil fuel, and move toward sustainable and clean energy. They already have plans for a big shift toward solar, according to a couple of sources I have read. Thanks J.L.

We need every forest and tree we can save. We need to change to solar power and clean energy.

"But the boreal is also rich in natural resources prized by a number of extractive industries. International forestry, mining, oil and gas, and hydropower corporations are all active in Canada’s boreal."

Whenever I see this kind of statement I know the 1% are up to their usual tricks and hope that this time they can be thwarted. We here in Minnesota have a vestige of similar woodland, the Boundary Waters forest and it is protected but always under attack by those nibbling at its edges. I can only imagine how much greater that pressure must be in Canada, particularly under this government which much like our own considers all of nature a potential profit machine and does not care what was or what will be as a result.

There is hope. However, the rate of expansion around the city where I live has been astronomical. So much wild land has been lost to enormous housing developments and strip malls.

Dare I/we hope?
A visionary perspective, that includes compassion for the planet is what is needed here.

I hope that this report provides enough fodder to keep Harper happy and allow the Boreal the protection it needs so desperately. I agree with all here, It saddens me that we are down to the bare minimum of our beautiful, unspoiled places. So much lost because of the greed of mankind. Thanks my friend for posting this glimmer of hope.

Don't trust Harper - not exactly a good track record for the environment. Will keep fingers crossed.
Gene's right, the MN Boundry Waters area is constantly under attack. Still kind of surprised Pawlenty didn't give in over the yrs. But am very happy Dayton is here now.
Noted with thanks.
