"2 Texas Salamanders, 4,400 Acres Win Protection

Austin blind salamanderGood news for two fascinating critters from Texas (including one without eyes): The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Monday finally gave Endangered Species Act protection to Jollyville Plateau and Austin blind salamanders. The salamanders are also getting 4,400 acres of protected "critical habitat" in central Texas, where they cling to life in the state's few remaining clean, well-oxygenated springs.

The protections follow the Center for Biological Diversity's historic 2011 agreement with the Service to speed Endangered Species Act decisions for 757 species.

Austin blind salamanders lack image-forming eyes and have feathery external gills and long snouts, while Jollyville Plateau salamanders have big eyes and blunt, rounded snouts. But both creatures are fully aquatic and depend on clean water from Texas's Edwards aquifer -- water that's becoming scarcer and dirtier as the state's population grows. "

Noted - at the rate we humans are slaughtering, poaching and hunting each and every living animal, why am I not surprised!

Politicians and developers are so short-sighted, losing any species mean we lose a piece of our environment, some species do come to the end of their time, others like our Texas horned toad, is pushed out of time by careless developers and politicians that curry their favor.

I have a little family of Jollyville salamanders that live in my yard, and some times find their way into the house. I like lizards and their cousins and just scoop them up and put them back in the yard. They belong here, I as a human should probably be living in the city and leaving the country lands to creatures and farmers. I firmly believe we should be build up and not out.

It always makes me both sad and angry when articles like this are posted. It makes me feel so helpless when all I can do is note it and take note of it. Thanks for posting anyway, JL.

We are losing them, and I guess it's part of evolution and the laws of selection, but it's still very sad when we actually are faced with these endangered and close to extinct creatures...
