WASHINGTON - Seventeen-year-olds will soon be able to buy the "morning-after" emergency contraceptive without a doctor's prescription, a decision conservatives denounced as a blow to parental supervision of teens.

"Women's groups said the FDA's action was long overdue, since the agency's own medical reviewers had initially recommended that the contraceptive be made available without any age restrictions.

U.S. District Judge Edward Korman ruled last month in a lawsuit filed in New York that President George W. Bush's appointees let politics, not science, drive their decision to restrict over-the-counter access.

Korman ordered the FDA to let 17-year-olds get the birth control pills. He also directed the agency to evaluate whether all age restrictions should be lifted.

The FDA's latest action does not mean that Plan B will be immediately available to 17-year-olds.The manufacturer must first submit a request."

This is so wrong, why not protect yourself instead.

I agree Yvonne one should always protect themselves first and foremost..not only from pregnancy..but the many diseases one can get from 'unprotected sex' However..I would rather see this take place..then to add more unwanted..abandoned children in the world..

There are also cases of rape..incest..and this is a good thing for those who are in that situation..

Young adults..adolescents do not think clearly (even adults at times sadly don't) I would much rather see a solution to stop all the unwanted pregnancies..than to not have a solution..

People are human..they make mistakes..they should not be condemned and judged so much that they are forced (after the fact) to be pregnant..

Education..protection..both can fail..this is a good thing in my personal opinion..

I think they should have to have parental consent. If my teenager has to go to the doctor to sew his finger up or to get antibiotics for strep, etc, I or their mother has to sign a form consenting to the treatment. Why should this be any different? As parents we have the responsibility for the treatment decisions of our children until they are 18. Why should parents be left out of this decision?

There are no less than 20 bills in front of Congress right now that takes away parents rights.
Wake up folks, they may only be yours for a little while longer!

Well I have to disagree..
This protects and gives the right to mainly to those who are not able to go to their parents and get help in these situations..Maybe because of their religion..faith..or just control and or disagreement on the issue..a parent would not permit their child to have this..This allows them the freedom to choose for themselves..after all it is their life..their body..

I raised..(tried to) my children in a way that they knew they could come to me with anything..no matter what it was..no matter how bad they thought it was..and I was fortunate enough that my children did communicate with me..and though they did respects my feeling and thoughts on anything..they also knew I respected theirs..and to some degree allowed them to make many of their own decisions..That is afterall how they grow and learn..

So..if you are a parent your children can and do look up to and trust..there is no reason to worry..as they would always be willing to communicate with you..

I also know of a young 16 year old girl who was raped..and got pregnant..Absolutely petrified to tell her parents..she said she they would be disappointed..blame her for being in a situation that aloowed such a thing to happen..They were dead set against the abortion issue..and she felt there no way out for her so she took her own life..

Had this been available..that young girl would be alive today..

So yes this is a good thing for them..maybe not for you or me..This is for them..and any woman should be able to choose for herself on such a serious and life changing issue..I am glad they now can..
