"The hate-filled notes were revealed today in a criminal complaint that charged James von Brunn, 88, with first-degree murder in the death of Stephen Tyrone Johns, the museum guard who opened the door for elderly man to let him into the museum.

According to the complaint filed in federal court in Washington, handwritten notes found in von Brunn's car stated, "You want my weapons -- this is how you'll get them. The Holocaust is a lie. Obama was created by Jews. Obama does what his Jew owners tell him to do. Jews captured America's money. Jews control the mass media. The 1st Amendment is abrogated -- henceforth."

Linking Theory to Violent Action

byChip Berlet (senior analyst at Political Research Associates, a group based in Somerville, Mass., that studies extremist and authoritarian movements. He is co–author, with Matthew N. Lyons, of “Right-Wing Populism in America.”)

The alleged shooter at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum spread historical white supremacist views and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories through a Web site that included the hoax document “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” and a link to a Holocaust denial Web site.

The attack demonstrates why it is a mistake to ignore bigoted conspiracy theories. Law enforcement needs to enforce laws against criminal behavior. Vicious bigoted speech, however, is often protected by the First Amendment. We do not need new laws or to encourage government agencies to further erode our civil liberties. We need to stand up as moral people and speak out against the spread of bigoted conspiracy theories. That’s not a police problem, that’s our problem as people responsible for defending a free society.

Demagogues and conspiracy theorists use the same four “tools of fear.” These are 1) dualism; 2) scapegoating; 3) demonization; and 4) apocalyptic aggression.

The basic dynamics remain the same no matter the ideological leanings of the demonizers or the identity of their targets. It is the combination of demagogic demonization and widespread scapegoating that is so dangerous. In such circumstances, angry allegations can quickly turn into apocalyptic aggression and violence targeting scapegoated groups like Jews or immigrants. Meanwhile, our ability to resolve disputes through civic debate and compromise is hobbled.

Apocalyptic aggression is fueled by right-wing pundits who demonize scapegoated groups and individuals in our society, implying that it is urgent to stop them from wrecking the nation. Some angry people in their audience already believe conspiracy theories in which the same scapegoats are portrayed as subversive, destructive or evil. Add in aggressive apocalyptic ideas that suggest time is running out and quick action mandatory, and you have a perfect storm of mobilized resentment threatening to rain bigotry and violence across the United States.

Whether or not Obama was put into power by Jewish interests , is not the question. How this idiot was able to have firearms, period when he was already guilty of a previous felony and obviously mentally unbalanced, is the main issue here.
Unfortunately for the victim and his grieving family, there is much the DC government and Holocaust museum can do to make their grieving process as painless as possible. Maybe now, something more substantial will be legislated and implemated, to limit the accessibility of firearms to soulless humans such this poor lost soul and provided with medical/psychiatric monitoring and help so this kind of situation is less likely top occur again. This is an excellent example for why the NRA should not have some much leeway to promote the !st Amendment.
I'm sure that The Founding Fathers did not intend for anyone who bears arms to deliberately seek out and murder, in cold blood any innocent person, as a result of their diabolical hate of creed , colour or their distorted views of History. What a sad comment about our country and our world when these so-called humans are allowed to fester, unchecked and beyond healing, obviously. Why a red flag was not noticed long ago, about his deranged mind , is beyond me. The warning signs were there and now that he's taken a life, he's relinquished his rights and should never be allowed out of extreme confinement. That's my humble opinion. Peace in Our Quest for Truth

Thank you all for your comments on this..
It is indeed a sickness and terribly sad when anyone is consumed by so much hate..so much prejudice..that they take the life/lives of innocent people..

Bob Herbert: The Way We Are

The bullet that killed the security guard at the Holocaust museum was a reminder of the continuing menace of bigotry that pervades this country.
