Villagers, many straight from their farms, and armed with machetes, sticks and axes, are shouting and crowding round in a big group in Kenya's fertile Kisii district.

"I can't see clearly what is going on, but heavy smoke is rising from the ground and a horrible stench fills the air.

More people are streaming up the hill, some of them with firewood and maize stalks.

Suddenly an old woman breaks from the crowd, screaming for mercy. Three or four people go after her, beat her and drag her back, pushing her onto - what I can now see - is a raging fire.

Burned alive

I was witnessing a horrific practice which appears to be on the increase in Kenya - the lynching of people accused of being witches.

I personally saw the burning alive of five elderly men and women in Itii village."

Ignorance can be quite terrifying, once set into action - hence our need to educate and inform ourselves and others about superstitious nonsense, be it "witchcraft", "creationism", "crusades", etc.

This is horrorfying,It shows we are not as humans learning from any of the past. yes education is a must, but who would volunteer, when the teachers would also be accussed of witchcraft. It sounds as though, the young kenyans need discipline and help. I cried reading this. I am so tired of death, everywhere, We need to help but we need to be accepted first. mostly as Humans, not even as a country. so sad..

Just out of curiosity,is this more of the work of Sara Palin's 'old' priest/minister who made his reputation and following by hunting witches and calling down Gods favor on her to win elections? I am not sure just why I would associate any intolerant right-wing Christian Republican with religion based violence, other than maybe Dr. Tiller's assassination in his church,or any of the other doctor assassinations, or clinic bombings, or acid throwings. Naw, it is probably just me jumping to conclusions.

wow Loyd, You sound angry, Personally I am a part of eye on palin, As a Demcrat ,I find this an odd comment? can you explain further? killing is killing. whether its the "so-called" witches, or the abortion dr. even the pro-life people distanced themselves immediately from that, abortion in the third term is not something I personally agree w/ but I also do not agree on killing the HUMAN doing it. If anything look at the women going, most were probably to scared and held off. not an excuse, but a reason. My aunt did that about 25 years ago, it was bad, but she had a versonal reason, None that I will disguss.. But it was a choice she had no other..I think if we are talking about Kenya, this has nothing to do w/ abortion, save that for another area.
And Melissa, I hope and pray you are not near this, Its like the holocuast each group of people said "well, as long as its not me, Ive nothing to worry about" they didnt help, but I am sure they would have knowing what hitler kept doing. He died a cowards death, and did you know, all he really wanted out of his life from the start was to play baseball, Can you even imagine a world where he did, WOW. Just stay safe,People need to be educated so much more...

Terrible! As a kid, you read about these things happening in history books, then find out later that such barbarism as witch burning, whipping, mutilation, stoning and beheading are still going on in other "uncivilized" countries. Then we learn that American waterboarding and other forms of torture are going on right under our noses. The concept of a "thin veneer of civilization" is sadly true. Thanks Dee.
