"But when the knock on the door came it was a policeman with the news that Darrell Sheens had driven his car into the path of an on-coming train.

Lucy, aged 40, from Norfolk, knew Darrell was depressed, he had sought help from his GP in the weeks before his death.

But she said there were no indications that this depression was going to result in him taking his life four years ago.

"Every time he hit a low, I was able to get him up again," she said.

"Then it got to a point where he could not cope any more and was getting panic attacks. An ambulance man came out and we managed to calm him down."

This is incredibly sad and happens way more than it should. Depression is a serious disease not insanity! It is a true chemical imblance in the brain. Not made up. True depression can not be talked out, it must be intensively treated or suicide in any form slow or fast is inevitable.
Thanks Dee

Thank you, Dee. Bless this courageous woman for opening up and bringing her experience to the public. As more and more people become aware of the signs of depression and possible oncoming suicide they will be better able to cope and get help for the person concerned - or even for themselves. One of the best books I have ever read about depression is Philippe Labro's "Tomber Sept fois, se Relever Huit" ("fall down seven times, get up eight.") I don't know if it has been published in other languages than in French, but it is certainly very good.

How sad we still act as though suicide is a family secret, never to be talked about. Hello??? This is why we are where we are with it. I never have forgotten, our towns police chiefs son. I saw him the evening before, he decided to shoot himself. I still wonder, what did I miss? Could I have said anything to keep him from doing this? No,,, because I had no idea. Glad this strong woman is bringing this too light.

Tragic and so unnecessary... some people are sometimes to ashamed to speak about the way they feel, especially when men find ou that they are depression... Some feel that the cannot share and hold everything in... Sadly the cosnequences are not good..

Depression and suicide are more prevelent than people think it is. No one can understand unless you have been there and walked in their shoes. Can you imagine depression, anxiety, agoraphobia, paranoia, helplessness, shame and no confidence all rolled into one package?

my best friend killed herself after trying multiple medications over a long period of time. i hope this woman doesn't feel too guilty that she wasn't able to convince him to take meds.

Depression is real, unfortunately alot of the pharmaceutical don't help &/or make it worse in specific age groups. Counseling does help to a degree. St Johns Wort has helped a few people I know, BUT you have to take it before the depression reaches a "clinical" stage. Once it reaches a clinical stage a prescription is usually the only thing strong enough to reverse the chemical imbalance back to its normal state/ One misconception is that once a depressed person is better, they are cured. This is sooo untrue. Once an individual has depression, it is most likely the depression will return at some point. The thing is to be able to recognize when the depression first begins & get treatment immediately. It takes less time to reverse the imbalance & is much less disruptive to your life, when you seek treatment as soon as you realize you or your loved one is depressed. DEPRESSION IS A DISEASE, A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE WITHIN THE BRAIN. JUST LIKE CANCER, & DIABETES, & BRITTLE BONE SYNDROME, DEPRESSION IS A DISEASE..It really annoys me that there is such a negative connotation with treatment of the disease known as depression. If the negativity was taken away there would be less suicides related to depression.

I happily take my anti depressant, as although I have never had suicidal tendencies, I lost any interest in life before taking them.
