"To stop the disease from spreading Sparrow had a stem cell transplant.

The procedure was a success but his fight is far from over.

In some ways it was like a vacation. Ten weeks in Chicago with a few famous stops along the way.

"We got to see Barack Obama's house, Muhammad Ali's house, Oprah's house," said Sparrow.

Those were the highlights. Sparrow spent most of his trip in a hospital bed.

"We had some rough days but we got through them,” said Sparrow.

A local boy battling a rare disease recently underwent a stem cell transplant. The procedure was a success, but his fight is far from over.

From what I have been reading about stem cell research is that it will get more affordable as they have discovered methods of creating them within hours of a blood draw from a patient and then reintroducing them (which sidesteps any chance of rejection) into the person. Future looks bright in this area and also I am hoping it will decrease the "need" for animal subjects, if not eradicating them altogether.
He is a brave young man (tho chemo part of the treatment was surprising to me) and I hope the simple pleasure of riding a bike will be his.
