Myths about depression have led to the person being isolated and unloved, even by their own families. Myths about all illnesses need to be brought into the open and show that they have no place in modern society.

The stigma on depression is horrible. No body gets it until they have been through it. This is a disease or chemical imblance of the brains of some or a lack of chemicals. It is a Medical condition not something made up and you can't tell someone to "just get over it"!!!! It is not that kind of thing at all. Education needed!

I have suffered from depression for over 40 years and I can become very defensive when people who are ignorant about it toss out their opinions. It is improving slowly but more education is greatly needed.

One of the things that many depressives do to compensate, is to give an outward appearance of overly happy go lucky person. Many of these people feel the need to "keep up appearances" so to speak, because of society telling them to just buck up, or smile it can't be that bad. People need to look beyond the outward fascade of others, and see below the surface, to the real person underneath.

After a trumatic divorce and custody battle over my then 14 year old daughter and then the death of my Mother and 2 years later witnessing the death of my Father, I sunk into the worst depression of my life. My family hasn't understood why I can't just 'snap out of it" and 'stop being so negative"...seeking help has been made more difficult due to not having health insurance. So I'm just suppose to rely on prayer and self help guides in order to somehow find my way back to the somewhat normal life I had several years ago???? People have so many missguided, preconceived ideas of what depression really is. More education is needed...and help is needed for people without the financial means to get the help they need to recover from what feels like a weight holding people down like an anchor.
