The apparently pampered pooches on display at the international dog show at Gurgaon were being subjected to cruelty, an international animal rights protection group has alleged.

The International Organisation for Animal Protection (OIPA) filed a police complaint on Thursday against the organizers of the show Gurgaon Kennel Club charging that various sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 along with the bye-laws of the Haryana Municipal Corporation were violated during the show.

Neither the performing animals were registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) nor the necessary certificate from AWBI was obtained for transporting them, the OIPA alleged.

It was also claimed that "mother feeding pups" were put on sale by the organisers in violation of the law.

"Participants from various countries came with different breeds of dogs to attend the show. Most of the dogs did not go through quarantine test. They were not vaccinated. Even the Gurgaon civic authorities did not bother to register the animals and ensure that the canines were sterilised," said Naresh Kadyan, India representative of OIPA.

Rubbishing the allegations, the Gurgaon Kennel Club said, "No puppy was sold during the show. No animal can enter the country without a quarantine test. It was in fact an exhilarating experience for animal lovers. The charges are all baseless."

I strongly condemn dog shows. Animals are not here for our fun, or to enrich us. Can't wait for the day when aliens descend and use us in 'factory farms', show casing us like so much toys. I think mankind has to be subjected to the same ignominy as animals before they will ever see the light. Thanks for this post.
