The article says"Among the 126 American medical schools, 11 still sacrifice animals for teaching, according to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, an advocacy group that tracks the practice. Other than Case, none of them use dogs."

What "other animals" are sacrificed and why are they deemed less significant than dogs?

In the late 60's and early 70's, my alma mater was 'outed' for just this sosrt of thing. It hit the papers because owners of several (purebred) large dogs that had gone missing got an anonymous lead and basically burst into the area where the animals were kept(one dog, a great dane, had had a leg amputated - for practice). There was a big stink , then the university had the media come in to see the changes that they had made(kennels on the roof...) but dogs and other animals) continued to disappear by breed: Samoyeds one month, large cats another....Everyone knew where they would end up. The universities got together and agreed to only BUY dogs from registered "producers" as they did for others animals like rats.
Bottom line, it did not stop the vivisection. Some of us refused to participate in a lab that involved dissecting a cat picked from a great drum full of dead cats in formaldehyde! We were nearly expelled, but they reversed their decision because of similar cases in the news and even movies from the US. It is obviously still going on everywhere!! It will require laws to realy end it and even then...
