Toxic algal blooms can alter shark brains, making them hyperexcited and in some cases, killing the animals, new research shows.Toxins produced by red tide events can alter shark brains, resulting in "hyperexcitability" and even death...

A very concerning story of how pollution can have detrimental impacts on the environment far beyond the initial contamination, and far outside expected results.

There are very few toxins as strong as algae toxins.

thanx for interesting article.

1 more example of the consequences of environment contamination due to human activities:
The Brittany coast suffer from several years of pollution from agricultural fertilizers and certain urban and industrial discharges, responsible for the proliferation of green algae.
their deadly toxins has killed humans, horses, dogs...

Noted. I love sharks, they are powerful and amazing predators, they deserve the best chances to survive.

If it wasn't enough to have their fins cut off and thrown back into the water to die, now this.

Sharks are reviled just as wolves are when it is man who is the most dangerous predator. I didn't know how toxic algae can be although it shouldn't have surprised me with all the pollution we dump in our oceans and rivers.

The only way is to go totally vegan. THis is so bad....sharks are known for being almost indestructible so this must be powerful toxic stuff.Thank you for sharing!

I agree with Michael Cozens. Why other species must die because of our mistakes is beyond me.

This is so sad! Humans just keep on finding ways to wreak havoc on our planet! The Red Tide is a terible thing and if it is doing this to sharks what is it doing to weaker sea creatures. Humans have no regard for what they kill. If they can't see it they feel they are not responsible. They need some lessons in Responsibility for what they do to this Planet!!!!

Very cool. I signed up for Discovery News. Red algae preys on the fish that it kills. What causes red algae?
