This surgery is very promising and can give hope to so many more parents to be. It also offers these children a more complete and normal life - how much more exciting can it get?!

Well it is great medical technology. I hate to be a downer about this awesome surgery though. What if you are on social security disability for an income as you have a condition that does not allow you to work. Your health insurance is medicare or one of medicare's so called "private" healthcare plans who still must abide by medicare stipulations. You will never be permitted to get this kind of help and have your medicare insurance pay for it. So again, the wealthier folks who can pay out of pocket have access to this great surgery and the rest will not. How sad. But good luck to those of you that go all out to try and help your child even before birth.

It is certainly good news for those with the worst cases. Too bad we can't spend as much time and money on finding ways to prevent it.

Spina Bifida is prevented by taking folic acid when you start trying to get pregnant.

Norm - The prevention is relatively simple. I believe spina bifida is caused by a lack of folic acid in early pregnancy. My friend had this surgery done on her baby at Vanderbilt ( her boy is now 12 I think ) It certainly isn't a cure, he still has many, many medical issues and problems, but it did improve his chances for a good quality of life.

Prevention is simple, but a cure is a wonderful alternative.
