Nothing good comes from war.bringing people to there knees ,until they give upand lose all hope of life-This is considered a victory.Like it says in the bible,Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be the children of God.

Excellent Opt Ed..Thanks for finding it Kat.. It's so true it makes one wonder why! Why "We" elect leaders who, inevitably, vote war! When all is said and done it's up to the "We" in this equation to set the record straight!

I have just recently watched a documentary about the World War 1, and 2 and desert storm, and Irag and Afgaistan people who have been in War.It is such a horrible thing that they have to live with each day. Some say that they don't understand why they survived and other's didn't. I don't know how I would feel if I survived and alot of my friends didn't. They are torn between two worlds. Some never make it back to live an good life, even though they returned and alot of them are hurt and don't get help even from their own Govt. I HOPE TO GOD NOBODY ELSE EVER HAS TO SERVE IN A WAR EVER AGIAN, BUT, THAT WOULD BE AN UNREALISTIC DREAM OF ME TO HAVE WOULDN'T IT???

The main problem with modern war is that the individuals responsible for starting and orchestrating it do not have to actually fight. Nor do those who profit from the war--they do not fight and they are far from the dangers that affect noncombatants in a war zone as well. If the individuals who begin and orchestrate wars and the individuals who profit by them all had to fight or at least to live in a war zone, you would see a drastic reduction in war and a speedy resolution to existing hostilities. In ancient Celtic societies a leader could not declare war unless he were going to fight it-- a king who did not lead his troops would have had a short reign. Native American leaders led their own men into battle as long as they were physically capable of doing so--and even when war was thrust upon them considered at all times the welfare of their noncombatants. Hold modern leaders to the same standards and we have at peace so fast it would make your head swim.

This is a good post, Kat. PLEASE Read this with care. The premise is good and the conclusions drawn are certainly in line with reality BUT- but this is a very oversimplified account of the wars and is also described according to the author's viewpoint. Notice that there are no citations, no sources listed for the author's contentions. The author does not know all of this from first-hand experience, but gives no credit for others' work; and the reasons for why things happened are massively simplified (Germans lost because their farmers were at the front) when most things in human history are rarely so simple. I'm not disagreeing with the idea that we don't have a track record of 'winning' all the wars, but I am cautioning people to think about how they accept what they read on the internet without question.

For example, we were attacked by Al Quaeda, which was the military wing of the Afghan Taliban government. It made sense to attack them and to destroy them, for many reasons (including future protection for our homeland). But Bush/Cheney completely bungled getting Bin Laden and his top guys entirely. They got some very replaceable low-level guys and we're still dealing with the incredible messes Bush left there. It is possible to argue that if we leave an unstable Afghanistan, we'll have the same troubles all over again just like we did in 2001 when Reagan's Afghan mess came back to bite us but good.

The Iraq war had tons and tons of support in the US. Most Americans didn't bother to read anything about foreign policy or the middle east or Iraq/Iran and the US history there, or to learn anything about why claims that Saddam would help Bin Laden were almost certainly hooey. Ignorance is a very dangerous thing. Many believe that war was started for oil or for revenge on Saddam for his attempt (alleged) on Bush Sr. years before. But that is vastly oversimplified (like this article). An easy victory would ensure Bush's reelection; the war profiteers wouldn't make enough money off Afghanistan; the industrial-military complex needed a bigger war too; the military contractors (like Blackwater) wanted access to more money and more Arabs/Muslims; the Republicans benefited directly from the scare tactics when frightened Americans supported their policies out of fear; the Republicans benefited directly in campaign contributions because they (back then) had the reputation of being the party of national security and the military (not true, but too many vote their perceptions instead of doing the work to get the facts); and being victorious makes every one feel good about being American and could lock up a Republican majority for decades (they hoped).

Not just oil and not just revenge on Saddam. And never based on any intelligence at all (this was never an honest mistake).

The author whose work is posted here has a great point to make, but it is his opinion - and only his opinion - until he supports it with facts that rise above the over-simplifications he uses here. Those work in grade school, but not for informed and discerning adults dealing with something as complex and deadly and expensive as war. He seems to say it's OK to leave Afghanistan without a WWII style victory because we've done it that way more often than not. I'm OK on leaving without the WWII style victory (that was never going to happen) but not with leaving it to fester again into another massive attack on western civilians.

Barbara W., Debra R., and Deborah O. all make very cogent and thoughtful comments. Nice work!

Very interesting article. I'm forwarding it to my politically active friends. It may be oversimplified but a good read none-the-less. I also appreciated JennyLynn's view. My opinion is pretty simple as well.. Seems to me it's all about money. (Well maybe not ALL, just mostly anyway.) Thanks Kat.

The trouble with this is that if you cannot express yourself you just start a war!!!!!!!!!!!
