Oh, I pray that Leonard is pardoned. At the very least, I hope his case is re-examined for corruption !

It is a beautiful letter. Thanks, Kat.

Not once did Leonard Peltier ask Obama to examine his case or release him. Rather, he spoke about the injustice of the system toward his people, blacks and other minorities. Peltier is a great man with great wisdom. It is heartbreaking he has spent his adult life in prison for a crime he did not commit, but he has not wasted this time. The movement has continued on his behalf and grown. I sincerely hope Obama does the right thing and releases this man soon.

Thank you Kat.

This man's soul is blessed. What a wonderfully written letter Leonard wrote. I am proud of him. Hopefully the President elect will pardon him and see the injustice that was done to him and many more like him.

Bless you Kat for this article, so glad to know this! Totally noted. My thanks to Charles M. for the forward also.

Walk in peace all,

Bush pardoned John Forte, but not Pelteir.

Why?

This deserves repeating:

Ukumbwa Sauti, M.Ed. said...

Thank you, Leonard, for you constant presence of clarity and power in the face of the oppression that continues, seemingly unabated, even in the face of the first president of the United States of America that shares African ancestry.

It is important, this symbolism that Obama represents, but it is more important that we, not only use that symbolism to inspire us to greater action and clearer thinking and discourse, but that, if it is possible, Barack Obama is held to the responsibility of the political and spiritual legacy from which he has been born and in which he is being held.

We should wait for no president, especially one of the United States of America, to do for us what we are to do for ourselves. But we must utilize his position and any positive moves he makes for the ultimate liberation of the human spirit and mind and body, beyond all limitations of state and non-natural law.

If Leonard Peltier is not free, none of us is free. If we stand outside his bars of incarceration and can clearly see him there, we are no more free for our ability to move about this yet colonially held land and spiritually-imprisoned earth mother. We lack the clarity of our own place upon this sacred earth.

Unluckily, and I hope this is not true, Obama may serve to be more of an intoxicating force, diverting our attentions from real work and real clarity and knowledge that was required before his appointment and will be required during and after. His symbolic presence is important and historical, but his actions are yet to be realized in the context of the most powerful force in human development, that of indigeny, the thought and practice of indigenous people worldwide, that which must be empowered and returned to.

May we be guided by the prophecy of the eagle and the condor. May we yet stand next to brother Leonard as we look back someday - soon - at the bars that once held him back from our physical embrace. May our footprints mingle softly on mother earth together with his as we watch the walls of injustice and spiritual and intellectual incarceration crumble, destroyed by the empowerment of indigeny and the functional support of people worldwide.

On to an empowered and unified indigeny.

Ukumbwa Sauti

Mr Peletier's name came up for pardon during the last of the Clinton years and the FBI demonstrated in the streets outside the Whitehouse against it. I doubt whether Obama will buck the FBI either.

I'm hoping he will get freedom soon he should have been many year's ago. From what I hear and read he should have never went to prison in the first place. He will get his freedom. Blessings to Leonard. Thanks Kat

No Joy he should never have gone to prison. Many of the key witnesses, including a mentally challenged woman, were coerced into falsly testifying against him.

The US does not have any political prisoners and does not squash minority rights.. Only countries with dictators and despots do, like Communist China, Russia, and um... the USA....

Perhaps this beautiful letter will enable Obama to realize that there are indigenous people that have been discriminated against since the White man set foot on this great country, long before the discriminations against the Black man. I will continue to pray for his timely release.

Me too...There are better ways to get a point across Wigga! Kat, thank you for this post-I've hoped this man would be released for many years and you made me realize this new administration may have it in them to do just that. You made my day! Star coming your way. :)

Wigga, I suggest you do some thorough research of actual history written by respected and knowledged sources. Your "facts" are indeed NOT the truth. Start with the book "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James W. Loewen and then check out his newest version AND the sources he uses.
Folks, I too report profane nastiness~

Wow, more and more ignorance in here everyday it seems like. If you want to know history, read some books, I suggest starting with the one Kathleen stated, then you can follow that up with the biography o Mary Ellen Crowdog, who speaks in depth of Peliter's case, and then try a google search of Anna Mae Aquash, and I am almost certain that Black Elk has also covered the supposed "facts" and the real facts o the Peltier trial in one of his books.

I hope Leonard will be pardoned and exonerated! How sad that he has been wrongfully imprisoned for over 30 years! I hope Obama will be the one to get to the bottom of this and expose those responsible for this atrocity to Leonard and SET HIM FREE! What a eloquent letter Mr. Peltier wrote!

It seems that the people who use profanities and ignorance on this Care2 site are the ones who always hide behind the frog avatar and never have any friends...you do not always have to agree...but don't be a coward and hide behind frogs..and the use of profanity adds nothing to your case but only reflects to me that you are disrespectful and most people I know tune out disrespectful people no matter how good an opinion they may have.

Leonard Peltier has been my hero since I was a teenager many years ago. And in his struggle to survive in his situation he ask for nothing for himself, but instead for our children in future. He is a man of honor and grace. He worries for our children, for ALL our children.

Kudos to all that reported "Wigga N.". Unfortunately your posting to a person that has no connection to the human reality of struggle. Tis the troll who uses many names including my own in many forms and combinations. This person is person of mix race themselves, and they will attack their own at the drop of a hat. Facts do not matter to them..just the arguments they can manage to create. No fear of anything so they come and go as they please, and they will continue to do so at will. They will bother those who argue with them as it gives them a thrill to see how much chaos they can inspire and bitterness they can instill in all they can engage an irritate.
