Kat I think it took so long for things to move along as it wasn't a high priority to some...you know the old saying "it's only Indians killing Indians". You know how it is out there today and particularly back then she was just another dead Indian...so what. It is sad the thinking but that is the hate, prejudice and disrespect still given towards the Native Americans in this Country..there is a long way to go.

It looks like they thought she was an informant.

I have been to her Nova Scotia reservation in Pictou. It is on the north side of the Island (or near island) and is protected from the sea.

The band there is very poor and Pictou is not sympathetic to their plight.

I think it is exceedingly important to try to eliminate violence from rebellion. It has been well proved that all kinds of non-violent strategies succeed, such as the boycott of South Africa.

About two years ago I defined empathy as a revolutionary strategy in my paper "Empathy", and showed how it works and its scientific roots.

I have a group here inspired by my work, Radical Empathy, and I have been trying to morph it into a "research action" group called Empathy Action

This is so sad all these years and he took her life a beautiful young lady begging him, he is heartless, He needs to let the family have him and let them do what they want. Perhaps the same for she did not deserve to die like this. Raping her 4 of them is bad enough but then kill her as she is begging!!! yes this one deserve's the same. I may seem harsh but, I speack as I see her. Thanks Kat

I believe Anna Mae was murdered for what she was trying to do & NOT for anything she said. She was trying to stop the government from drilling for uranium on the reservation. There are so many oddities connected to her case. One being that federal officials, who knew who Anna was & what she looked like claimed they could not identify her, so they took very unnecessary measures, which violated her way of life, to identify her. Now for those of you who would say it was over 2 months from her death til she was found. All I can say is it was Dec-Feb. Have you ever been in the Badlands during winter? A body does NOT decompose at sub-zero temps. Also, the "official" cause of death was exposure to the weather. However as Anna Mae's family was preparing her for ceremony, they found the bullet hole at the base of her skull. Thus ruling out the exposure theory. I do not believe for one fraction of a second that Anna Mae was an informant. All she did was try to protect her people, her family & friends. For as long as I live I will continue to believe that is why she was murdered. The government use Natives to do their dirty work. As for the media coverage, well it is pretty twisted for the most part. The media only tells what they think people should know. It takes a good bit of digging to get to the whole truth about anything these days. Thanks goodness there is finally some justice for Anna Mae's family & friends. My hope is that Anna Mae's spirit forever lives in the minds & hearts of those she has touched, in life as well as after she passed over. I hope all who read this realize that she had a vibrant spirit, was warm & loving, & did what she could to help others, & to protect her people & that is why she no longer walks this earth. I know in my heart that she looks down upon & guides her children & friends. I never knew Anna Mae in life, but she has touched my life. Long Live the Spirit of Anna Mae.

Kudos to Kat for this article. Long live the spirit of Anna Mae. May we never forget that the fight lives on for Justice, through such brave souls like her. Shame on those of both races who were complicant in this crime and subsequent cover-up.
. I had taken my children through Rosebud and Wounded Knee so they could get a feel of their Indian Heritage inherited from me. I remember that throughout the summer of 1980, there still existed a white-man's Dusk to Dawn Curfew.Tension was high in the air.

My maternal great grandmother was Lakota Sioux( white name Annie) and a medicine Woman who'd married an ex-slave, my maternal great grandfather named Mead Griffith, in the early 1870's and was rescued from what would later happen to her relatives, my Ancestors. She was so intimidated by the overall rascism of the day that even in the 1910 US. Census, she's listed as Black, not Native.
This strikes a personal chord with me because the deceipt and duplicity of some individuals within our First Nations whom, in helping out the "Waschicos"(White eyes"), have always put those at risk, who dared to speak and work through their deeds, for truth and fair play.
Love and Peace in Our Quest For Truth
PS. I've taken the liberty of posting this to my Facebook Profile with reverence, honour and pride for my mixed Heritage.

(Memorial Song)

Oyate kinhan kawitaya au yunkan,
tuwela seca k'un hel opa sni yelo.
Nita kola heyape lo.

When people come to a celebration,
someone is not among them.
Your friends have said so.

"Anna Mae Pictou was born March 27, 1945 in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia.
This old Lakota memorial song honors her life as a warrior woman.
There are other songs to be sung, but this song
is for her. Today"...Arthur Short Bull
