Don't let fracking get a foothold in NC. Two GOP legislators are introducing bills to make it legal, offering energy choices only between two evils- frack sooner or frack later. We need REAL clean energy options on the table not more big oil influence.

Yes, John, apparently NC does have a deposit. In the Piedmont (central) area and most populated area of the state where my ancestry comes from.

The most disturbing thing about his to me is that I rec'd in the mail several months ago a report by the NC Coastal Federation about the headway NC was making, especially on the coastal area - where I live now- in producing wind power offshore and inland.
Also there's a very small company started by a chemistry professor on an island near Wilmington using algae and wastewater to make biofuel (Alganomics).
In the wide open eastern farmland, not far from the Coast, near the Great Dismal Swamp, the Northeast Project was (at least at the time of publication) in the works, with a 300-megawatt facility wind farm planned. The report by Jan DeBlieu says the project would "pump $750 million into the local economy" and farmers would receive about 6,000 a year for the lease of their land and still be able to farm right up to the windmill structures. -- the electricity produced would be enough to power 55,000 to 75,000 homes.

Also our offshore area has the best wind on the east coast, and a company from VA, Apex Wind Energy, was planning to build an offshore wind farm in an area near Onslow County -- ready to go, and the US military stopped it because it was close to camp LeJeune. However, NC's offshore has, according to research, 500 available spaces for windmill farms that would not infringe on military or wildlife issues.

An industry monopoly allowed in NC, and not in some other states, is discouraging individual or community development of wind or solar power. Duke Energy, rather than a third party, is generating solar power and controls its distribution. And individuals who generate their own power get a very low amount for power sold back to the gird, making it more difficult for individuals to afford the set-up costs.

Paul Quinlan of the NC Sustainable Energy says we need a bill introduced that would "legalize third-party electric sales for renewable energy projects of less than 2MW that are built on the customer's property," and one that "would lock in a fairer price structure for private contractors."

After I do some checking with these sources for updates, I will be asking NC to do just that instead of diverting attention away from these promising projects with "drill baby drill" mentality.
