A Chevron refinery near San Francisco has exploded a mushroom cloud of toxic smoke over the East Bay. It's not the first time. And a large angry crowd says it had better be the last. Air quality tests are deceptive, disregarding synergistic effects.

Thank you Susan...You do such outstanding petitions.

In reading the newspaper this morning they had an article on this even though I heard about it yesterday, but gas prices already at 3.89 for regular in San Diego will be going up because of this disaster! SIGNED HUN!

Leave it to big oil to punish us for their mistakes - punish us in every way possible.

I do hope the divestment movement McKibben suggests will take off and take this business out of business forever. At the least a carbon tax and pollution tax should be imposed.

Has anyone else that lives in N. California that everyone increased prices of gasoline immediately after the fire/explosions at the Chevron Plant?

Noted and signed. Thanks Susan. I also think they should compensate all the firefighters, police, and anyone else who helped put out the fire. Safety measures should have been taken long before now, and they should be fined for not being up-to-date.

Thanks, Susan. Signed, shared and noted. This disaster gives Chevron yet another excuse to externalize loses (their failure/refusal to maintain the plant better) and internalize profits (raising the price of gasoline). A previous explosion and fire at this refinery in March, 1999 sent hundreds of people to the hospital, and there have apparently been a number of smaller "accidents."

Thank you all so much for signing and your comments!!

Kate, I agree, they don't care about the damage. Their bottom line is profit, and as I understand it, they can be sued by their investors/shareholders if they don't make as high a profit as they "legally"can. The problem is corporate personhood.

We really do need to look at where our 401s and other savings are being invested. We should, I believe, urge all those who do invest or have stock in fossil-fuel companies to DIVEST - and join McKibben's movement.

Also we must DEMAND the fossil-fuel industry's profits (not our pockets) be taxed enough to pay for the damage caused by the carbon they release and the explosions and spills they allow and demand that our gas prices not be raised to compensate them.

Of course, as long as Citizens United lets corporations decide who runs and gets into office, we have to work to repeal that - demand elections where everyone has the same amount of money for his/her campaign - and vote with our dollar. We can boycott Chevron. We can bike, and honestly, some of use CAN do what the African American community bravely did in the 60s -- we can walk or bike to work and tell Chevron and its buddies to stick it.

I personally am trying to educate my representatives about the dangers of fracking - about the risks to the environment of burning and bringing out the fuels remaining in the ground, and about the need and ability to develop wind, solar and water powered energy. Dr. Mark Jacobson of Stanford was kind enough to send me a link to his papers on how this can be done by 2030, if you'd like to read the info:
http://www.stanford.edu/group/efmh/jacobson/Articles/I/susenergy2030.html

McKibben's article is found in Rolling Stone. The link to my petition on divestment is in my comment above.

Jason R I definitely agree wealth should be taxed back to what it was taxed in the 50s - 91% -- I believe that's at least one way of closing up the growing gap between rich and poor and healing the ills caused by economic inequality. And taxes on those making below 200,000 a year (10 times what I and a lot of others eek by on) should be reduced incrementally - with no one earning less than 40000 paying ANY taxes at all.

That 91% tax on wealthy earnings a half century ago didn't kill anyone - after all, we had the money to go to the moon - and it won't kill anyone now - it will save many lives and the planet if used properly.

''SIGNED''....thanks Susan....Chevron and all big oil companies need to be BAN from ever drilling for oil. There have been TOO many oil spills and fires. And this will never end if they are NOT STOPPED. They are destroying the environment, animals and people. And taking a toll on everything and everybody. They must be STOPPED, NOW. TOO MUCH GREED!!!!

A few weeks ago, there was a report on the news about how gas prices were lower considering the time of year. When I heard that, I said "I feel a refinery fire coming on". It's like clockwork.

It's seems like they don't care if they have a refinery fire, because then they have yet another reason to raise gas prices! Not caring who gets hurt in the process.
