Tens of thousands of elephants are slaughtered every year for their ivory and Hong Kong can do something important to help stop this evil trade. We were horrified to discover that there have been six seizures of smuggled ivory this year alone,

Why this is important

A message from the petition organisers, Lucy Lan Skrine (柯嵐), aged 11, and Christina Seigrist (孫藍慧), aged 8, who both live and go to school in Hong Kong.

ďTens of thousands of elephants are slaughtered every year for their ivory and Hong Kong can do something important to help stop this evil trade. We were horrified to discover that there have been six seizures of smuggled ivory this year alone, and that the Hong Kong government has a stockpile of 12 tonnes of ivory collected in the past three years alone. The total stockpile could be as big as 25 tonnes.

It is absolutely necessary for China to act and make her policy known to the world. It is not only about the $, but China must show the world that being an economical power also involves other responsibilities, like the burden of responsibility!

It gives one hope for the human race to see young people take action like this. Well done you two. Too bad the adult world abounds with uncaring greedy individuals and nations. Hopefully they can be moved to consider the consequences of their actions by petitions like this and get them to change their views and support endeavours like this. Keep up the great work Lucy and Christina.

We must do something. Itís our responsibility. Elephants are being driven to the brink of extinction by the ivory trade. If we donít act, they could be extinct within our lifetimes!
