PETA Refuses to Close Pet Shelter of Horrors, Kills 89.4 Percent of Adoptable Dogs and Cats in its Care During 2012
Hypocritical Animal Rights Group Brings Death Toll to 29,398

Washington, D.C. – Today the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) released its yearly report on People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) shameful animal care record at its so-called pet shelter in its Norfolk, VA headquarters. New records show PETA killed a staggering 89.4 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2012. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the notorious animal rights group has continued killing adoptable dogs and cats at an average of over 30 pets per week.

According to records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 1,647 cats and dogs last year while placing just 19 in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 29,398 pets have died at the hands of PETA workers.

“For the 14th year in a row, PETA leaders have shown yet again they don’t care about the unlucky dogs and cats that come to its shelter for help,” said J. Justin Wilson, CCF Senior Research Analyst. “The animal rights group is talking out of both sides of its mouth – on one side preaching its animal liberation agenda, while on the other signing the death warrant of over 89 percent of pets in its care. It’s beyond hypocritical.”

Despite its $36 million budget, PETA employees make little effort to find homes for the thousands of animals they kill every year. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk previously indicated to The Virginian-Pilot that the animal rights group could stop killing pets, but it would mean cutting down on press stunts and celebrity photo shoots: “We could become a no-kill shelter immediately. It means we wouldn't do as much work."

“It seems PETA is more dedicated to publicity stunts than to keeping the animals in its own care alive,” Wilson continued. “It’s the height of hypocrisy for PETA to demonstrate for the ‘rights’ of rats and pigs, while killing tens of thousands of pets. It’s time that the Commonwealth of Virginia finally reclassifies PETA’s pet shelter for what it is – a slaughterhouse.”

At, CCF has made public PETA’s “Animal Record” filings with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for every year since 1998.

Things You Didn’t Know About the Center for Consumer Freedom and Richard Berman

A front for corporate interests

The so-called Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), founded by Washington lobbyist Richard Berman and his firm Berman & Co., is an industry front for tobacco, alcohol, and agribusiness interests. The group’s stock-in-trade involves malicious attacks on organizations that promote food safety, public health, or animal welfare.

It was started with a $600,000 grant from tobacco giant Phillip Morris. In the pay and in the pocket of corporate special interests that profit from animal cruelty, CCF has always sought to thwart The HSUS’s work to combat factory farming, puppy mills, the Canadian seal slaughter, commercial whaling, and other large-scale cruelties. Among other targets, CCF has also attacked Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for their anti-drunk driving and public health campaigns.

Cher C (1430)

PETA is a frequent target of CCF advertising and publicity.[22] The Center for Consumer Freedom is publisher of the website,[23] which alleges People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals unnecessarily euthanizes animals in its care.[24]

The CCF runs, a website that states it "provides the public and media with in-depth profiles of anti-consumer activist groups, along with information about the sources of what is called their exorbitant funding."[25] The site features generally negative profiles of various groups it believes oppose consumer freedom, such as Greenpeace, PETA and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. It also hosts "biographies" offering negative portrayals of key activists and celebrity supporters for various groups. The site reports what it states are links between profiled groups and extremism, and argues, in general, that the groups profiled hold extreme views that are contrary to the public interest. It states to have examined 500,000 IRS documents in its profiling, listing for each group major donors, income and expenditure, key supporters and connections with other groups.

The CCF operates a number of other websites aside from its own, including,,,, and and contain a mercury calculator that offers an alternative calculation of amount of a fish that can be eaten before getting an unsafe dose of mercury, calculated as ten times the reference dose recommended by the EPA.

The CCF has also claimed (counter to research findings) that dieting and meal tracking do not lead to weight loss,[26] and it has been a critic of United Auto Workers,[27] and the American Federation of Teachers,[28] among others.

Who is Richard Berman?

Richard Berman is a Washington, D.C.-based hired gun who uses front groups to defend his corporate clients against the public interest. Using his lobbying and consulting firm, Berman and Company, as a revenue vehicle for his activities, Berman runs at least 23 industry-funded projects, such as the Center for Union Facts, and holds 24 "positions" within these various entities.

"7 Things You Didn’t Know About PETA

1) According to government documents, PETA employees have killed more than 19,200 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens since 1998. This behavior continues despite PETA’s moralizing about the “unethical” treatment of animals by farmers, scientists, restaurant owners, circuses, hunters, fishermen, zookeepers, and countless other Americans. PETA puts to death over 90 percent of the animals it accepts from members of the public who expect the group to make a reasonable attempt to find them adoptive homes. PETA holds absolutely no open-adoption shelter hours at its Norfolk, VA headquarters, choosing instead to spend part of its $32 million annual income on a contract with a crematory service to periodically empty hundreds of animal bodies from its large walk-in freezer.

2) PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk has described her group’s overall goal as “total animal liberation.” This means the complete abolition of meat, milk, cheese, eggs, honey, zoos, aquariums, circuses, wool, leather, fur, silk, hunting, fishing, and pet ownership. In a 2003 profile of Newkirk in The New Yorker, author Michael Specter wrote that Newkirk has had at least one seeing-eye dog taken away from its blind owner. PETA is also against all medical research that requires the use of animals, including research aimed at curing AIDS and cancer.

3) PETA has given tens of thousands of dollars to convicted arsonists and other violent criminals. This includes a 2001 donation of $1,500 to the North American Earth Liberation Front (ELF), an FBI-certified “domestic terrorist” group responsible for dozens of firebombs and death threats. During the 1990s, PETA paid $70,200 to Rodney Coronado, an Animal Liberation Front (ALF) serial arsonist convicted of burning down a Michigan State University research laboratory. In his sentencing memorandum, a federal prosecutor implicated PETA president Ingrid Newkirk in that crime. PETA vegetarian campaign coordinator Bruce Friedrich has also told an animal rights convention that “blowing stuff up and smashing windows” is “a great way to bring about animal liberation,” adding, “Hallelujah to the people who are willing to do it.”

4) PETA activists regularly target children as young as six years old with anti-meat and anti-milk propaganda, even waiting outside their schools to intercept them without notifying their parents. One piece of kid-targeted PETA literature tells small children: “Your Mommy Kills Animals!” PETA brags that its messages reach over 1.2 million minor children, including 30,000 kids between the ages of 6 and 12, all contacted by e-mail without parental supervision. One PETA vice president told the Fox News Channel’s audience: “Our campaigns are always geared towards children, and they always will be.”

5) PETA’s president has said that “even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we would be against it.” And PETA has repeatedly attacked research foundations like the March of Dimes, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the American Cancer Society, solely because they support animal-based research aimed at curing life-threatening diseases and birth defects. And PETA helped to start and manage a quasi-medical front group, the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, to attack medical research head-on.

6) PETA has compared Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust to farm animals and Jesus Christ to pigs. PETA’s religious campaigns include a website that claims—despite ample evidence to the contrary—that Jesus Christ was a vegetarian. PETA holds protests at houses of worship, even suing one church that tried to protect its members from Sunday-morning harassment. Its billboards taunt Christians with the message that hogs “died for their sins.” PETA insists, contrary to centuries of rabbinical teaching, that the Jewish ritual of kosher slaughter shouldn’t be allowed. And its infamous “Holocaust on Your Plate” campaign crassly compared the Jewish victims of Nazi genocide to farm animals.

7) PETA frequently looks the other way when its celebrity spokespersons don’t practice what it preaches. As gossip bloggers and Hollywood journalists have noted, Pamela Anderson’s Dodge Viper (auctioned to benefit PETA) had a “luxurious leather interior”; Jenna Jameson was photographed fishing, slurping oysters, and wearing a leather jacket just weeks after launching an anti-leather campaign for PETA; Morrissey got an official “okay” from PETA after eating at a steakhouse; Dita von Teese has written about her love of furs and foie gras; Steve-O built a career out of abusing small animals on film; the officially “anti-fur” Eva Mendes often wears fur anyway; and Charlize Theron’s celebrated October 2007 Vogue cover shoot featured several suede garments. In 2008, “Baby Phat” designer Kimora Lee Simmons became a PETA spokesmodel despite working with fur and leather, after making a $20,000 donation to the animal rights group."

"PETA: “We do not advocate ‘right to life’ for animals”
February 6, 2013 by Nathan J. Winograd

In the last 11 years, PETA has killed 29,426 companion animals. Apologists for PETA’s killing have argued that all of the animals they kill are “unadoptable.” But this claim is a lie for numerous reasons. It is a lie because rescue groups and individuals have come forward stating that the animals they gave PETA were healthy and adoptable and PETA insiders have admitted as much, one former intern reporting that he quit in disgust after witnessing perfectly healthy puppies and kittens in the kill room. It is a lie because PETA refuses to provide its criteria for making the determination as to whether or not an animal is “unadoptable.” It is a lie because according to a state inspector, the PETA facility where the animals are impounded was designed to house animals for no more than 24 hours. It is a lie because Newkirk herself admitted as much during a 2008 television interview: when asked whether or not PETA kills healthy animals, she responded, “Absolutely.” It is a lie because PETA staff have described the animals they have killed as “healthy,” “adoptable,” “adorable” and “perfect.” It is a lie because PETA itself admits it does not believe in “right to life for animals.” And it is a lie because when asked what sort of effort PETA routinely makes to find adoptive homes for animals in its care, PETA responded that it had “no comment.”
Yet despite PETA’s own admissions, there are those who simply refuse to believe it, who claim it never happened (which even PETA does not deny). Here’s your proof:
For the 2012 data, as reported by PETA, to the Virginia Department of Agriculture, click here.
For an Op Ed piece written by Ingrid Newkirk where she writes that PETA supports an automatic destruction policy for all dogs who look like “pit bulls” in shelters, click here.
For a postcard written by Newkirk where she admits PETA does not advocate “right to life for animals,” click here.
For evidence that PETA employees were rounding up animals, killing them within minutes in the back of a van, and dumping their bodies in trash bins, click here.
PETA gave a No Kill shelter a basket of cookies to celebrate an announcement that they would start killing again after four years. To learn more, click here.
Rainbow Rescue on giving animals to PETA: “I thought it was the answer from heaven. We just thought ‘PETA is the godfather for animals.’” They were told that the animals they transferred to PETA “would be prepared for potential adoption.” They were lied to and ended up dead. Click here for the story.
Click here to read Ingrid Newkirk admitting she would go to work early to kill animals – “I must have killed a thousand of them, sometimes dozens per day.”
Over the objections of feral cat advocates pushing for a TNR program, the Mayor of Miami Beach pushed a plan to trap and kill feral cats. PETA sent a letter to the Mayor applauding his decision. The Mayor, however, had also decided that kittens would be turned over to a rescue group for socialization and adoption. But PETA took issue with this part of the plan, arguing that all the cats, including the kittens, should be taken to animal control and “euthanized by sodium pentobarbital injection.” Click here for PETA’s letter.
For information about PETA killing in the face of alternatives, testimony by a veterinarian that the cat and kittens he gave PETA after they promised to find them homes were healthy but killed within minutes, their defense of neglectful and even abusive killing shelters, their opposition to TNR for healthy feral cats, their claim that cats should be rounded up and killed and so much more (read the articles and follow the internal links), click here.
There are dozens of articles and internal links, my book Friendly Fire documents even more, and I have even more beyond the book, all leading to the same conclusion:
You either love animals or you love PETA, but you can’t love both because the two are mutually exclusive."

Richard Berman has been a regular front man for business and industry in campaigns against consumer safety and environmental groups. Through his public affairs firm, Berman and Company, Berman has fought unions, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, PETA and other watchdog groups in their efforts to raise awareness about obesity, the minimum wage, the dangers of smoking, mad cow disease, drunk driving, and other causes. Berman runs at least 23 industry-funded front groups and projects, such as the Center for Union Facts and holds 24 "positions" in those organizations.

Each year, Berman, using his front groups to spread misinformation, spends millions of dollars distracting the public with misleading ads.

60 Minutes has called him "the booze and food industries' weapon of mass destruction," and he was given the nickname "Dr. Evil" by labor union activist Richard Bensinger.

More accusations about PETA have surfaced today, March 15, 2013.

I am amazed on how many people sign petitions supporting PETA and the great work they do yet believing internet garbage from idiots like Nathan J. Winograd that want to shut PETA down. PETA kills animals? Come on people!

Yes I started this petition but now I don't believe the accusations whatsoever!

PETA would be long gone if these accusations were true.

So sorry you have been sucked in by lies. PETA is not what you think they are. I and many others were sucked in. Google PETA kills 29.000 thousand healthy animals a year! I know, shocking. And email them about some animal abuse, no reply, just pictures if abuse and asking for money. Please research!

Turned Away: A closer look at 'No-Kill'

As far a doing a google search about PETA, anyone, likely the haters, are making the search popular by clicking on the negative PETA sites.

I STILL DO NOT BELIEVE THAT PETA WOULD KILL HEALTHY ANIMALS. I wish I would have done my researching before posting this. I did exactly what the haters of PETA wanted me to do, when I first posted this bash PETA website.

Friday April 26, 2013, 7:02 pm
It is true, sorry. Research it. It was on the news today, 29.000 animals put down in the back of their van, picking them up from shelters and promising them homes and staff were found guilty of dumping them in skips. Apparently it was cheaper. I fell for them and I am the biggest animal lover you will ever meet, please research this. They have an expert who said to send out suck pics of animals to get us to give money. I have emailed PETA loads of times about animal abuse, no reol, juat asking me for money and sick pictures. if tbey ate wrong, they would be sued.

Right before dawn one morning, a man drove up to a "no-kill" animal shelter in Virginia. He didn't know anyone was watching, but he apparently did know that the limited-admission shelter often refused entry to animals in need. The man was seen throwing a mixed-breed dog—frightened and malnourished, with every rib visible—from his vehicle before speeding off into the dark. Terrified and desperate, the dog ran onto a nearby highway. It was not long before she was struck by a car. A shelter worker found the dog struggling to stand, apparently having sustained a broken back and a crushed pelvis. The young dog was finally euthanized because of the extent of her pain and injuries.

If the shelter had had in place an open-door policy—or even if it had simply transported her to the local high-intake open-admission shelter—this dog would have been spared terror, pain, suffering, and perhaps even death.

'Sorry—We're Full'

A first-of-its-kind video reveals how, every day, animals like this abandoned dog are turned away by shelters boasting of "no-kill" policies. Keeping animals out of shelters may keep "no-kill" shelters' euthanasia rates low and make for effective fundraising, but it spells disaster for animals. See why "no-kill" can mean no help for the neediest cats and dogs:

Don't believe these attacks on PETA and other animal-welfare groups!
The "Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF)" is one of the fake front groups run by Berman & CO, a public relations lobbyist-for-hire company who's been hired by the corporate meat & dairy, tobacco, liquor, pharmacy industries - any corporation that needs PR and lobbying to combat the scrutiny of anti-cruelty investigators.
Richard Berman & his Washington DC public relations group have come up with the sneaky idea of masquerading as concerned citizen grassroots groups in order to oppose anti-cruelty activism.
Now they are branching out into social media and comment sections of news media. Watch out for them!
