This is outrageous - the poll so far
Web Poll Results

Do you think it's appropriate for a school group to raffle off a bear hunting trip as a way to raise money for a trip to New York City?

61% Yes
39% No
And some of the comments are quite disturbing - the mentality of these people is a real worry!
And BTW -odds are that they won't print it - they're only printing favourable ones - with the odd token one against thrown in here and there!

noted and signed - one would have to wonder if they have run out high school stundents to shoot - so now they have to raffle off bear hunts!
(before i get slaughtered this is a satirical comment and no offence is intended...) unlike the offence on the Black Bears which is.

One of my ignorant states-sheople writes in "sure why not, it is not illegal,duh..." Sadly, stepping in before her parents decided to WAS illegal. My friends "The Blend" from Kennebunkport put out a couple of albums on MCA and one of their biggest songs was ann anti-hunting song about shooting a bear. "The Prize." It is on YouTube from their final concert and I had it on my page but the sound quality was poor from a handicam. Believe me, the people who condone this in my state are the vast minority. Odd how the intellect of these hunters is in direct corrolation to the act.

Isn't there enough killing in the world??? To kill beautiful wildlife for a trip is unconcionable and teaches very bad morals to our children!

Do you think it's appropriate for a school group to raffle off a bear hunting trip as a way to raise money for a trip to New York City? 58% Yes
42% No

How horrible. The principle of that school should be the target not the bear.

Susan Hall-Amado (61)
Friday February 22, 2008, 12:25 pm
This is totally inappropriate. If this is the type of activity that is condoned by the school system....we are in trouble. If the principle is advocating for this type of fund raising event, perhaps, he should be the hunting victim. The students can give him a 10 minute head start.

Patricia Hoffstaetter (33)

To the person/persons that thought of the idea "Bear hunting Trip" as a way of raising money for music students to go to a music festival. "Please use yourself/yourselves as the target and I promise to buy 10 tickets". Thank-you for promoting pain, fear and killing as a prize. May you have an interesting future known as a person promoting pain, fear, suffering and death.

stupid. that is the worst they can do. even with a gun bears can break them and kill u half to death. she/he should take them to a zoo or something not on a bear hunt......well if they wont to get them selfs killed let them. i have no say in this, but i am still against it 10000%

Just voted and comment added: No wonder the World is in the state it is when a schools value of life drops as low as this.
School is (or was!)a place where you learn values and respect for others.
The idea of a school encouraging students to kill for perverse pleasure is just so wrong!

Are they eating the meat? I don't think people eat black bear but I'm not positive. It makes a difference to me. Killing for fun is sick.

BUT I'm shocked that anyone would say this is wrong and that we are teaching our children to kill, and then say a human should be killed instead. Regardless of whether this is right or wrong, if you take a non-violent stance, please follow through with it.

And no offense, but voting more than once is exactly why these polls don't mean anything.

In many places they used to shut down school on the first day of hunting season. My how times have changed, and not necessarily for the better. What's the difference between eating a bear and eating a cow, anyway? At least a hunter knows where his meat comes from and exactly what is involved in getting that meat to his table. Instead of just some silly, worthless "no" vote, why don't you buy a raffle ticket and up the chances that someone will win who has no intention of hunting the bear with anything more deadly than a camera.

what's wrong with people. these animals are not overpopulated. killing them is a crime on the few remaining large wild animals. we have taken their land and food away for ourselves and the places they have left should be left to them. sport for the sake of killing is worse than war among ourselves. the bears have no chance to win.

In the UP of Michigan, where I live, schools are actually closed for the first day of rifle season for deer. So, I am not surprised when I hear that they are raffling tickets for a bear hunt. I don't think it is a fit thing for a school to encourage. It shows them being on the side and propegating hunting instead of conservation. Some believe it is part of conservation to hunt. I don't. Some also believe it is OK to eat feel lot animals, I don't. Killing of anything makes it seem OK to kill for any reasons.

The only "shooting" of live "targets" in this the 21st century.....should be with a camera!
maybe the resulting films could be auctioned off to raise extra cash!
to encourage the youth of the day to shoot live targets....can only de-sensitize them to the pain & suffering of living creatures of any species!

Noted -- and I vote a big, resounding "NO"!

If schools are encouraging hunting, then I am not surprised at the level of violence in our schools! Research bears out that those who commit acts of violence against humans, started with animals! Not my opinion, but FBI profiling/research.

Whatever happened to bake sales, raffles for TVs, iPods, etc., carnivals, and musicals?! Seems like a much more EDUCATIONAL, constructive way to raise funds!

Diana D. -- Thank you for the research and most of all for your action! I hope many more follow your lead. I am reposting your comment here to make it easier for everyone to see:

From Diana D. (scroll up):
This really bothered me, so I have been doing some research.
local newspaper article http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080215/GJNEWS_01/765307842
the schools website

I also wrote a personal letter to the school principal and copied the school board and the reporter on the local paper.

speak your mind directly: 207.676-2843 Noble High School 388 Somersworth Rd North Berwick, ME 03906 My comment: Whose idiotic, cruel, and totally objectinable idea was this? If staff, fire the person and take their pension. If a volunteer - ban them from all future participation. The person who thought this up should be in a mental instution. The people who approved it should go along. All people involved should be required to do 1,000 hours of community service for ASPCA or the Human Society, or both.

They are still taking votes - it's now
Yes 49%
No 51%
We are gradually making a difference - so please keep on voting!
They have also actually printed some of the "anti" comments, althought they only seem to be from Maine residents.

Thank you for flagging the threatening nasty comment from the person who I guess was a troll. Also I apologize for copy pasting it word for word, I meant to take out the language, but I was side tracked, so luckily
I was flagged too. Still waiting to hear from the school. Peace to all.

Holding a raffle to kill a bear is outrageous! That is not a school I would want my child going to. I don't believe that has anything to do with education.

I just find that a high school in the USA would approve of a bear hunt for a high school trip. What is wrong with these people - havent' they heard of a civilized world yet? I can't believe the Maine state legislators would allow that as part of a school project. Just think these kids will be the next generation in Maine. The thought of that scares me.

Obscene.........Don't we do enough to wildlife and the environment. Do we now have to make a sport out of it?

Very sad, our focus on killing everything. I'm too late for the poll, but signed the petition. Noted, thanks Pam.

I don't eat meat, and don't like hunting, period.

Let us do keep in mind that Maine has a lot of rural area, and that hunting has been an accepted past-time there.

All the more reason to applaud those folks in Maine for challenging this as an unfit example for children and any fund-raising on their behalf !
