Young women in Fallujah in Iraq are terrified of having children because of the increasing number of babies born grotesquely deformed, with no heads, two heads, a single eye in their foreheads, scaly bodies or missing limbs

This needs to be investigated, the facts and causes need to be brought to light. Find the truth and the people(s) responsible brought to justice. Of course war sucks, it has no benefits. But this is an atrocity of the type Saddam used on his people when he was in power. I see no difference.

Did US Army Cause Iraq Birth Defects?
7:32am UK, Thursday May 29, 2008

Families in the Iraqi city of Fallujah are calling for an investigation into their claims of a rise in the number of birth defects.

Three-year-old Fatima Ahmed

They have raised concerns about the weapons used by American forces in 2004 - whenFallujah suffered one of the heaviest bombardments of the entire war in Iraq.

The evidence is anecdotal because there are no records from the era of Saddam Hussein to compare their stories against.

But Hikmat Tawfeeq, deputy chairman of the Fallujah-based human rights group Alakhiyar said: "We have around 200 cases of deformities recorded by our society. Most of these cases are birth deformities which have arisen after the bombing of Fallujah."

Campaigners say officials are reluctant to speak out publicly, but at Fallujah's children's hospital one doctor told Sky News in the past month she has seen one or two cases of birth deformities every day.

An opthalmologist said he deals with four or five cases of newborn babies every week suffering from some form of eye deformity - and that has risen in the last two years.

At one of the cemeteries in Fallujah, undertaker Mahmoud Hummadi said he usually buries four to five bodies of newborns every day and most of them are deformed.

Fallujah today still bears the scars of a time when it represented the backbone of the Sunni insurgency - a power-base America decided it had to break.

April and November 2004 saw some of the heaviest bombardments of the war in Iraq, including the controversial use of white phosphorous.

It is a highly flammable material which ignites when it comes into contact with oxygen, causing severe burns.

In a statement to Sky News the US military said it had used white phosphorus in Fallujah but primarily as a smokescreen and not as an incendiary weapon.

The families say doctors have raised concerns to them about what kinds of materials were used by the Americans in order to achieve their military goals.

Fatima Ahmed is three years old. Small and lifeless she barely moves, burdened by two heads on her tiny frame.

Her mother Shukriya says doctors have been unable to diagnose exactly what has caused Fatima's condition.

But her father Jassim, when asked who he held responsible for his daughter's condition, said: "It's because of the war - it's the flagrant aggression they launched against us. What they dropped in Fallujah God knows."

We showed our findings from Fallujah to Alastair Hay, a professor of environmental toxicology at Leeds University.

He is currently investigating injuries caused to children during the war in Iraq. He says without an independent medical study it is impossible to say for sure what has caused the deformities and how they may be linked.

But he says there has never been a study examining if there ARE links between white phosphorus and birth deformities.

Expert Help For Deformed Babies
2:49pm UK, Thursday January 29, 2009

Lisa Holland, foreign affairs correspondent

A Sky News investigation into babies born with deformities in heavily-bombed areas of Iraq has led to the creation of an expert medical training programme.

Fatima Ahmed was born in Fallujah with deformities that include two heads

Eight months ago, Sky News reported the desperate calls for international help from families in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, where growing numbers of children were being born with deformities.

Concerns were increasing that the rise in deformities may have been linked to the use of chemical weapons by US forces.

Sky showed the plight of three-year-old Fatima Ahmed, who was born with two heads and could not see, hear or move by herself.

After seeing our report, professor Kypros Nicolaides of the Fetal Medicine Foundation in London offered to set up an expert training programme to help the babies.

Dr Muntaha Hashim

And after months of paperwork and red tape, the first Iraqi doctor is about to travel to Jordan and London for the training programme.

Dr Muntaha Hashim, a 39-year-old prenatal care specialist, is one of the most senior doctors at Fallujah general hospital.

Her life has been dedicated to the welfare of those in her city and it is hoped that with the training ahead, she will return with a unique set of skills to help pregnant women and babies.

It is also hoped she will set up a birth deformity register, to reveal the extent of the problem.

In April and November 2004, Fallujah suffered some of the heaviest bombardments of the Iraq war.

The US military said it used the banned weapon white phosphorus, but primarily as a smokescreen - permitted under international law.

When used as an incendiary weapon, however, the chemical can cause serious burns and is linked to deformities in new-born children.

Hikmat Tawfeeq, deputy chairman of the Fallujah-based human rights group Alakhiyar, told Sky News last May: "We have around 200 cases of deformities recorded by our society. Most of these cases are birth deformities which have arisen after the bombing of Fallujah."

At one cemetery in Fallujah, undertaker Mahmoud Hummadi said he usually buried four to five bodies of newborns every day, most of them with deformities.

I agree with you Uhoud, even though Saddam had his faults, the present governing body is many times worse for the citizens of Iraq. I dislike war so much, just look at these after effects to prove my point. I don't like to discuss politics but this issue has much to do with political corruption. The U.S. policies are probably the most to blame.

I am a mother myself. I belong to a family of humankind. Those babies are my sister's babies, and I am sad and aghast and very furious.
Jerks have divided us to nations, races and religions. This artificial differences have one purpose only: to round up us in herds like ships, guarded by their dogs and permanently frightened up by imaginary distinctions and menaces.
Constantly watered from spring of fear, brainwashed, mesmerized, overworked, separated and antagonized, we are just what our owners need - disposal, self-propagative facility.

I will also spread this news story around....it is always the children and the innocent who suffer the most.

I do believe something horrible happened over there, for we have soldiers who served in Iraq that are having all sorts of medical complaints. Of coarse our Government is denying to them that it had anything to do with Iraq, but these soldiers feel otherwise. One man has nerve damage that I spoke to, his face twitches all the time now, he must wear dark glasses as his eyes pain him, he has headaches....he served Iraq.

Same crap that our soldiers suffered in VietNam with Agent Orange and it took years of these soldiers fighting the Government for it to admit that Agent Orange did cause many of their medical complaints. Not to mention those who live in VietNam that also suffer from the Agent Orange.

This is all part of the plan by a few Elites that control all the Power around the world....I don't even feel our Leaders are in control anymore. They have been bought to do these Elites bidding and all they care about is their Oil, Natural Gas lines, or whatever else is important to them. It isn't the children they care about, it isn't the destruction they cause to our Earth Mother, it is the greed and the power they seek and beware if you stand in their way.

Watch the following video if you don't think that to be the case:

http://www.care2.com/news/member/760164053/1292022

The United States is being driven into the ground financially to support the War Machine that does nothing but destroy the lives of people around the world, and including families of the soldiers who go, being feed lies as to why they go.

http://www.nationalpriorities.org/25th_anniversary_video

The United States needs to take care of its own business over here and stop invading into places that do not want us nor should we be there to begin with. The United States leaves a path of destruction in its wake that will take years for the people to repair and the hard feelings left behind will take longer still to mend.

These poor women, have they not suffered enough, their homes ruined, family killed around them, now they must fear to have a child for they know not how the child will be born. Those poor babies coming into a world that maimed them and killed them before they took their first breath.

I agree a full study by impartial scientist should be involved to completely rule in or out what really happened to cause these medical conditions....that way absolute proof is on hand....so the ball can't be passed from what Saddam did to what someone else did.

It is time for the USA, UK and Australia ("the coalition of the willing" who invaded Iraq) to offer citizenship to all Iraqis who want it, to escape from the war-ravaged and depelted-uranium-polluted land that the invaders have left them with!!!

It is time for the USA, UK and Australia ("the coalition of the willing" who invaded Iraq) to give massive compensation to Iraq for the damages done to Iraq's people (loved ones lost, health problems from depeleted uranium weapons and other weapons), plus for the damage done to homes, hospitals, schools, workplaces, water systems, sewerage systems, electricity systems and other infrastructure, and stop exploiting Iraq's oil and workers!!!

Thanks Uhoud for shedding light on this important issue. If severe birth defects like this were being seen in North America at this rate it would be all over the news. This is very disturbing. It should be a priority to get to the bottom of this issue. Someone needs to be held accountable for this. Who will pay the long-term care costs for these children?

I clicked on the photo and promptly vomited my dinner - it's appalling, though the truth has to be aired and discussed.

What isn't being talked about is all the OTHER births that are happening like this...Iraqi wildlife is probably suffering the same fate and their agony is going unnoticed. Perhaps by bringing this atrocity to light, the crimes committed against ALL creatures will become a cause for accountability, too. My god, humans are evil creatures.

I am tearing up from what these chemical weapons have done to the land, the water, the air, the food, the animals, the men, the women, and the children...., everywhere, but mostly in Iraq and the regions of war. So much Pain and suffering..., through invasion of political intent.....

Uhoud you should have received the Dare To Dream email which shows that it's moving throughout the network. This is an abomination which my nation has had the audacity to "Dare" bring into the lives of all breathing entities.. This Depleted Uranium poison goes back to the first Gulf War.. We have veterans suffering from many odd ailments, cancers, etc., Shades of Agent Orange! I first became familiar with this back in the 1990's.. I was asked to visit with a female who had served in Iraq. I was told that both she, her husband, and their new born had some strange illness. By the time I heard the story this entire family was dead.

Recently at a veterans gathering I heard a young man, who had served in Iraq, say that he and his family were suffering from some odd illness and he said he knew he brought home something that had infected his family. He said the authorities would not deal with what he was saying. He also seemed fearful and stand offish which I believe was because he was not sure who he could trust!

My nation owes you and your people more then an apology could ever cover! Dear Uhoud I know that you're aware that many Americans are very angry at what has been done throughout Iraq. Please keep the info flowing so we can get the word out and out and out! This problem has far reaching implications.. Take care of yourself!

The atrocities committed by the Bush/Blair liason are beyond comprehension for any with half a brain and I don't beleive those two had one brain between them and now the latter wants to be President of the EU being disbarred from being President of the US! The arrogance of these people is appalling! The site of mutilated bodies whether in Northern Ireland, Gaza, Baghdad or anywhere else the US has directly or indirectly sponsored crimes against humanity and in Gaza and Baghdad innocent zoo animals. It would take more than intravenous Horlicks to make the average person sleep at night after being responsible for such terror and horror! The instigators of these actions should be lined up with the rest of the war criminals from Nuremburg to the Hague! The blatant butchery of the innocent children and animals is contemptable enough but the legacy of poisonous munitions unknown future birth defects and latent problems building up is unconscionable. Whatever the crimes of Saddam and company the US have trounced their tally big time. Sadly big is not beautiful when it comes to raining death and destruction on the innocent and providing a legacy of continuing torment. I have seen people criticise the Gaza Zoo keepers for painting two donkeys as Zebras in their efforts to maintain children's interest in the wake of the destruction by the Israeli US sponsored targetting of 400 animals there leaving only 10 alive! Some of those critics were from the US! It is very easy to make such judgements when there is running water in your tap, electricity at your powerpoint and a roof over your head your children and animals are healthy and well fed and the nearest store is across the road! Contrast that with the collapse of the infrastructure facilitated by the bombing and the unknown future both literally and emotionally visited on the people of Iraq etc by Bush's bomdardments and you have some idea of what Hell must have in store for Messrs Bush and Blair! My dear friend Uhoud my heart reaches out to you and your compatriots in the hope that one day that your beautiful country will be restored to it's rightful place as the cradle of civilisation, free of outside interference!

This scary situation, unfortunately,is due to the uranium bombs used by USA forces. This is a war crime. G.W.Bush,Chenny and Rumsfield must be accused and punished by the International court.I think this is the responsibility of the Iraqi government in the first place to call for a UN investigation.I doubt the Iraqi government will do this. The only way in this case may be Amnesty International and other local and international organization. The Iraqi human rights groups and other civil society organizations must start a campaign that may lead the UN International Human Rights Council to start an investigation in this subject.

As we all know, it is the use of depleted uranium & white phosphorus bombs that cause such damage.

These weapons should be outlawed -in fact, they are, yet are still used!- & those who use/have used them, who ordered their use in populated areas, should be on trial & in prison, exposed to public wrath & scorn. They are monsters! No war can possibly justify causing such lasting harm & suffering to civilians.

I found the following when I googled "depleted uranium ":

Iraq: 'Special Weapons' Have a Fallout on Babies (http://ipsnews.net/text/news.asp?idnews=42762)

After denying it at first, the Pentagon admitted in November 2005 that white phosphorous, a restricted incendiary weapon, was used a year earlier in Fallujah.

In addition, depleted uranium (DU) munitions, which contain low-level radioactive waste, were used heavily in Fallujah. The Pentagon admits to having used 1,200 tonnes of DU in Iraq thus far.

Many doctors believe DU to be the cause of a severe increase in the incidence of cancer in Iraq, as well as among U.S. veterans who served in the 1991 Gulf War and through the current occupation.

"We saw all the colours of the rainbow coming out of the exploding American shells and missiles," Ali Sarhan, a 50-year-old teacher who lived through the two U.S. sieges of 2004 told IPS. "I saw bodies that turned into bones and coal right after they were exposed to bombs that we learned later to be phosphorus.

The most worrying is that many of our women have suffered loss of their babies, and some had babies born with deformations."

"I had two children who had brain damage from birth," 28-year-old Hayfa' Shukur told IPS. "My husband has been detained by the Americans since November 2004 and so I had to take the children around by myself to hospitals and private clinics. They died. I spent all our savings and borrowed a considerable amount of money."

Shukur said doctors told her that it was use of the restricted weapons that caused her children's brain damage and subsequent deaths, "but none of them had the courage to give me a written report."

Many doctors speak of similar cases and a similar pattern. The indications remain anecdotal, in the absence of either a study, or any available official records.

The Fallujah General Hospital administration was unwilling to give any statistics on deformed babies, but one doctor volunteered to speak on condition of anonymity - for fear of reprisals if seen to be critical of the administration.

"Maternal exposure to toxins and radioactive material can lead to miscarriage and frequent abortions, still birth, and congenital malformation," the doctor told IPS. There have been many such cases, and the government "did not move to contain the damage, or present any assistance to the hospital whatsoever.

"These cases need intensive international efforts that provide the highest and most recent technologies that we will not have here in a hundred years," he added.

(Iraqi Health Minister Salih al-Hassnawi) said the 2008 health budget meant that total expenditure on medicines, medical equipment and ambulances would amount to an average of 22 dollars per citizen.

But this is too late for the unknown number of babies and their families who bore the consequences of the earlier devastation. And it is too little to cover the special needs of babies who survived with deformations.

It was in fact 'depleted uranium Fallujah' that i googled.

I also got this from Sky News. It's a Sept 2009 update on their original breaking of the story of the truth of all these babies' horrendous deformities and their parents endless sorrow.
There are a few videos showing these poor babies & their children. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice should be made to view them non-stop in Guantanamo -- yes, after viewing this, I am ready to support keeping Guantanamo open just for these war criminals. No one should be able to go on living their normal, priviledged life after leaving such devastation and heartbreak in the wake of their war! They should be made to pay for all these children's medical bills, too -- THAT would be ACCOUNTABILITY that has meaning !!

The Truth Of Iraq's City Of Deformed Babies
8:48am UK, Tuesday September 01, 2009
Lisa Holland, foreign affairs correspondent

An Iraqi doctor has told Sky News the number of babies born with deformities in the heavily-bombed area of Fallujah is still on the increase.

Fifteen months ago a Sky News investigation revealed growing numbers of children being born with defects in Fallujah.

Concerns were that the rise in deformities may have been linked to the use of chemical weapons by US forces.

We recently returned to find out the current situation and what has happened to some of the children we featured.

In May last year, we told the story of a three-year-old girl called Fatima Ahmed who was born with two heads.

When we filmed her she seemed like a listless bundle - she lay there barely able to breathe and unable to move.
Even now and having seen the pictures many times since I still feel shocked and saddened when I look at her.

But the prognosis for Fatima never looked good and, as feared, she never made it to her fourth birthday.
Her mother Shukriya told us about the night her daughter died. (this is on video)

Another girl we met last year was Tiba Aftan who was born with a huge growth across her face.
Now she is a toddler her future is looking brighter having gone to neighbouring Jordan to have it removed.
The growth had covered half of Tiba's forehead and was invading one of her eyes - and it was getting bigger as she got older. (Tiba and her mom are on video, too. The mom tells of their tribulations trying to get Tiba to a hospital in Jordan. The mom is beautiful, & so is Tiba, the right-side of her face, that is: poor darling! )
Although the operation was a success, Tiba will need more surgery and the last trip cost her family almost every penny they have.

But since our original investigation, we have built up a new dossier of cases of deformed children in Fallujah born in the last eight months.

There are a wide range of problems - from abnormalities of the abdomen to facial disfigurements.

We have also seen pictures of all kinds of deformed foetuses which have not survived.

There is no precise explanation as to what has caused the deformities and there are no figures to compare cases with those a decade or more ago as records were not kept during the time of Saddam Hussein.

All of our evidence is anecdotal, but repeatedly people tell us they believe the deformities must be linked to the heavy bombardment of Fallujah - a Sunni insurgent stronghold - by America in 2004.

People want an independent investigation into the impact of the kinds of weapons used - including controversial white phosphorus.

Yet even since we first started to give a voice to the calls for help from the people of Fallujah things seem to have got worse.

Dr Ahmed Uraibi, a specialist paediatrician in Fallujah, told us that the number of deformities he has dealt with has increased in the last year.

The people of Fallujah want to know how many more deformed babies there will be before someone sits up and takes notice of them.

Click here to view the videos from "The Truth Of Iraq's City Of Deformed Babies" (Scroll down the page - they're at the end of the article)

Click here to view the video & text about "3-year-old Saif Basim (who) has endured three operations - one of them an epic 9 hours long - to remove a growth the size of a melon from his face and neck." The video shows him at the London hospital where he was recuperating nicely this past August.

excerpts:
"The pressing concern was breathing," said maxillofacial surgeon Graham Smith.
"Over a two-month period it had grown steadily worse. In just a few more months he could have died."

Before the operation at St George's Hospital in London, the 12lb tumour had grown so aggressively it had paralysed the nerves in Saif's face. Scans taken before the surgery showed the tumour had eaten away Saif's cheek bone and a large section of his jaw.

Mr Smith met Saif in Baghdad during a teaching trip earlier this year, but decided it was too risky to operate in Iraq. He and other doctors secured a loan from The Norman Rowe International Educational Foundation to cover the cost of bringing the youngster to London.
Royal Jordanian Airlines then flew Saif and his father to Britain at no cost."

How many Tibas & Saifs are there -- with AND without the happy endings?

Thank you for this most distressing issue.

My heart goes out to the Iraqi people in general.

I keep them them in my thoughts and prays and offer the suggestion that the only way these issues will be resolved is not by violence in retaliation or by name calling, but by peace and diplomacy, even if it looks impossible.

God works in mysterious ways, we just must open that door and allow him to do the work the maker does so perfectly.

I hate this. I hate all WAR. You will not see this on any news in America because our Government does not want people to know this is going on. If they put this and other atrocities that were going on in the news and showed people what was really going on we would be in the streets screaming like we did during the Vietnam War. I don't understand why we are in the streets screaming anyway.

Thank you Uhoud for this story. I am so sorry that this has happened to your country. I thought attacking your country, Uhoud was a horrible mistake and it would have horrible consequences. War is never the solution to anything and as far as I am concerned this was an ILLEGAL WAR at that! The people responsible should be punished. I truely do share your pain and I am ashamed that the USA caused this horrendous problem. Actions have consequences and those actions deserved to be punished! My heart aches for you and your people. I really can't stop crying. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the people of Iraq.

Now I understand the tap dance about new greener weapons. You do realize all the troops exposed to this will die as well? I sometimes wonder if humans can think at all. This is heart-rending. But so too will be the millions of brave US armed forces members who will die from the fallout.
We lost enough people from 9/11. My deepest sympathies to all who will suffer from this. It isn't just a problem for Iraq or the US, but all the world suffers when war happens. No offense meant, but this is exactly why we should stay home and worry about our own kind. Nobody ever thanks or cares about the US. If those troops had been feeding and housing the homeless here, this would not have happened. The next time the world cries for us to bail them out, remember this.

http://thewe.cc/weplanet/news/depleted_uranium_iraq_afghanistan_balkans.html

I don't mean to imply we shouldn't help, I mean to imply none of this would happen if we didn't leave the US in the first place. ALL wars cause this kind of horrors, not just the ones we are involved in.

May these children be protected by the Baron and healed by Bastet Herself. Also may painful death come to the idiot that thought up these weapons in the first place.

There's a bit of a problem with Nightcat's comment: "The next time the world cries for us to bail them out, remember this" - it seems to be removing responsibility & blame for this from the US, casting the US in the double role of both victim & hero, rather than the perpetrator of the war in Iraq!

The people of Iraq did not 'cry for the US to bail them out' !! Where did you get ever that from? This was the Bush administration's idea, remember? The preemptive war, remember? The decision to attack Iraq because of weapons of mass destruction that, the Bush administration claimed, posed an imminent threat to the US, but failed to ever materialize? Saddam Hussein cast as an al-Qaida supporter to justify attacking Iraq? And the US Congress, media, and public bought this, hook, line & sinker, remember?
This was all about OIL, getting hold of Iraq's oil !!

It's very nice to come out with a generic denunciation of war, but not when it serves to put up a smoke screen that blurs the causes, and seeks to preserve the perpetrators from their responsibility in destroying a whole country and using banned weapons against civilian populations.

I was wondering about the Us bailing people out comment. I'm seem to remember they were late for two world wars until the cowardly bombing of Pearl Harbour by the Japanese woke up their government and they sat glued to the fence when Argentina invaded the British Falkland Islands! Contrast that with that with say the Australian assistance in Vietnam and the UK's rush to join in the illegal Iraq war and in Afghanistan were we are still burying soldiers from that one in company with many othersand I think you get the picture of who does not bail anyone out unless it's for selfish ends! Had Herr Hitler overrun us in WW2 the US would be flying the Swastika from the White House today! Of course we would not be able to make free with our comments either!

Alba, first off, name me a just war. C'mon, just one. Nothing? No war is just or fair. War is hell and deals death to the soul, mind and body. And as so long as two humans live and disagree we will always have war.

ChrisB. There has never been nor will there ever be a noble war. And yes, why should I see the children I work with grow up to die in wars we should have nothing to do with? I notice you thought wars you had a emotional cause in were just. And for the record if Hitler had won the war all Americans would have been exterminated. Remember his comment of being half this and half that?

That these children are in such a plight is a tragedy. But it is nothing compared to what we will do in the future. You don't think any war machine just stops, do you? It always evolves, towards more deadly results.

Love Canal was done to our own citizens. If we are nothing and expendable, who isn't? That isn't fair or right, but life often isn't. There's never a good excuse for war. I don't care who's going to loose what. If people want to kill off half thier own population that's fine with me.

And no I don't think we should be evolved in other people's problems. Our troops could be far more useful at home attending to those Americans who need them. If the rest of you want to blow eachother to kingdom come stop roping us into the problems you start.

I notice niether of you had a problem with members of the US armed forces dying needlessly. How typical. We are expendable but the rest of the world is sacred according to that logic. None of you are our responsibility. We help because we want to, not because we have to.

Thank you Uhoud for the lovely invite. Of course I feel your plight. Seeing children from my shores being mowed down in a sensless war is terrible. Why do I even bother giving an education to cannon fodder? Why even care about a teen that will be coming home in a box? Because we are women that's why.

Every local or national death enrages me. So does the plight of these poor children and women. But I know yet another war is not the answer. You may have to look to your own people for an answer. Our gov't did this to our children too in Love Canal. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to admit it.

Also, you all knew our Gov't knew about the bombing in Pearl Harbor BEFORE it happened, right? We are expendable to our gov't at any time. I may even be drug from my house one day never to be heard from again. We don't live in a democracy over here.

The rich and strong dominate the weak and poor. Just like anywhere else. One of the fun things about living over here is the Gov't can do anything they darn well please with you, same as anywhere.

We only go to war as "we" for a good reason: they'd kill us for treason if we didn't. Where people get the idea the average American loves war, I'll never know. We've just gotten used to having no choice.

I don't recall the UK starting the European wars or forcing Japan or Russia at the start to side with Hitler as he jackbooted his way through the countries of Europe. Certainly there is no such thing as a noble war but when your backs are to the wall and your friends let you down but you support them, the the critcism becomes unfair As to troops coming home in boxes two from my local town where in the group of 5 killed by the taliban "policeman" in Afghanistan and every person that comes home to Britain in a coffin gets a Heroes welcome in the UK broadcast live on national tv sadly the resorts are that much of this is suppressed for political reasons or perhaps was in the US! The ineptitude of the political masters of the military in both our countries does not detract from the bravery and service of individual soldiers who are still daily giving their lives and I consider it offensive to assume that I don't either care or respect the military of any conflict they find themselves sent to at our goverments behest legal or illegal, good, bad or indiffernet causes. I happen to come from a military family and personally know the sacrifice made by individuals in many theatres of operation. There is along list of atrocities committed on govermental whims all around the world and of course the US does not have a monopoly on nastiness in this respect However when you make an unfounded personal attack you must expect to be answered and I would suggest you read some of my comments on other threads if you want anymore about my thoughts on the subject as this thread is drifting off topic and we should remember the victims of all war which include the military and the innocent populations they are sent to fight over! All life is precious and standing by and doing nothing is the very reason evil suceeds!

Chris, I agree on Hitler he had to be stopped. But we can't use past examples as a basis for wars now or in the future. War must end. Most likely it won't, but it must.

We get the BBC here, believe it or not, and see far too many young men and women coming back to your shores in boxes as well. What I'm pointing out, ortrying to, is that war solves nothing. All we get from, it is fallout like these poor children.

Think also of the terrified mothers. I remember women from the Love Canal simply choosing death for themselves. It scares a woman witless. After all we get blamed when the child isn't "normal".

These poor women and children will ber outcasts, and yes that pisses me off big time. All thier lives they will be treated as evil for the sin of being different.

Now to improve both of our English usage. Should the US Gov't pay to care for this mess? Yes, but the monsters who designed and made these weapons should pay first.

I do read your comments. That is why we argue all of the time. Just please mind your usage of the word US. It implies ALL Americans agree with this war and caused this tragedy. Clearly we don't all agree with it.

I'm hoping these poor women and children are not total outcasts. Modern humans are not beyond attacking the different. And yes, humans the world over will kick those who are down.

Is there any protection whatsoever for these people? I'm guessing there won't be. But oddly enough, this could only happen in Iraq, I think. Designer children are the "in" thing in too many places. These sweet babes would never see the light of day in that case.

They are all lovely little ones and I hope and pray for a brighter future for them. All children like all humans are beautiful. Being an extension of Divinity, they are bright and lovely sparks sent to cheer us.

When are sweet children are unwell that is a call to all of us to stop everything and help them. I noticed the high mortality rate and it saddens me.

Being a marvel myself, I adore every micro-fiber of these little ones. They have a tough road ahead, and I know it. But we take care of our own kind. These little ones will be in my heart, always.

Can you imagine a priestess of Bast who didn't love children? The good of the world will triumph and these children will be cared for. Instead of more war, fight for peace, and a brighter future for these little ones.

I'm not sure how we were supposed to know about the Japanese intentions, the purple code of the Japanese Navy was so secret that the cryptologists working on it did not know what they were working on in the interests of security much of the Enigma traffic was decoded and not used in theatre because it would be obvious where it came from but few in the military would have known this let alone the civilian population and remember Europe was occupied at this time and they were only 20 miles across the English Channel in France waiting invade us! Perhaps if you had been occupied buy a belligerant force you might modify your opinions! So who was it that knew few politicians would have been in the know because of Churchill and Roosevelt's secrecy and cloak and dagger obsessions! So I do not understand that criticism either. Much of the information about decoding has only been made public in the last few year and the secret HQ known to those in the know as Station X has know been opened to the public and of course all the attendant publicity that surround the appalling UK governemnt treatment of the gay man who probably saved the lives of millions with his invention of code breaking computors (Alan Turing) proscecuted for have a homosexual relationship and chemically sterilised which resulted in his suicde in the fifties! So yes governments have a lot of nastiness on their minds because they don't have consciences! I for one would never glorify war but I have the utmost respect for those that are called upon to fight for their country regardless of the rights or wrongs involved they have little to do with the ordinary soldier!

David, there have been MANY who SCREAMED -- incessantly -- for the imipeachment (and later criminal indictments) of these people.

Pelosi took impeachment "off the table" when they were in office, thereby snuffing further action; then, Obama "forgave" them from criminal prosecution when they were citizens by insisting that we all not dwell on the past, but look forward.

Secret dealings are the norm on all issues that could impact US and the world in a negative way. American's must remember that "we" are the government that we're upset with.. I am as guilty as anyone out there. It took a freight train to hit me for me to see that all was not well with-in the workings of my Nation.

I think that post was Simply Pointing out the Obvious;

ie.. getting pregnant if you or your partner was exposed in these areas of Iraq; should Be a High enough Risk To Convince most people to Stop having Deformed, Severly Dissabled, Premature or misscarried, Babies;

Not Just Iraqi's;
But anyone that Spent time in the Exposed Areas;
or was involved in Transport or storage of DU;

Should Avoid Such a High risk of Muatation/Deformity;
Just out of Respect for the Sanity of thier Spouse/Partner;

(having had a child with a brain tumour; I know Guilt and Worry about her past affected my Ex more than me; But any Parent with a Soul; Would be Tortured; By Such things happening to thier child)...

But, to suggest that any people who live in a country WE invaded -- and poisoned with DU -- should not consider having children??? (An entire nation should give up hope for future generations . . . and THAT seems like a fair solution?)

Please remember that the U.S. soldiers who served there have ALSO been exposed to that danger, and are bringing that home with them?

Has it not occurred to those promoting birth control that PERHAPS we should outlaw using such nefarious weapons?

American Use Of DU
is "A crime against humanity which may, in the eyes of historians, rank with the worst atrocities of all time."
US Iraq Military Vets "are on DU death row, waiting to die."
By James Denver

A Culture of Denial

In 1996 and 1997 UN Human Rights Tribunals condemned DU weapons for illegally breaking the Geneva Convention and classed them as 'weapons of mass destruction' 'incompatible with international humanitarian and human rights law'. Since then, following leukemia in European peacekeeping troops in the Balkans and Afghanistan (where DU was also used), the EU has twice called for DU weapons to be banned.

Yet, far from banning DU, America and Britain stepped up their denials of the harm from this radioactive dust as more and more troops from the first Gulf war and from action and peacekeeping in the Balkans and Afghanistan have become seriously ill. This is no coincidence.

In 1997, while citing experiments, by others, in which 84 percent of dogs exposed to inhaled uranium died of cancer of the lungs, Dr. Asaf Durakovic, then Professor of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Georgetown University in Washington was quoted as saying, 'The [US government's] Veterans Administration asked me to lie about the risks of incorporating depleted uranium in the human body.' He concluded, 'uranium does cause cancer, uranium does cause mutation, and uranium does kill. If we continue with the irresponsible contamination of the biosphere, and denial of the fact that human life is endangered by the deadly isotope uranium, then we are doing disservice to ourselves, disservice to the truth, disservice to God and to all generations who follow.' Not what the authorities wanted to hear and his research was suddenly blocked.

On hearing that DU had been used in the Gulf in 1991, the UK Atomic Energy Authority sent the Ministry of Defense a special report on the potential damage to health and the environment. It said that it could cause half a million additional cancer deaths in Iraq over 10 years. In that war the authorities only admitted to using 320 tons of DU-although the Dutch charity LAKA estimates the true figure is closer to 800 tons. Many times that may have been spread across Iraq by this year's war. The devastating damage all this DU will do to the health and fertility of the people of Iraq now, and for generations to come, is beyond imagining.

The radioactivity persists for over 4,500,000,000 years killing millions of every age for centuries to come. This is a crime against humanity which may rank with the worst atrocities of all time.

What the governments of America and Britain have done to the people of Iraq they have also done to their own soldiers, in both wars. And they have done it knowingly. For the battlefields have been thick with DU and soldiers have had to enter areas heavily contaminated by bombing. Moreover, their bodies have not only been assaulted by DU but also by a vaccination regime which violated normal protocols, experimental vaccines, nerve agent pills, and organophosphate pesticides in their tents. Yet, though the hazards of DU were known, British and American troops were not warned of its dangers. Nor were they given thorough medical checks on their return-even though identifying it quickly might have made it possible to remove some of it from their body. Then, when a growing number became seriously ill, and should have been sent to top experts in radiation damage and neurotoxins, many were sent to a psychiatrist.

Over 200,000 US troops who returned from the 1991 war are now invalided out with ailments officially attributed to service in Iraq-that's 1 in 3. In contrast, the British government's failure to fully assess the health of returning troops, or to monitor their health, means no one even knows how many have died or become gravely ill since their return. However, Gulf veterans' associations say that, of 40,000 or so fighting fit men and women who saw active service, at least 572 have died prematurely since coming home and 5000 may be ill. An alarming number are thought to have taken their own lives, unable to bear the torment of the innumerable ailments which have combined to take away their career, their sexuality, their ability to have normal children, and even their ability to breathe or walk normally. As one veteran puts it, they are 'on DU death row, waiting to die'.

Whatever other factors there may be, some of their illnesses are strikingly similar to those of Iraqis exposed to DU dust. For example, soldiers have also fathered children without eyes. And, in a group of eight servicemen whose babies lack eyes seven are known to have been directly exposed to DU dust.

They too have fathered children with stunted arms, and rare abnormalities classically associated with radiation damage. They too seem prone to cancer and leukemia. Tellingly, so are EU soldiers who served as peacekeepers in the Balkans, where DU was also used. Indeed their leukemia rate has been so high that several EU governments have protested at the use of DU.

The Vital Evidence

Despite all that evidence of the harm done by DU, governments on both sides of the Atlantic have repeatedly claimed that as it emits only 'low level' radiation DU is harmless. Award-winning scientist, Dr. Rosalie Bertell who has led UN medical commissions, has studied 'low-level' radiation for 30 years. She has found that uranium oxide particles have more than enough power to harm cells, and describes their pulses of radiation as hitting surrounding cells 'like flashes of lightning' again and again in a single second.2 Like many scientists worldwide who have studied this type of radiation, she has found that such 'lightning strikes' can damage DNA and cause cell mutations which lead to cancer.

Moreover, these particles can be taken up by body fluids and travel through the body, damaging more than one organ. To compound all that, Dr. Bertell has found that this particular type of radiation can cause the body's communication systems to break down, leading to malfunctions in many vital organs of the body and to many medical problems. A striking fact, since many veterans of the first Gulf war suffer from innumerable, seemingly unrelated, ailments.

And this time the use of DU wasn't limited to anti-tank weapons -as it had largely been in the previous Gulf war- but was extended to the guided missiles, large bunker busters and big 2000-pound bombs used in Iraq's cities. This means that Iraq's cities have been blanketed in lethal particles -any one of which can cause cancer or deform a child. In addition, the use of DU in huge bombs which throw the deadly particles higher and wider in huge plumes of smoke means that billions of deadly particles have been carried high into the air- again and again and again as the bombs rained down- ready to be swept worldwide by the winds.

The Royal Society has suggested the solution is massive decontamination in Iraq. That could only scratch the surface. For decontamination is hugely expensive and, though it may reduce the risks in some of the worst areas, it cannot fully remove them. For DU is too widespread on land and water. How do you clean up every nook and cranny of a city the size of Baghdad? How can they decontaminate a whole country in which microscopic particles, which cannot be detected with a normal geiger counter, are spread from border to border? And how can they clean up all the countries downwind of Iraq-and, indeed, the world?

So there are only two things we can do to mitigate this crime against humanity. The first is to provide the best possible medical care for the people of Iraq, for our returning troops and for those who served in the last Gulf war and, through that, minimize their suffering. The second is to relegate war, and the production and sale of weapons, to the scrap heap of history-along with slavery and genocide. Then, and only then, will this crime against humanity be expunged, and the tragic deaths from this war truly bring freedom to the people of Iraq, and of the world.

The above are excerpts from Denver's very long article, available here: http://www.rense.com/general64/du.htm

James Denver's article was also published on the Truthout site, in April 2005, which means that the horrific deformaties and birth defects that we are just discovering now have in fact been reported on since at least 2005 !!

I wrote about DU in a Care2 article in March 2008:

Over 70,000 Deaths, and Over 1 Million Disabilities Among American Soldiers Attributed to Iraq Wars Says U.S. Government Data

(And we were not supposed to know about it then . . . and it's received practically no coverage since.)

I have googled 'campaign against depleted uranium' to see what action can be taken in organized groups.
Here are the results:

There is an 'International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons' - http://wbx.me/l/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bandepleteduranium.org%2Fen

On their site, I discovered that 6/11, (11/6 for USA) yesterday, was 'the' day of action:
November 6th is the International Day of Action Against Depleted Uranium Weapons.
It also happens to be the United Nations' Day for Prevention of the Exploitation of the Environment during Wars and Armed Conflicts. Events take place worldwide so check here for what's near you or email us with your own plans. In 2008 several groups extended the day into a month. Many actions coincided with the passage of a DU resolution at the United Nations. What will you organise in 2009?

They have a whole 'take action' section; each item is an active link on the site:

At home --You’d be surprised what you can achieve just by sitting at home...(click & they'll tell you)

At the bank -- ICBUW members are actively campaigning to stop banks investing in companies who produce DU weapons, cluster munitions and land mines.

Petition --Join more than 200,000 people worldwide by signing our petition. You can do it online or download a petition sheet from our activist's tools section.

Donate --Our work is dependent on independent donations, you can donate with Paypal by credit or debit card, even if you are not a member.

Toolkit --Tools and information for campaigners.

ICBUW's membership includes 122 groups in 30 countries worldwide.

Thanks for all your kind words my sweet sister. And props to you sensible guys too. What scares me is that any human could do this to another human. There is a beautiful tradtion when facing horror: you sing out, howl out, draw out, dance out your grief. You do this until all your rage and anger pass. Untill your sorrow passes. Then you get up and tend the wounded.

You help the needy, you stop the wars. No healthy animals do what we do. Just in the US alone we've had two shooting rampages within 24 hours. How cruel and imhuman can we be when our brothers and sisters are this broken, this hurt?

We are all a breath away from life, from death. We must remember this and have compassion and love for oneanother. Clearly thousands of years of war have PROVED it solves nothing.

Hugs to you all. Peace and love to all the life that suffers in the insanity of war.

I once posted an article on DU, about the leading DU authority, Leuren Moret, whose study of DU contamination in Hawaii resulted in her accusing the army of using it in training sessions (!)

If you do a search on C2NN for DU, you'll discover all the many posts that are on the network, posted months and even years ago! They do not necessarily deal with birth defects and malformations in Iraq, though.

Well said Nightcat Mau. It is insane and makes one wonder if any legislator in America, less a few, are playing with a full deck. Any semblance of Common sense or, for that matter decency, is so far removed from the Washington scene that I am convinced they will, in due time, self destruct! My fear is they will take the country with them!

Ther's never any good outcomings when it concerns war,it's the common people who are paying the price all along.
It's so sad.
Noted thank you Uhoud.

These are OUR babies. We are all of the same species living on the same planet. These precious souls never did any wrong. These are God's children, he breathed the same life into every one of us. Shame shame on those who protect their "own" when we are all one. Heart breaking madness Ahoud, I cry with you. I've been trying to share this messege for many years from over here, and I just can't understand why so much indifference. I so love to see all the support and so many eyes wide open here in care2. I don't know what encouraging words can be said. The residue of Depleted Uranium will outlast 100's of generations. We must stop all war and pool our rescources to find a antidote (including clean up) for this cruelest of all insanities man has conjured up to this date.

Such devastation from mankind on the human race. Have said that "little ones", including babies, are the ones most affected by the darkness in the heart of humans.... Pray that more compassion is brought to light. Sad that war is the ONLY way to get through to some 'people', using the term very loosely. [* Make no mistake, I support our TROOPS 100% for fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves.]
