What is going on in our nation? What do parents teach their children at home?

I'm so sorry to hear about this.

It has to be asked; how on Earth did a child of that age have access to a gun?

This is a very sad situation. For those who pray please keep this little girl, her family and the little boy who brought the gun to school in your prayers. We as a society need to demand that parents are held responsible for actions such as this. The boy is only 9 years old. What kind of home life did he have? As Roger asked above, how did a child this age get a gun?

How on earth did a child that age get his hands on a gun? In the State of Michigan, 10 year olds are allowed to hunt with firearms. I find that to be totally and completely idiotic. Children should not be allowed to use lethal weapons for any reason. I don't care if the weapon is a gun, a knife or a crossbow--children should not have access to them.

Sadly, guns are what a lot of people see as a solution to problems and this carries over to innocent people, including the children.

This is just horrible. Both children will never be the same after this, and all of the children in that school have lost their sense of security. That cannot be replaced. We must be more careful around our children and make sure that they cannot get their hands on guns.

I have been following this story closely as I live in Seattle and of course am interested in any occurrence like this where ever it might be. To date, I have not learned why this boy was carrying a gun in his pack pack and where he got it. Bless these two children.

This is what you get when guns are so easily available. Repeal the right to bear arms, and make them illegal altogether.

This is horrible. You hear of school shootings and it usually involves middle school/junior high or high school.
I think this is the first time I have heard of one at a elementary school. God help these kids!

I don't blame the children who commit these crimes. I blame the parents for not teaching their children how dangerous these weapons can be when misused, and for having them in places that are easily accessible to these naive children. And, if one were to do thorough research on school shootings like this, I could just about bet my bottom dollar that the overwhelming majority of these children who commit these crimes are on some kind of psychotropic drugs for ADHA, depression, bi-polar disorder, etc. It has also been determined that a lot of these neurological problems in children today are due to their environment and the foods that they eat.

I do sincerely hope that the little girl will be OK. And I also hope that the little boy who did the shooting receives the necessary counseling for him to grasp fully what it was that he did so it doesn't happen again. And his parents need to be counseled, as well, and maybe not be allowed to have guns in the home any more until their son, and all other minor children of theirs (if there are other siblings), have turned legal age or moved out.

Thanks for sharing Agnes. This is such a sad story.
WTF is wrong with people? Do parents not care about their kids.
If you must have a gun - LOCK IT UP UNLOADED. I myself do not believe in guns. GUNS KILL!!!!!

Incredible. What is going on here? Why did a young child have access to a gun, and why was it not detected as he walked into school? I guess schools there do not have the same precautions we have here in MO. Very sad, and my prayers are with both families.

"'SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME" ! This surely a MONSTROUSLY OUTRAGEOUS CRIMINAL ACT, its magnitude made worse by the fact that it occurred in what once used to be "SACROSANCT" the environment in which helpless CHILDREN, are being assisted and guided into become RESPONSIBLE ADULTS of tomorrow's SOCIETY ! THERE IS A STERN WARNING IN THIS FOR AMERICAN SOCIETY, YOUR FUTURE IS LOOKING BLEAK IF YOU CAN HAVE SUCH HORRENDOUS DEEDS HAPPEN in your CLASSROOMS and PLAYING FIELDS !! ETHICALLY and MORALLY , despite protestations and PRETENCES about CHRISTIAN REVIVAL, YOUR ARE CERTAINLY ON A DOWNWARD SLIDE INTO THE ABYSS and PERDITION !!! CHILDREN, in ANY SOCIETY, MUST NEVER HAVE SUCH LIFE-LONG SCARRING EVENTS SHATTERS THEIR 'naive, all righteous piety assuming INNOCENCE !! SPARE NO EXPENSE TO ENSURE THIS NEVER AGAIN HAPPENS ANYWHERE IN YOUR SCHOOLS !!!! THIS IS WHAT self-righteous TV-EVANGELISTS SHOULD BE RANTING ABOUT AND TAKING ACTIVE MEASURES TO PREVENT , instead of RAISING TV AUDIENCES TO 'BULGE THEIR WALLETS' and CORPORATE PORTFOLIOS !! WAKE UP AMERICA !!!

A very sad situation, and exactly why Nelson Mandela is so pro-education; that is the only way to teach future generations, by ensuring proper education - but that does NOT mean parents should not be educating their children from the day they are born!! Sadly to me this reflects on the boy's parents?

Horrifying. When will the USA wake up and abolish the out-of-date "right to bear arms"?

All last 14 school shootings had ONE thing in common [something else than guns].
