Babies born just a few weeks early have a slightly higher risk of health problems in infancy, research suggests. Doctors said their work challenged widely held views that babies born after 37 weeks had similar long-term outcomes to those born at full term

It's not surprising that there would be increased risks. The babies born earlier don't have quite as much time to develop their systems while still in the fairly safe womb environment. Even babies born on time are still getting all of their systems up and running and don't have the same kinds of fully functional digestive or immune systems that a child or adult will have. Fortunately, it seems the increased risk is short-term (a few years) and not generally for severe problems.

All of this makes it more and more amazing when we see earlier babies surviving these days. Of course, it's not the optimum way for a child to be born, we all wish they could go full term. Interesting article, thank you

I was ten weeks premature and now suffer from several heath problems so everything should be done to carry a baby full term
