HUMANS and gorillas last shared a common ancestor 10 million years ago, according to an analysis of the first full sequence of the gorilla genome. The gorilla is the last of the living great apes - humans,

Bonobos are 99% genetically similar to humans, if I recall correctly.

Noted. Thank you Agnes. I like the articles you select. This one is particularly interesting. I really wish mankind could treat gorillas with more respect and compassion.

Seems to me that without them, we would not be. .We call ourselves humans to try and distinguish ourselves .. But we too are animals, with the good fortune? of a different voice box and perhaps greater brain power. Great apes are our aged relatives, our own very very great grandparents.. If this link was more widely known - maybe people would have more respect for them and their homellands.

I am not all so sure we (humans) Evolved from the Great Apes, seems to me any species hell-bent on destroying itself and who practices such sic behavior as pedophile and other such perversions, war and killing animals for "fun" (wild or domestic) is NOT evolved, but DE-evolved.

Very interesting article! We share so many genes with the great apes. I'm sure if Charles Darwin was alive, that he would be thrilled to see how the study of genetics and being able to map a species entire genome substantiates evolution.

That certainly explains our territorial battles, our animal instincts, and our refusal to actually settle down and be more civil towards those outside our conclaves.

Neat. I'm sure we will continue to learn more and more about ourselves and the other animals we share the planet with.

What ever DNA is responsible for the differences between us and the gorillas was a huge mistake of nature. Had humans not "evolved" this planet would be in pristine shape and all the other species that live on this planet would be thriving.

If they say that they are related to humans then why are they using them in experiments, why are they killing them for fun, that means they are killing humans, right??

And in other news, Gorilla's have filled a lawsuit demanding an apology from human scientists for announcing the fact they are distantly related to humans. Their attorney states they in no way want to be mentioned in the same sentence as humans (otherwise known as environmental murderers). Chimpanzees are considering joining in on the lawsuit stating as far as they can see it is not humans that evolved-it was the great apes.

Thanks Agnes for this article. And Terry we don't have to worry about the fundies getting mad because they won't read the article anyway. In their world articles like this are banned along with National Georgraphic and a host of other educational material. Love your post Debra.....if only this could happen.
