If there's anything more impressive than a bear's size, it's its intelligence. Bears can learn to ride bicycles, use tools, and as new research shows, "count."

No surprise! It seems that science until fairly recently discounted intelligence and emotion in "lower," non-human animals. Thanks for posting this, Agnes.

Very interesting post. Thanks.

I don't think we've even begun to scratch the surface of other animal's intelligence and I think that what we may learn will surprise many of us.

Bears are my favorite animal.....since I was about 5.....if you ever get to Minnesota take a trip to Ely (way up north by Canadian border) to visit North American Bear Center --- especially in spring/summer/fall...

Bears are highly intelligent, social creatures who respect each others' territory and play fair. Female grizzlies play tag with their young and have been known to accept cubs not born to them as their own. Animals are smarter, BETTER people than human beings. Am I shocked by this? NO! It's time to arm bears! The world would be a better, more peaceful place.

II'm not sure about giving them guns, Michelle. There might be an exceptional, trigger-happy son-of-a-bear out there who would go on a rampage. ;)

oh I wish I wish that an animal being intelligent didn't lead to their downfall and their use in "entertainment" and research. Animals are smart and have emotions, just like us.

Look at Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo. They were smart enough to become famous cartoon characters. (Though Yogi confessed he was 'smarter than the average bear').

Do we really need a scientist to tell us about their intelligence? I think not. Though they have an extremely good sense of smell to their advantage, they always seem to find human food if in the vacinity even if disguised. It usually doesn't take them long to figure out how to access it once detected. I wish they would stop slaughtering these amazing creatures for human pleasure.

Thanks Agnes.Michelle S, I agree it would be a safer world if bears and animals had guns and not humans as animals have a higher intellect

All animals are smart. look at how they survive without air conditioning, microwaves, and all the ridiculous accoutrements that we need. they don't need clothes because they live in climates that are right for their bodies. They don;t feel the need to build humongous houses cars.. We are the ones who "need' all these things. they survive and do it well (as long as they stay away from people). What scientists should look at is why we are so greedy and need so many things instead of living a natural life. I think they would call it intelligence but I might call it something else. We are the freaks of nature who have no real purpose here.

Animals have brains but no understanding of knowledge, Humans have knowledge but no brains, if they (Humans) did have brains they would not do all the horrible things that they do!!!

Now if they could just teach those tricks to Republican's what a boon to society that would be. They'd all go off riding their little bicycles looking for grubs. One can hope.

Sounds good, but why do we have to capture these animals to test them.

Read & noted, thanks Agnes. It seems that only we arrogant humans "think" we're the only smart creatures. Animals are far smarter than any human was, is, or ever will be! If we actually listened to the animals, we might learn something. Animals have survived things happening on this planet for billions of years. Even when some supposedly "died out" during different ages, they always came back, stronger & smarter each time. What makes us think just because we don't speak the same language, we're superior or smarter? Animals are sentient, thinking, feeling beings. They're smart enough to know not to test on eachother. They co-exist, they only kill for protection, survival, or to provide food, not because someone looks different, or believes differently, they are non-judgemental, they care about eachother & especially their own families, unconditionally. Even those that lay eggs, though the offspring are usually on their own, any parents in the vicinity will protect them from impending danger. Humans kill randomly, humans are greedy, humans always take more than they need, humans are judgemental & prejudiced, humans pollute & destroy their own environment.

This is so American..."give bears a gun and the world would be safer(!)". This is so stupid and it shows how dumb some humans are. I say: the world would be better WITHOUT guns. Stick your guns up your @ss and stop trying to rule the world !!

Great, now the bears will know exactly how many of their kind are mistreated and killed by people.
