Jan. 28, 2013: Talk about a close shave. On Feb. 15th an asteroid about half the size of a football field will fly past Earth only 17,200 miles above our planet's surface. There's no danger of a collision, but the space rock, designated 2012 DA14, has...

Even Earth is just a massive lump of matter floating in space, among all the other various rocks, bits and pieces floating around, yet we hardly stop and think how strange that is. It's quite frightening when you actually sit down and think deeply about it all. Much spookier than ghosts and ghouls.
Will we be able to see 2012DA14 through binoculars or only with a telescope? I expect the media will let us know more when we get to Feb 15.

Scary, real scary- flying above earth @ 17,200 miles is too close for comfort. Thanks for the info.

. . . I wonder if I'm covered for asteroids and meteors? Maybe I should call my insurance agent, just in case . . .

Love space stuff, you know with all the earth quakes that have caused shifts in our earth I often worry one of these days the math is going to be off, but so far it seems all is 'sort of well'.
