Here we have yet another phony food safety bill, which does NOTHING but grant the FDA massive new police powers without actual policy oversight. And it would do NOTHING to solve the actual problem.

(NaturalNews) The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund has announced the immediate need to oppose a new and integrated form of the many food safety bills that have been announced in recent months as potential candidate food safety bills. HR 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, is an aggregated version of bills such as HR 875 and HR 759 and it was introduced in its discussion draft form on June 8 by Rep. John Dingell (D-MI). It was immediately voted out of the Health Subcommittee on June 10 in an amended form and is headed quickly to the Energy and Commerce Committee on June 17 for mark-up. This is the first and only food safety bill that has received a hearing and made its way out of committee, indicating that this is indeed the bill that has been chosen and the one that needs to be vehemently opposed, and quickly.

Urgent opposition is necessary in order to stop this bill because not only does it fail to effectively reform the industrial food system, it will detrimentally impact small farms and food production facilities as well as local artisans who will be unfairly and disproportionally burdened with a one-size-fits-all regulatory system. Additionally, the bill will bolster the power of the already out-of-control Food and Drug Administration (FDA) while diminishing the existing judicial restraints on the agency's actions through its amending of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA).

Because the bill's provisions concerning food safety and FDA's scope of power concerning enforcement are so vaguely worded in this bill, it creates potential for the unchecked abuse of power by FDA and the incongruous application and enforcement of regulations. While failing to clearly identify and address the primary causes of food safety failures, including industrial farming practices and food supply consolidation, HR 2749 follows in the footsteps of its predecessors by unfairly targeting clean, small-scale, local farming and food operations.

The Gestapo Food Act, H.R. 2749, Must Be Stopped

Here we have yet another phony food safety bill, which does NOTHING
but grant the FDA massive new police powers without actual policy
oversight. And it would do NOTHING to solve the actual problem, the
stinking cesspools which call themselves "modern" factory farms, the
SOLE source of whatever filth there is in our food supply. We don't
need burdensome new tracing regimes to drive small farmers out of
business, we already know exactly where the problem is.

H.R. 2749 would give some FDA administrator (read self-serving
corporate lobbyist) the power to dictate what farming practices must
and must not be used nationwide (read enforced GMOs, growth hormones,
and weird chemicals in our food). How can Congress make sane policy
without identifying the specific problem and its source before
empowering 10 year criminal sentences and $100,000 fines? It can't.
But only if we stop them from doing it, by speaking out now.

Stop HR 2749 Action Page: http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum996.php

This hideously ill-conceived bill (unless you are a chemical food
conglomerate) is so terminally vague about what its PURPOSE is, it
can only do massive harm and no good whatsoever. Aren't bills in
Congress supposed to start with some kind of preamble, something
like, "This is the problem we have identified, and this is what has
to be done to fix it and WHY." No such forethought in HR 2749, just
unlimited and unaccountable new police state powers, while President
Obama continues to appoint the WORST possible nominees for just about
every administrative position.

It's time to wake up folks. It's just one corporate power grab hand
over fist out there. Not ONE major bill has Congress passed yet since
the last election that did ANYTHING to confront the actual real
problem. Credit card so-called reform was some kind of sick joke on
the American people, rejecting the only provision that actually
mattered, constraining usurous interest rates. Has anybody seen any
BIG savings on their credit card bills yet? Did we have to ask?

And they TRYING to do the same thing with health care reform, to do
nothing to disturb the existing corporate medical industry gravy
train. It is ONLY because of the alerts we have done on this already
that single payer is actually getting a hearing. What kind of lunacy
is it when the plan supported by a majority of the American people is
not even allowed in the room? It's the lunacy that happens when more
of us do not speak out more often. And we'll have another alert on
that later in the week.

Remember when Gingrich was Speaker and said the FDA had to much power. To leave the corporations alone and let them police themselves. Even made the remark that the corporations were handled by good people and they wouldn't do anything to hurt the American people. Good Gosh, what a bunch of crap.

A good post David, the FDA should be properly staffed and regulated to protect the people, not the multi-millionaire corporations.

Oppose HR 2749, a bill that fails to address the real issues of food safety yet gives FDA increased power with less accountability. Its one-size-fits-all regulatory scheme will impact small farms and artisanal producers for the worse.

Thanks David. I signed with this comment:

Why must I grow my own food so I am not left with monster foods that the FDA approves? This is outrageous and expresses the most criminal acts of capitalism and fascism working hand in hand. Stop killing Americans and the world with monster foods!

111th U.S. Congress - House Bill HR 2749 [Click here for FAQs]

A new food safety bill is on the fast track in Congress--HR 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009. The bill needs to be stopped!

HR 2749 gives FDA tremendous power while significantly diminishing existing judicial restraints on actions taken by the agency. The bill would impose a one-size-fits-all regulatory scheme on small farms and local artisanal producers; and it would disproportionately impact their operations for the worse.

This is and was planned from the scare last summer that Tomato's were contaminated, then 6 weeks later after farmers had lost millions, the FDA announced it was Mexican Peppers, not tomato's.
Now the contaminated Peanut Butter, Pistachio's, one thing after another, and how did these get contamintated? A setup by our federal government to take over 100% control of all farming in America, to protect us?
If you do not send Obama back to Kenya, our nation will cease to have any Constitution and Bill of Rights that are being eliminated bit by bit, every day. Wake up Americans, this is all a scam to destroy us. NO more Freedoms, do not attempt to grow your own foods, that will be a felony.
Only Don Cordell can save this nation, I'm begging you to research what is going on, stop Obama. Restore GM, Chrysler, and Ford, so they will be here to manufacture our Military Needs to protect our nation.

Don, it is the fault of former president Bush and Cheney and their friends whom they put into the positions of power over the unsanitary conditions that resulted in the contaminated food supplies of which you talk. I am sick of all of you narrow minded people who blame all of the faults and failures from the previous administration onto the one who has only had control of this mess left by the Republicans Party of NO for 5 months. It will take more time to clean up this mess of 8 years of mistakes than 5 months. Enough already.
